To me there are good translations on both ends. Mortal kombat had a good movie The resident evil francise has good movies (I've seen all of the except degeneration and after life) The Pokemon seris has really good movies (while the story were more based on the anime the anime is still rooted in the games) Good games based on movies include:Super star wars,Grand theft Auto (joking that movie wasn't the inspiration for the games),and god father
My favorite zelda game is Twilight Princess and Jirachi is my favorite pokemon <3 skype:SSBBKING

Agreed. The only video game movies I can say I liked was mortal kombat and the wizard ... and even then, both of those are shunned by critics.

I love video game movie adaptations there's plenty out there that are decent Mario Bros. is not the only one and yes it did suck but it was still a fun movie.

But I love Mortal Kombat Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Resident Evil Afterlife, Resident Evil Degeneration, Dead Space Downfall, Final Fantasy Advent Children.

games turned into movies now those are all pretty much crap and there just licensed to sell the movie and there budget games to begin with. The best one I can think of are all on the Snes like Toy Story, Lion King, Batman Returns Etc.

I've found more fun out of the movie to game adaptions.

-Toy Story 2
-Toy Story 3
-Godfather Black Hand Edition
-Scarface
-Spider-Man
-Spider-Man 2

Are some examples of good movie to game games.
Finally got a PS3 sooo add me if you want. :)

There have been a lot more bad games based on movies, simply because there have been more games made ABOUT movies than vice versa.

However, I think if you look at the ratio of movie/games to game/movies, you will find that proportionately speaking, there are FAR more absolutely TERRIBLE movies based on games, than there are games based on movies. Or let me put it another way. There are FAR more at least DECENT, if not in some rare cases excellent games based on movies, whereas.......honestly, how many even DECENT movies are there, based on games? I'm willing to bet the majority of you could name them on one hand.

I'll give it a try. Just off the top of my head, without going to look it up on Wikipedia or anything, I can think of:

Mortal Kombat
Street Fighter
And.........................??

I honestly think Super Mario Bros. is a decent movie. It doesn't have a damn thing to do with the actual games, really. But as a MOVIE goes, it's funny, and entertaining. I always liked it. Street Fighter is less so, but it's still a good bargain bin pickup, and it's also entertaining every once in awhile. For all the things they screwed up in it, there are a lot of nice little touches, too.

But for my money, Mortal Kombat (the first one), is the ONLY truly great video game based movie I've ever personally seen. It was very true to the game(s), it had a bad ass soundtrack, a very high budget and high quality (for the time), excellent casting, and even though it was based on a silly and ultra-violent fighting game, they actually managed to treat the source material with respect, and really play up the somewhat unspoken mythology behind the series' story. Robin Shou was perfect as Liu Kang, for sure. The fight scenes were even excellent, and it actually had decent acting by everyone involve (which is rare for both video game based movies, and martial arts/action films in general).

And believe me, that's high praise considering the fact that I think everything else Paul W. S. Anderson has made.....is pretty much garbage. Guess he had one excellent film in him, though. It happens. Sorry, I never cared for the RE movies....big budget, sure, but nothing (really) to do with the actual game story, and I always held a grudge against it for Capcom giving George Romero, the guy whose movies they BASED the RE (Biohazard) series on, the boot, both his original script, and him as director. God forbid, they felt he was going to make it too *gasp* ZOMBIE BASED. Go figure.

But seriously, there have been many at least decent movie based games. Game based movies have not been so lucky. Maybe they should just stop.

@ Devil_Rising

Pretty much summed it up.

Still, I don't think they should completely stop game/movie or movie/game adaptations. Perhaps Hollywood should, but Japanese developers and animation studios are quite capable of overseeing an often spectacular transition. Just look at Professor Layton, Pokémon and Final Fantasy, among other. In addition to faithful cinematic adaptations, Japanese IPs have also seen successful entries in other mediums (i.e. manga and anime). Even movies and t.v. series get decent/good (or at least fun) games (Sky Crawlers, Gundam, Naruto, Bleach and many other anime and manga).

I'd love to see them make a faithful traditionally (not CGI) animated adaptations of FFIV and FFVI. Hell, even FFI would be cool. Or Chrono Trigger. Or Illusion of Gaia. Or Breath of Fire. I still say those SNES era rpgs were the best ever made. And they would make for some great animation, if done right. I'm not talking that "FFV" based anime they made. It was very "meh", and wasn't actually based on the game's story. If it had been, that would have been awesome.

In fact, I think they could make a decent SMB movie animated. I'd prefer the SMB: Super Show style of voices over the "Itsa Me, MARIO", but hey. I'm not sure why anyone was surprised they didn't make a literal SMB translation in live action anyway. It would have been even more ridiculous.

Although, I also still maintain that I don't want to see live action takes on Zelda or Metroid or anything like that. Why? Because they'd mess it up, and it would likely be terrible. Animated? Sure. Bring it on. But not live action. They almost always destroy things when they make them live action.

Oh man, this quote gave me so many ideas... Imagine Square Enix let Studio Ghibli direct a movie based on one of their games! Isao Takahata (Grave of the Fireflies, My Neighbours the Yamadas) could make a beautiful movie based on Seiken Densetsu and Hayao Miyazaki could create something spectacular vased on Chrono Trigger and/or Chrono Cross. Mamoru Hosoda (ex-Studio Ghibli director) could also create something wonderful with those RPGs. I could see him making an amazing film based on Earthbound, Moon or some other unique RPG by developers like Yoshiro Kimura and Kenichi Nishi (you know, developers who are sadly forgotten by most...). A movie based on a game in the Shin Megami Tensei series (especially the Persons titles thanks to their surreal concepts and stylized character and demon designs) could also be amazing. I could totally see Satoshi Kon (R.I.P) working on Persona, but alas...

I find it funny that the films made by just some people at home with their own stuff have turned out way better than ANYTHING Hollywood has churned out. For example:

http://beyondblackmesa.com/ (Half-Life 2)
http://www.vtfilms.com/nukabreak/ (Fallout: New Vegas)
semi-NWS no nudity or anything, some violence and maybe cursing.

These two are done so well, and yet are user made projects. I would love to see more of these out there.

Don't forget that "Street Fighter: Legacy" video. That s*** was fantastic, and looked professionally done. I'd love to see a SF movie like THAT.

I don't remember any game to film adaptation doing as much for the film industry as Goldeneye on the N64 did for the game industry.

Games based on movies are never, EVER good. Every game based on a movie I've ever played was terrible, so I've learned to stay away from those.

The Super Star Wars series on SNES, as well as the SNES and Arcade versions of Hook, would like to have a word with you. Also, the Terminator 2 arcade game wasn't half bad for a run-of-the-mill arcade shooter. There were other games as such that were good to decent, but I don't care to sit and think of more right this moment.

Perhaps the amendment to your statement should read "New games based on modern movies are never, EVER good." That would be quite accurate, I think.

And even then, I HEAR (never played) that the Spider-Man 2 movie based game was pretty good.

Okay, I shouldn't have used the words "never EVER". I should have left some wiggle room and said "hardly ever". That would have been more accurate. Of course there are exceptions to every rule, but games based off of movies are generally terrible.

I'm one of the few who actually really enjoyed Super Mario Bros. It has some good laughs, fun action scenes, and was delightfully campy. I honestly don't like how people just take high-profile reviewer's words for media instead of experiencing it themselves. n fact, I own a DVD copy. Also, I recently pondered: has there ever been/will there ever be a movie-based game that is considered better than its film counterpart?
