Friend codes - Obviously not enforced by Nintendo?

Postby Autosaver » 06 Mar 2010 17:54

I've been told that Nintendo forces people to have friend codes for online.

How come MH:Tri is having a gamertag kind of thing. NO CODES?
So really, its up to the developer to put friend codes in? D=

If the game is ran on Nintendo's servers, then they have to use Friend Codes.

If the game is ran on the devloper/publisher's own servers, they can do whatever they want.

Prime Example:
Anything by EA (Medal of Honor, Madden, etc.) - those games use the EA nation servers for online gaming

So obviously, not everyone can blame it on Nintendo. :P
It is up to the developer.

It's still Nintendo's fault for limiting the service, and offering a half-ass online chat system.

There is no sense of community of any kind when it comes to playing on the Wii, and that just makes it a dull system in my book. I chat & play with my friends on a regular basis on my 360, and though I would love to do that on Brawl or even Mario Kart, I just can't.

I haven't done much online gaming besides on Nintendo platforms, but I can agree that I don't think they're very well done. Mario Kart Wii was handled VERY well and I was very happy with that, as I was with Excite Bots, but in both cases it was much easier to just play with nameless strangers and know in my head that someone was on the other side.

I'm almost scared to try another company's online because I'm sure it will trump Nintendo's. Universal friend codes, that's all that they need...

Styster, funny you mentioned that bit about universal FCs because that's what Vicarious Visions did with GH5 with people being able to import their friends from the Wii Address book versus the game having its own code. More interesting though is that in an interview with 4ColorRebellion prior to launch a rep from VV confirmed that the feature has been an option open to devs for sometime prior to its implementation in GH5.

Considering that the full rundown of features showing how much attention was being shown to the Wii version of GH5 on IGN suggested that many of those features were Nintendo approved, it doesn't seem like it's a special case issue like the few EA games that run on EA's servers (MoH: Heroes 2 for instance) or Monster Hunter Tri.

The developer/publisher still has to get permision from Nintendo to not use Friend Codes. EA just knows how to talk to Nintendo, I guess.

I don't understand why Nintendo keeps friend codes, to be honest. Maybe they should offer friend codes as a parental control type of thing, if people are actually concerned about their kids being kidnapped or whatever.

It's easy to understand. It's just not something to be agreed with. The obvious is child protection. Nintendo's ways only makes kids stay kids. At the same time there is blame on the parent too for shielding their child from the horrors of the world around them. If someone is being uncalled for then the smart thing to do is click and the person is ignored or never seen again in your view. If people don't like the language they can leave or join in on the fun. For parents if they have an issue then here's a tissue. It's a waste of our time and Nintendo's time to be policing.

why not just have friend codes for games that are rated below T and M and call it a day. an adult or a teen is used to internet crap anyway so you dont need friend codes withthose games. kids are not supposed to play those games anyway so there is no need for child protection in games liek that...

The day that happens will be the day all the loopholes kids can use to get more mature games are closed. Pretty much impossible.

As long as parents are stupid, kids will always have access to mature games. So Nintendo has still got to have it's Friend Codes policy...

Yeah I never liked the friend code system. I don't have anyone's friend code in my Wii. but that's cool that monster hunter 3 is going to use a gamertag thing and not a friend code.
"whos more foolish the fool or the fool who follows the fool"? - Obi Wan Kenobi Star Wars A New Hope. oh btw i won't be giving out my friend codes cause I'm to lazy to see what they are and i never play people online. :)

I gave up on the Wii with online due to friend codes, so if I see them on the next console count me out as an owner.
