mario 3 hands down. in fact, i to this day believe mario 3 to be the best game ever made, with ocarina of time close behind.

mario 2 also holds a special place for me... it was just so different, yet so beautifully done.

mario world is also up there for me.. it took some of the innovations of '3' and expanded on them exponentially. a real masterpiece.

<< mod edit: N5 Dragon's topic/poll was merged with this one. they're not distinct enough to warrant 2 threads for essentially the same thing. --cortjezter >>

Super Mario 64 wins it for me. The italian stallion really made the transition from 2D to 3D really well. (I don't count Super Mario RPG as 3D :P)
"In a news conference, Iwata said Wii isn't battling rivals directly because it's offering different, easier-to-play games." Hur-fing-ray.

Nice move, Nintendo. If you can't beat 'em, target another, easier to coerce, audience.

That's because it wasn't based on a Mario game. It was based on the Japanese game Doki Doki Panic.

From the list in the poll

1. Super Mario 3
2. Super Mario 1
3. Super Mario World
4. Yoshi's Island
5. Super Mario 2
6. Mario 64
7. Mario Sunshine

But SMRPG would've gotten second if it had been included.

All fantastic games.

I think SMB3 is the best on the list. But we all have sentimental favs as well. I remember drooling over the SMB2 cover story in the first issue of Nintendo Power (the one with the clay Mario leaping into the air). I was about 10, and for weeks I would stare a the level layout pictures, imagining what the game would be like to actually play. Finally, after saving my allowance for restless months before the game's release, I was surprised when my mother picked me up from school with a brand new game sitting there on the passenger seat. She took my savings, bolstered it with a couple weeks advance and waited for store to open to get one of the first copies. Rarely have I know such joy (or loved my mom that much). I feel like playing it right now.

all i can say is 3, 2, 1

Every SMB originals were better evertime they came out

1 was so fun
2 was so cool, a featured alot more interaction
3 was smple one of the best game i have ever played
i didnt own an snes or GC so i cant speak for those games but SM64 was just I dont know not the same feel dont get me wrong, what a great transformation to 3-D, and the Boss battles were Awsome but i wasnt fond of the non-lienar gameplay, one of the reasons i love mario is i didnt have to think about where i wanted to go next it was always right....

Where's 'Mario Is Missing'? 8)

I'm gonna have to go with Super Mario Bros. and Mario 64. But it's very close. I love all Mario games. The only one I DIDN'T like was Super Mario RPG :? .

Oh, and here's a list of all the Mario games...just for fun.

favorite super mario game?

Postby geozeldadude » 03 Sep 2009 16:46

i had to leave off super mario bros. 2 JP (i.e. the lost levels) (FC) b/c there's a limit on the # of options. if i do a follow-up poll i'll include it though.

i'm predicting galaxy or SMB3 will win this one. i'm going to have to vote for SMB3 though. it has surprises at everywhere you turn and it's a game you can come back to again and again.

Super Mario Land of course! Why you ask? Well, because it is simply the best 2D handheld Mario I've ever played. It had new gameplay elements, awesome music, great bosses, and addictive gameplay. It also had that cool bonus round where you could potentially win up to 3 1-ups! Plus, it was 2D Mario goodness on the go, baby.

SML?? seriously?? that's totally my least fav mario game. it's not just that the graphics are primitive; the game just feels generic to me and lacks the "mario magic".

I like that Mario Galaxy was so ambitious and it did a great job at creating something unique, but I still love how much more simple Mario 64 is. That game feels much more natural to control than Galaxy and it's much more more fun to me because of that.

I will always hold SMB 3 as the top Mario game. The levels. The new power-ups. The new enemies. The incredible music. The great gameplay balance. And the secrets. Even if you beat the game a billion times, you can always find something you missed before. =D

Mario64 was easily the best out of those games (besides SM3, that was fun too!). By the way, is there any reason Super Mario Galaxy isn't up there. That's the best mario game. :?

Galaxy is favorite of all of them too (though I'm not a particularly big fan of Mario games), but I think it's not here because this is Legacy Systems (not Wii).

I'm sort of surprised by how close Mario 64 and Mario 3 are. Personally I think Mario 3 is the better game. However, my favorite is Mario 64. This is much like the fact that I believe ZOot is the best Zelda game, however, Majora's Mask is my favorite.

I have to admit that the jumping in Sunshine was entertaining. I spent several hours finding new ways of jumping.

I know a lot of folks missed some of the jump capabilities of M64, but you could pull of some crazy stuff in Mario sunshine.

Same man. And SM Land 2. Those were the only Mario games I grew up playing. Probably not even the best in the series but I definitely love them more than any of the other legacy Mario games (64 included). Just because of the nostalgia.

Of course Galaxy would have my vote if it were on ALL Mario games. That game really is a perfect 3D platformer.

Given the options of the poll, I'll go with Super Mario World though I love them all to be honest. I liked all of the hidden levels and exits and all of the various paths that could be opened up on the world map. The cape feather also happens to be one of my favorite power-ups. World is just an excellent game in all respects. Mario is king.

Its extremely hard for me to choose. Each of them has had such a huge impact on my childhood, as well as my gaming life. I have extremely fond memories playing each game, minus Super Mario Sunshine. That game shouldnt be on the list at all. But anyways, if I absolutely have to choose one, its going to have to be Super Mario World.

Augh, I feel like I just chose one of my kids over the others (if I had kids). I adore Super Mario Bros, and SMB 3 is one of the best games of all time. Turning on Super Mario 64 on for the first time was one of the most memorable moments of my life. But Super Mario World just has something so magical about it that really sucked me in and made it one of, if not the greatest game Ive ever played. Good God, I never knew choosing would be so hard.

EDIT: This would be even harder if Super Mario Galaxy was in the list!

Pretty much a tie between SMB3 and SMW, both amazing in their own way, speaking about all the stories about getting video games when young,
I remember when i was around 10 or 11 and it was Christmas morning, I woke up hours before anyone to just look at the packages, wondering what was inside. When we started opening them up, i became more and more disappointed, all I was getting was clothes, what i really wanted was alttp for GBA. On the last present i was so miserable, i didn't even want to open it, my parent s insisted, when i opened it, it was a pair of slacks, i almost died right there but my mom told me to hold it up. I pulled it slowly and the game tumbled out from inside the pants. It was the happiest moment of my life, I burst into to tears of joy. My parents just laughed. :)
History: NES, SNES, GBC, GBA, GC, DS, Wii, DSi

Now playing: Majora's Mask and waiting for the next Layton

Super Mario Sunshine, if only for the huge way in which it helped me plough through the biggest (and very last) bout of depression I'd ever experienced about 6 years ago.

Oh, and the accapella Mario tune, let's not forget that. :D
