Your favorite RARE game/series

Postby HammerGalladeBro » 28 Jun 2012 23:35

While watching a playthrough of Banjo-Tooie, I just remembered how great their games were back in the day, and this got me courious, since I don't think a similar thread has been made, if so, call the mods and lock it.

Which one is your favorite Rareware (or if that's the case, RARE) game?

My personal favorites would be the Banjo-Kazooies, except Nuts & Bolts, haven't played it.

Can't be anything but Donkey Kong, right? I mean Goldeneye had GREAT multiplayer, and Killer Instinct is probably my favorite fighting game, but the stuff they did with Donkey Kong was AMAZING. I never really played Banjo-Kazooie, although I have played Nuts & Bolts and I can say it is very fun creating your own cars to get past certain obstacles.

Anyway, Donkey Kong all the way!

My favorite would have to be Goldeneye 007. The first level is just amazing. Plus, the multiplayer is quite fun if you have someone to play with. And just to note, the remake that Activision published on the Wii sucked so much balls. It was like wearing the power glove and playing the Virtual Boy at the same time.

Now, my second choice would have been Donkey Kong series. I have yet to played the sequels of DK Country (Honestly, I didn't like the first one that much), but DK64 and Diddy Kong Racing are just freakin' awesome.

A little random but when I finish both Banjo-Kazooie and DK64 (I'm only in like the first 2 worlds of each game, been lazy, what can I say) I'll rate which one goes on top, but for now: B-K = DK64

How am I supposed to choose between Goldeneye and the DK games? That's my childhood! I guess I have to choose Goldeneye because it's one game rather than a series. I have Goldeneye sitting in my N64 right now actually. I think I'll go play it.

DK by far! I've clocked in so many hours in the GBA ports of Country, I wouldn't even need Land, Diddy Racing and 64 and it would still be my favorite!

Conker was an amazing game. So many references, so much vulgar, but a surprisingly deep story. It was once my favorite game of all time, but that game has since been overlapped by Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga. Other than that, Banjo-Tooie is also up there at the top. It was basically my Mario X Zelda crossover dream come true. Then again, Mickey's Speedway was fun. So was Diddy Kong Racing. And Star Fox Adventures didn't suck at all... wow I've played a lot of RARE games!
Favorite Game: Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (GBA)
Just Finished: Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (3DS)
Now Playing: Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask (3DS)

I've only played the Donkey Kong Country games and Killer Instinct.

And since I'm not a fan of most traditional fighters...the DKC series pretty much wins by default. But they're still really awesome, classic games. :D

Truth be told, I have no played a lot of Rare games at all.

While I grew up with gaming since NES years, I got a Genesis in place of SNES and on N64, since games were expensive, I had no money and my family wasn't in the best position, I only got games I *really* wanted, and even then not all of them.

The only Rare games I own are Perfect Dark Arcade (on XBLA), Perfect Dark Zero (as a joke, haven't played it; was $2) and Star Fox Adventures on GCN.

I loved Goldeneye and played it a lot when my uncle had it, and I rented/beat/loved Conker's Bad Fur Day on N64. I also rented/loved DK64, but I didn't beat it.

I barely played the DKC games, only played Killer Instinct a few times, never played Jet Force Gemini and I only experienced the demo of Banjo-Kazooie (which I liked and will get one day).

So unfortunately, I am not good on this subject. Of what I played, Goldeneye/PDA, Conker and Star Fox were my favorites.

I just thought of something.

What would have happened if Nintendo didn't mess with Star Fox Adventures and let it live as Dinosaur Planet? Who do you think would own the I.P.?

And how well do you think Banjo-Kazooie and Conker would be if Nintendo kept the rights of them?

Nintendo would of killed Conker messes with their family friendly image. as for Banjo I think he would of been delegated to the handhelds.based on th e Banjo pilot and the DS game game that never came to be.

If Rare was still on Nintendo's side, Banjo-Kazooie and Conker would have been in Smash Bros for sure. Which is a real bummer because we all know that Microsoft doesn't have that much IP to copy SSB like Sony is doing.

Now when people bring up the topic, Nintendo should buy Rare back, I beg to differ. Sure we get both Conker, B-K, and Perfect Dark series, but when is the last time they made a good game....A decent one at that? They made great games back in the day, however, most of their team, if not all, has gone and left.

