Thanks for the numbers!

Like I said, Persona 4 is only making me consider getting a Vita. There needs to be either two or three games that really interest me or a price drop to $100. Hopelessly optimistic for the latter, but expecting the former. :P

I wonder what will happen to Sony if the PS4 launch goes the same way as the PS3's did. I mean, I think they've got a mini PS3 on their hands with the Vita, but could they really take another huge loss like they did with the PS3?
I FEEL ASLEEP!!

I think I'm ready to get a Vita soon
Gravity Rush, Uncharted, Katamari, Sly Cooper 4, (potential) All-Stars Battle Royale, Metal Gear, Rayman, PSP games I missed out on, PS1 games, whatever they announce at E3... even if it dies next year, I'll be satisfied with that lineup. Now to wait for a price drop...

If I had it my way and had to choose which one I think should be the first to leave I would choose microsoft because to me they add nothing of value to the industry, but sadly it seems like sony will be on their way out in a few years. If nintendo consoles finally start getting at least as good third party support that playstation consoles get then it won't affect me much (since i don't really bother with most sony's first party franchises) but it would be quite sad to see such a core gamer focused company exit the industry as opposed to...well...as opposed to microsoft...

whatever happens, I will never ever ever pay for shovel xbox live on top of the internet im already paying for, on top of the wifi adapter, on top of the online passes, on top of the bloody server costs (which nazi EA will soon make an industry standard if someone doesn't do something about that damn company)

sorry got a bit carried away there...but I do hope I'm wrong. I know it seems like I just want microsoft to die and exit the industry, but I would genuinely love it if they gave me a compelling reason to give a damn, preferably with some games.

I'd really like to see some worldwide numbers and compare them to how the 3DS, DS, and PSP did in the same time frame.

I would never consider buying a system for a single game. The Vita is selling 1/3 the amount of the 3DS week to week. The 3DS is at around 17,000,000 while the Vita is stuck at around 2,000,000. The low install base coupled with high budgets for Vita games is spelling big trouble in little Playstation town.

With numbers like that they probably way behind the PSP sales at this point in the lifecycle.

The Vita has a problem with lack of differentiation, why would you get it on the hope that good games might come out when you can get an ios or android device that has lotsa decent games that are very cheap?

Most people won't get a Vita without a convincing argument. Of course that leads us to why Nintendo will never sell games on other game platforms. Why would you buy Nintendo's system when you can get their games on another platform? Analysts who insist that they ought to jump on the appstore bandwagon are just completely confused as to what Nintendo is doing, and has been doing for the last thirty years.

I think that Sony may leave the portable business, because their strategy so far seems to be "spend money until we start making money"... on the other hand they have already spent so much money, and committed to at least another generation.

As for the overall topic of the thread:

Sony: I don't see any scenario where Sony remains an electronics company and stops selling Playstations.

Nintendo: they're in the same boat as Sony, but they don't have other divisions, so I don't see them exiting consoles unless it kills them.

Microsoft: they have a lot of things going on other than consoles, so while they are in a good market position now if they took two solid generations of terrible sales then they would get out of the console business.

If things doesn't go right, Nintendo could lose even more of their dedicated core fans to Sony and Microsoft next gen. It happens every gen, and the fanbase is shrinking with each system.

I think Nintendo could stop doing home consoles and focus more on handhelds (if the Wii does as "well" as the Gamecube), which could be the end of Nintendo to many who don't play any handheld game system. To prevent this, they need the strongest 3rd party support that they've ever had since Super NES and a high quantity of high quality 1st party games from ALL, if not most, of their franchises and new IPs.

Re-capturing that blue ocean crowd isn't going to be easy if they aren't interested in the system. Especially since many people didn't stay interested for long with the Wii.

NOT NINTENDO! Unless they keep ignoring their true fans' desires, but I can't see that happening. I see fans of their big franchises everywhere.
In my day-to-day life, I have never once seen an Xbox 360 in someone's home, so my gut instinct is to believe that Sony would beat out Microsoft. I think the sales for the 360 are lower, too? I dunno, maybe I just don't know the right people. It seems that there's little on the 360 that you can't get on PC or PS3.
