zelda hands down.
while i love metroid, zelda just takes that spot in my heart, basically because i started zelda with a link to the past and metroid with metroid fusion. you see where this goes. if i was to play super metroid before zelda, id be a metroid baby now, but...

still, i love metroid and i cant get enough of metroid and i own all metroid games (metroid 2 even twice, dunno why) but zelda is still my favourite...

I have to go with Zelda.
There's way more games with a "Mario" feel than Zelda, but some of them feels "samey". Like, we've played it before a dozen times per system. Platformers, 2D and 3D are everywhere, but Zelda-type games....
I feel that playing the real deal from Nintendo will be the only way I can truly be satisfied.

What's weird to me is that even though Nintendo is the home the Zelda series, there seems to be more games of that genre only on the HD consoles. Do they feel that those games won't sell on the Wii/Gamecube/N64??

Well there's no competition here Mario of course cause there's more games in the series and it would keep me busy for a very long time and I love Mario I love Metroid One of my favorite series just not a lot of games in the series. I'm a huge Zelda fan I just haven't been in the Zelda mood for a while.

Personally, I always considered the Mario Land games to be a side series, not part of the main Mario series.

Otherwise, that's a really tough question. I love all three series, they're three of my favorite gaming franchises of all time, along with Castlevania, Mega Man, and the (OLD) Final Fantasy games.

But if I were forced to choose only one series to have to play for all time, it'd be a tossup between Mario and Zelda.

Mario has the fact that, at least for the 2D games, I can pick them up pretty much any time and play them.

The Zelda series, on the other hand, arguably has more "meat" to each game itself, but with that comes more tiresome repetition in all of the ordered things you have to do in each game.

So I don't know. I almost want to say Mario would win. But it's basically too painful to choose. lol

While I do really like Zelda and Metroid, Mario will win ever time. SMW was the first game I ever played and sm64 was my first game for my n64. :)

I really love the 3. But it has to be Zelda, then Mario and Metroid in that order.

Mario has a LOT of good games, but ALTTP just can't be beaten. It just can't.

BTW, SMB3 > SMW. Darn kids. :P

Agreed. SMB3 is, I still maintain, the single best game ever created.

Though you're right, ALttP is amazing (as is Link's Awakening on GB).

I think at the end of the day, this just really isn't a fair question, because each one of these series bring so much different, and so much good. I mean for christ's sake, the first entry in each series literally just about founded each gaming genre

SMB - Side-Scrolling Platformer
Zelda - Free Roaming Adventure
Metroid - Free Roaming Action

All three were so innovative for their time, it was ridiculous (ridiculously awesome, that is).

I just wish Nintendo would finally make a Star Tropics 3, and make it AWESOME. Don't make it with 3D polygon graphics, just standard, overhead, 2D sprite based for me thanks. I wouldn't object to, say, a 16bit type of style. But otherwise, just give me Mike, his yo-yo, and a quest to go on. I'm good. If this happened, even just on WiiWare, I would do backflips (or at least try).
