Mario Vs. Zelda Vs. Metroid

Postby Clowns8me » 20 Jul 2009 20:55

I feel like I haven't put out one of these threads in a while.

Anyone who has read any of my posts probably knows that I love Metroid. So that's my obvious winner. I like Zelda very much too, and the Mario games...
...I have yet to thoroughly enjoy a Mario game.

Metroid, because the series doesn't involve rescuing the same princess that seems to be an IDIOT and can't keep herself from getting stolen/kidnapped by seemingly the same villain in almost every game.

If we're pickin' favorites, then I'd go with Zelda. If we're pickin' the BEST...well, Zelda would be neck-and-neck with Mario. Mario has had many great classic games (Super Mario World, Super Mario Kart, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Galaxy[soon to be a classic]), but Ocarina of Time has had a greater influence on most RPG games than any other, so i think Zelda wins here. Not to mention Majora's Mask was the first 'sandbox' game.

Not that Metroid hasn't had some greats either. I can think of at least four excellent/groundbreaking Metroid games. Super Metroid is said to be king of all side-scrollers. Metroid Prime proved the franchise could transfer to 3-D just as well as 64 and OoT. Hunters proved hardcore multiplayer online FPSs like Halo were possible for a handheld system. And Corruption had those sexy new FPS controls with the Wiimote that's getting us all geeked up for the Trilogy. :)

My favorites? Well Wind Waker is my fav game ever, seeing as it was my first Zelda experience.
I'm almost done with Prime 1, but i already like it better than Corruption.
Super Mario Galaxy is still in my Top 5 (do i even have a list?). Best game for the Wii. 8)

I choose the fourth option because I looked at this thread right after it was made and said, ugh, that dumb Clowns8me, no poll AGAIN. AND, I have a terrible time deciding between the three, how can you choose between your three favorite children?

That's a tough one, but I picked Zelda over Mario. Metroid's my least favorite of the three.

How about Samus, who can't manage to hang onto her equipment and special abilities for more than 20 minutes into each Metroid game?

I tend to savour Zelda titles more than the other titles, but Metroid takes the cake as far as lore goes. :D

Mario games are nice I guess, but there's a slight oversaturation when it comes to those.

If you haven't "thoroughly enjoyed" a Mario game before, I suggest you go back and replay Mario 64, Super Mario World and SMB3 as soon as possible. If you still haven't enjoyed a Mario game after playing through those three titles, you've got a problem with yourself (or maybe you just don't like platformers very much). :?

ha. replay. I have played the 64 version on the DS (which was... mildly fun). But I do feel like I should really play SMB3. I'll try to give a look at SMW as well. But yeah, platformers are not my favorite unless they're mixed in with other genres. (AKA metroid games).

Aw man, the DS version of Mario 64 sucks. You should really play the original. SMB3 is great, but my all-time favorite Mario game is Super Mario World. Seriously, that game is awesome. But you have to like platformers, I guess.

Maybe you'd like Mario 64 a little better because it has a pretty good amount of exploration mixed in with the platforming. As does Mario Sunshine. This is something I found lacking in Mario Galaxy.

I know this goes against quality over quantity, but I vote Mario simply because he's in a lot of good games. I don't have to like all of the main series games to like the Mario games in general. Not including spinoffs, it'd definitely go to Zelda.

Ha, interesting. My favorite Mario game (and perhaps game in general) is Super Mario World. And I also played Mario 64 on the DS and thought it sucked, and am always getting people telling me to play in on the N64, cuz the DS version sucks. Honestly, I'm not sure that control input can really change a game THAT much, but maybe someday I'll give the game a fair shake on its intended home.

In any case, I voted Metroid. I love love LOVE Metroid games. When I get my preorder poster from Gamestop, that puppy's going up on my wall. :D

Of course, I also love the other two franchises. As stated above, SMW is perhaps my favorite game ever, and also up there are SMW2 and Galaxy. And on the Zelda front, Wind Waker is another of my favorite games ever, and I also thoroughly enjoyed Twilight Princess. So yeah, all three are excellent series,' but I'd have to give the overall nod to Metroid.

Seriously? :? Compared to most games, even some of the weaker Zelda/Metroid games (such as Echoes and... I can't name a Zelda game but TP coulda been a bit more original) are terrific.

I feel like I have three kids who are dying and I can only save one... I choose Metroid, obviously. But I love Zelda and Mario games oh-so-very much. But the atmosphere and sense of dread you get while playing Metroid still gives me this feeling that no other gaming franchise can.

Man, not a very direct comparison...Really just comes down to preference, I mean, we're talking very different games here.

Mario is the most easy to pick up and play and complete, it's the most about timing and precision controls to master, and it's the most light-hearted.

Metroid is the darkest, blending platforming and exploration and character growth into one.

Zelda is heavy on exploration and puzzle-solving...

I mean, the latter two are fairly comparable, I guess, and are generally more revered because they just tend to be more complex and challenging. But then again, I really love the Mario RPGs, and I'd say those are even playing field in terms of play time and complexity, at least for my own tastes. If anything I tend to play each of them MORE in a single playthrough.

I really can't decide, honestly, I love all three for different reasons. SSB is my top series, with the Mario RPGs close behind, and Zelda and Metroid below them. Mario Kart is near the top, too, as far as whole franchises go.

I guess I'll have to vote Mario just because when it boils down to it, I like the Mario RPGs as a series a bit more than Zelda and Metroid, which are a very close tie right below.

I voted Mario because I am a maniac for Mario I love his platformers, console RPG's, Kart Racing, and Parties. Zelda came in second because my first Zelda was Twilight Princess and loved it and then when I went to go buy the others on VC....... well thats a different story. Same goes to Metroid but Donkey Kong will always tie with Mario since they are basically the same 1 with monkeys and the other 1 with humans.
Finally got a PS3 sooo add me if you want. :)

mario vs zelda vs metroid -- which would you choose?

Postby geozeldadude » 22 Jul 2010 13:00

if you had to choose only one of the main 3 nintendo franchises to play for all time, which would it be? for this poll you would only be able to play the main games of the series, i.e. no spin-offs, e.g. no mario kart or paper mario. tough, huh?

much as i love all 3, i'm going to have to go with the metroid series. i'm probably going to be in a minority, but there's something about the atmosphere and the pacing and the solitude of it that fits my personality better than mario and zelda overall. although fire emblem would top all three. haha.