Well if Microsoft doesn't make a new B-K game or Conker game in the near future, I'ma be pesto!

The only Rare games I can think of I really got into were the Donkey Kong Land games on the GameBoy. I bought DKL 2 after playing it on my cousins GB when he was round once. Loved it, and then went out and bought the others. DKL 2 will always be my favourite though.

It's so hard to say. Killer Instinct is my favorite fighting game, and I really love Goldeneye. I have some of my fondest memories with the first two Banjo-Kazooie games (but Tooie more than the first). The Donkey Kong Country series are probably my favorite platformers (and DKC2 is my favorite SNES game aside from Earthbound). However, I ultimately decided on choosing Conker's Bad Fur Day. That is my favorite game aside from Majora's Mask. The dialogue was hilarious, albeit vulgar, and the music is some of the best I've heard in a video game. (Plus, if it hadn't been for this game, I would've never found my favorite movie/book A Clockwork Orange).

I love the old Rareware so much. I own and pretty much have beaten every game they've made, except Perfect Dark and Jet Force Gemini.

Not necessarily. They have Halo, Crackdown, Gears of War, Alan Wake, Banjo Kazooie, Perfect Dark, Conker, Kameo, Viva Pinata, and everything from Twisted Pixel (Splosion Man, Captain Smiley, Gunstringer, etc). Maybe more.

That's at least enough franchises to have the same amount of characters that appeared in SSB on N64, and that's if you only bring over one character from each. And then there's your Avatar. And they could also pull the Sony card and try to get exclusive 3rd party characters.

Well, Conker was intended to be a family game in the first place. He wouldn't have been killed, just reverted back to his original intent. I doubt he'd have gone on to do much more though.

Banjo-Kazooie would've been all sorts of popular and better off and in SSB.

Conker would've been an assist or vaguely mentioned as a Sticker or Trophy, but probably not have gone on much more than a single game or two.

Unless Retro made a Conker game.

I love all those games posted, but I must admit that Goldeneye really plays a big part in my gaming life when I was a pre-teen (10-13 years of age) and I just remember it too fondly. Playing multi-player with friends, beating the game in the middle of the night, trying to get those cheats. Almost impossible. Still, an awesome game.

I picked Banjo since it is the best series Rare made imo. I do like the other games they made. Thank goodness I still have DK64,Banjo-Tooie(lost banjoie-kazooie =[),jetforce gemini and conker. I have spent many, many hours playing Conker's multiplayer with my bros.

Killer Instinct. Hands down. I still remember being blown away by seeing the first game, and telling my friend "MAN, someday, games are actually going to LOOK like this on consoles!". I also vividly remember one morning that I randomly decided to go to the mall early, and walked into the arcade that used to be there ("Tilt" was awesome), and they were just setting up the new copy of KI2 they had just received. They turned it on, and the guy who ran the place let me play a free game to test it out. It was awesome. For it's time, no game looked as good as KI2 did.

But to tell you the truth, I would not want to see KI on Xbox (as in ever), and I'm not sure I'd want Rare to make a new Killer Instinct anyway, considering that everyone who worked on the old ones is probably gone, and they don't seem to remember how to make good games anymore. So even IF it was on a Nintendo system, I still don't think I'd want it. I wouldn't want a 3D KI game. I'd honestly want them to make another 2D pre-rendered game (because it could look even better).

But sometimes..........sometimes it's better to just leave things in the past. I'll always have KI 1 and 2. That's gonna have to be enough, because I'd rather have those good memories, than to have the series ruined by a craptacular new installment.

Maybe my most fond memories from any Rareware games are getting to K. Rool in Donkey Kong Countries 2 & 3, since it took me a lot of time to get to him, especially in 2, and playing through Rusty Bucket Bay in Banjo-Kazooie, I thought the level was hard, but the music compensated it. And to be honest the last Rareware game I got was Killer Instinct on SNES, I got it on 2002 along with other games, a year before my mom sold (read: gave away) my SNES. *regretsnotgettingALinktothePastaswell*

And as a homage to Rareware's glorious days, I'm currently trying to recreate some levels/music from their games in WarioWare: D.I.Y., starting with Rickety Race from DKC2, this video inspired me to do it:
