Interested in Participating in a Podcast?

Postby D3stiny_Sm4sher » 24 Feb 2010 15:30

Hey, everyone.

If you've at all paid attention to my ScrewAttack account or YouTube account you've probably noticed that I've been tinkering with a lot of experimental ideas. I just can't leave my passion for gaming with text alone. Since I can't produce quality video like Rinry and JOT can without the proper resources, I've decided that audio would be a better venue to look into.

My idea for a podcast (not exclusive to Nintendo content) is essentially this:

Instead of a bunch of people in a room discussing events and the like for one or two hours, each podcast would be more like a "capsule", maybe 10-30 minutes about a specific topic, whether current or not. The format can change with each segment: "Single Player" if it's just one person's opinions (basically a blog but in audio form), "Multiplayer Mode" (multiple people's recorded opinions strung together), or "Co-Op Mode" (multiple people having a recorded discussion, either in person or over SKYPE). Then there'd probably be "Versus Mode" where two people debate two different ends of an argument.

Like I said, the important thing here is that it'd be split into smaller chunks based on focused topics. Yes, the idea comes from BitMob's Mobcast, but even then, that podcast consists of 4-5 topics in a row, sometimes they blend together. This would be one topic at a time.

The thing is, I'd want reader participation! Incorporate you guys into the conversation!

If you want an idea of what this podcast would be like from a Single Player perspective and have played through BioShock 2 (or don't care if it gets spoiled), check this out:
http://screwattack.com/downloads/view/S ... y-SPOILERS

I'm trying to get your favorite GoNintendo personalities to contribute to the next episode -- we'll see how that turns out.

I'd like to produce something this weekend since I won't be able to review a game. If you're at all interested in sending a written e-mail or recording your opinions, please send them to my e-mail address at D3stiny.Sm4sher@gmail.com and answer the following questions:

Thoughts on Nintendo's announcements? Release dates they revealed?

How do you feel about The one-two punch of Galaxy 2 and Other M this summer? Good idea, bad idea? Will they regret it come the holidays, or do you think they have Zelda lined up for the ultimate Nintendo trifecta in a single year?

What did you think of the gameplay we've seen of games from the summit? (I know this footage won't be out much until later today/tomorrow)

Be sure to include the name you'd like to be credited for.
---

I still don't have a name for the podcast, just the different types of segments, so ideas for that are welcome, too.

Lastly, I don't know of any good places to host a podcast, whether for downloading or easy streaming, so feedback on that is appreciated.

Thanks for any ideas and support, and with any luck, we can get a community-focused, topic-based podcast off the ground!

It would be better to chose you rather then oh IDK T27duck. If t27duck was involved it might as well be called trollcast.

Sounds like a cool idea, but like you said, the show you took the idea from tackles more than one topic, that induces people to stay tuned expecting their topic of interest in the event that they are not intersted on the other subjects... If your show will focus on one topic, with the possibility of being an older one, I think it will miss that holding factor to keep listeners.

Just a thought.. Maybe I'm missing something.

The idea is that oftentimes podcasts have topics I don't care about. =P I'd rather skip and get straight to what I care about listening to. I totally see what you're saying, though. I just think it'd be better to be like, "Here's three topics we discussed, conveniently broken into three parts so if you don't want to listen to RE5 DLC talk, hey, skip it and get straight to the Cave Story discussion, etc."

I think this is a great idea, getting the larger GoNintendo community a chance to discuss gaming topics themselves in way that reaches a larger audience than just those people who happen upon any one thread.

Count me in as interested.

I also think it should be about more than one topic as it might get a little tiresome to hear about one sole topic for a whole hour. With multiple authors you might get a lot of redundancy in opinions about the topics especially if they're not all working with intimate cohesion.

If the style is a bit like another podcast, that's okay. It's not like they invented pod casting in the first place. "Good artists borrow, great artists steal"

luckily, podcasting tools exist that allow for the creation of chapters, not unlike a movie on dvd. they could be set per topic or per speaker. so listeners could jump to any spot they like.

glad to see people are interested!

