moral dilemma...

Postby cortjezter » 05 Dec 2009 19:42

so i took advantage of best buy's cyber monday deal: buy a game from the selected titles and get a 20$ psn card free.

i chose ratchet & clank: tools of destruction, for 30 bucks.

however, today when i went to pick up my order, i noticed when i got home that they actually gave me the NEW r&c game: crack in time, a 60$ game.

should i keep it and just enjoy it, or be honest and try to return/exchange it for the correct one? since they're different games, their customer service might not even believe me now that i've left the store.

thoughts?

I've been presented with similar situations, though not this drastic...usually not having a ticket on the ticket when eating out or something.

When it happens to me, I usually think, "If I was this business, what would I want?" and I always let the waiter/waitress know. If they make the decision to not add the item to the ticket, at least it was their decision, and not mine.

In this case, I would probably let them know, and see how they handle it.

So, you got the newer title for $30?

Keep it.

Usually I wouldn't be like that, but we're talking Best Buy here. There aren't many chains I dislike more than Best Buy, so yeah, screw 'em. Keep it. It's a fantastic game anyway, better than its predecessor without a shadow of a doubt. (though honestly, you should get around to playing Tools of Destruction first anyway).
Move along.

i don't actually mind that i got the game i did; in fact i'd probably wind up buying the new one sooner or later anyway. just trying to decide if it's morally acceptable to keep it, even though i technically didn't pay for the newer one.

maybe i'll make it a simple poll ;)

Keep it. It is still a game you would have gotten as you have said and I'm a POSITIVE Gamestop won't be missing their $30 this holiday season.

Just enjoy it.

This happened to me the other day! Well, kind of. I bought a few Cube games and a Gameboy player and the guy didn't charge me for the Gameboy player. It was only $10 dollars and I didn't notice it untill I got home so I kept it.

If I were you, I would return it. I mean, what I did was wrong but your like not paying for what you should have to for that game. Do what you want though.

Dammit cort! I keep reading this topic as "mortal dilemma..." and I think you are in serious danger. Then I always click on the link and I remember that it is this crap.

In all seriousness though, I would at least tell the store about the mistake - what they choose to do after that is up to them.

I'd contact the store regarding what happened. The "moral high" you'll get from being honest with the store should feel a lot better than whatever extra enjoyment you'd get from keeping the game.

I would keep it. As far as a company like that is concerned $30 would be peanuts. Plus if anything you'll just highlight some poor guy's mistake (which they'll probably get bollocked for). So do the nice thing Cort, keep it. :P

Call the store, but don't tell them who you are or what game you have. Feel them out a little. If they start to get pushy, really rub their faces in the fact that you have their game, their $30, and their testicles. You own them now. They will end up like Circuit City if they mess with you.

Keep it. I bought a budget-priced Mario game online from Gamestop some years ago (don't remember which game), and they sent me a new copy of the $50 Mario Super Sluggers instead. I didn't really want it, but on the other hand, I got a $50 game for $20, so I just kept it and bought the other game elsewhere.

i chose in-store pick-up, actually. but since they taped the manifest/invoice across the cover of the game, i only saw the back while in the store, and it said "rachet" and "clank"; i assumed it was the correct one, since i had no idea what the BACK cover art looked like ;)

they said they couldn't take back an opened game, even if it was their fault, and they lost money from it. oh well.

, if this was GameStop, they would have probably said, "Bring it back! We'll swap it out no problem at all!(and we'll sell your copy as "new" even though it's opened)"

BTW, was the game already opened when you started this thread? Or was the decision made after the thread was started?

Keep it. If their service f***ed up and gave you a higher value game...? Well, that's kind of their own fault.

Yes, double-standard I suppose. I work customer service over the phone. Even if we end up giving someone of higher value than we were supposed to, it's usually more inconvenient to return it/replace it anyway.

Okay, this is kinda funny. I just had to resurrect this thread when this happened to me:

My local FYE at home was going out of business. While I was at college, my little brother called to let me know that they had R&CF ToD for a high percentage off for clearance. When all was said and done, it was about $9 or $10. I said, "Sweet, buy it and I'll pay ya back later."

Fast forward a few weeks when I get home - I open it up, and notice that the game is in its own little sleeve inside the case. Apparently at FYE they kept the game behind the counter while the case was on display. But when I looked at the bottom of it, I noticed it had the new PS3 logo. Lo and behold, it was the new R&C Crack in Time. All sales were final and the store is completely shut down now anyway.

How's that for coincidence? All I could think about when this happened was this thread. Welp, I just saved a lot of money I suppose.

If this was a mom & pop store then of course you should return it, but come on now, it's Best Buy.

They don't care about you, so why should you care about them?

Giving your opinion on what he should do, when he already did it more than 2 years ago seems to apply to this rule. Also, if you actually read the thread you would know what happened instead of guessing... -_-

If it was truly dead it would have been locked. Plus I'll leave it to the actual mods to decide whats important and not important enough of my post to be deleted.

I did read the thread genius. :|

Was "which I'm sure you did" not clear enough for ya?

He keep it in the end which is why I said "which I'm sure you did".

Plus, a situation like this could happen again to anyone. I liked reading other people's opinions, and what they'd do in this situation.

What if you purchased an online 3DS or Wiiware/Virtual Console game but wasn't charged? Would you still call Nintendo and tell them about the error?