As for Cort saying he was excluded, if ANYBODY should be included, it should be Cort, for the main reason of him keeping everybody on topic.

@Cort
Wait, how can this be done? Any ideas where I should distribute this sucker?

@everyone interested
Check out the media that comes out in the next day or two and then this weekend (preferably before the end of Saturday) either send me an e-mail answering those questions, or record yourself discussing it. =)

I do want to try to do some conferencing over SKYPE but am not entirely sure how to do it yet...

Oh, and feel free to ask any random questions, maybe there can be a Q/A section as well.

Garageband (app) makes it a total cinch. Check this out:

As for distributing, maybe it's worth creating a blogspot blog for it; I know that has some fairly robust yet easy tools for podcasting.

You know, I hate to be cynical about this, but the logical side of me can't help but notice something; the main reason I listen to the four podcast/vodcasts I do is because they're pretty humorous on top of being informative. Maybe it's not just the humor though, maybe it's that they just work together well, from a conversational stand-point. I'm just not sure a group of people that don't previously know each other could get their chemistry going if they're only making podcasts once a week or once a month. But then again, I've never listened to a podcast whose crew was made in a similar fashion (although I am aware of at least one like this, but I chose not to listen to it because it came out of a rather 360 heavy forum) so the whole thing could really surprise me.

I'd definitely give it a listen, and given what I've just said, I'd give it several shows before I make a judgement, but I'm personally very nervous with public speaking and lacking a mic to participate.

As for humor, oh, I'm sure we're going to get plenty of humorous responses, some of them possibly by yours truly

I've already got my podcast that's modelled somewhat after GoNintendo's (I've hit the top 10% of the listenership on podomatic last year!). It's based around other hobbies in addition to Nintendo, such as board- and card- gaming, music, and we're adding more for this year. However, one of our segments is podcast networking, so I'd love to exchange views with your show when it begins, and perhaps make a few cameo appearances or have you show up on my show over Skype or something.

My suggestion would be to strongly consider multiple topics for the show rather than trying to force discussion about a specific topic. A show about the N64, for example, is fine, but don't restrict the show to each person's list of top N64 games. A couple topics allow the participants to naturally find the topic that creates the most interesting discussion and keeps things moving. Getting bogged down with too much structure and a single topic can make the show feel slow/boring. In my opinion, podcasts are best matched with relatively shallow topics such as news and storytelling. I know you addressed this already, but I'd encourage you to write if you'd like to explore a topic more thoroughly. Plenty of creative and interesting written discussion pops up on video game blogs and winds up making its way around the internet.

Oh, and, the edit button isn't appearing for me, otherwise this would have been added to my first post.

Yea, edit button seems to be gone for some reason...

Anyway, I DO agree with the above idea of not VERY specific topics.

For example, maybe soon we could an episode on "favorite gaming memories with the N64." Share stories and the like. It's a focused topic -- N64 era gaming -- without being too specific so it ends up repetitive.

Also, believe me, I DO want conversation-based elements here. That's where Co-Op mode comes in. Problem is we need SKYPE and I need software that will allow me to record SKYPE. Anyone got ideas on where I can find something like that for free?

Also, to everyone above who's expressed interest -- thanks! Glad to see some support here! If you're up for tackling this episode's topic (only doing one general topic with three sub topics) please see the original post! Send me an e-mail!

You don't NEED skype, although it's probably easiest to get everyone to install it and exchange skype-names and get a conference call going.
There are other options, such as Digsby, which uses people's normal IMs (MSN, Y!, Aim, G-mail messenger, &c.) and can invite all of them into a single video/voice conference)

As for recording all of that, you can either use an external recording device such as a sansa player or ipod with microphone strategically positioned between you and your computer speakers, or install audacity and have it record from an attached mic so that it'll pick up both your voice and the computer's speakers.
