Disc 4 of FF8 not working because it's not "PS1 format" WTF?

Postby Eternal Rain » 19 May 2010 23:21

So... I'm playing Final Fantasy 8 and I get to the point where it asks me to switch to disc 4. I do as it says and things seem okay at first... until it says "wrong disc!" So I tried a few more times to see if it's a problem with the PS1. Eventually I just turn it off and try by putting in the disc fresh. Now I get a message saying "Please insert a PlayStation format disc." Utterly baffled, I try again on my PS2 and it says the same thing (only adding "PS2 format" to that as well).

What the hell does this mean?! This is seriously ticking me off, because with FF7 I get a used copy that sometimes screws up on disc 2 (though I was still able to beat the game regardless), and now with FF8, a game that came to be brand new and sealed when it arrived, and yet for some reason I happen to get a copy where disc 4 is screwed up in some fashion. I mean what the hell happened?!

So what should I do, return it to Amazon to get a replacement copy, or should I contact Square and see if they'll do anything?

Are your discs scratched? For that matter, are they legitimate copies? You might've been ripped off if they weren't.

We purchased the game BRAND NEW off of Amazon themselves, the thing was still sealed in the usual wrapping most PS1 games came in, and everything looks perfectly fine. There is absolutely no way for me to think these are not legit copies. I am still really ticked off over this whole matter, they BETTER replace this game free of charge for selling me a defective product. They better not give me any "90 day" bull crap because how could they have honestly expected me to know it was disc 4 months ago when there was a whole bunch opf stuff working against me to figure it out then?!

I'm sorry, I'm just really upset over this matter. I've played that game for two months now (got distracted by so many other games over that time), finally got to disc 4 and THIS is what it gives me... a freaking "insert PlayStation format disc." Even the freaking PS2 can't read it. I mean what the hell happened?! Someone screw up during production and forget to put the game code on disc 4?!

*sigh* And to think that if I owned a PS3 I wouldn't be having this problem. Would have just downloaded it digitally, no disc swapping or whatnot, just the entire game on one system. I know I'm starting to see why Nintendo stuck to carts for that gen... lol.

Well I can't really help, but I can only say that after googling ( FF8 "disc 4" error ) and ignoring torrent/download links, there are many people talking about disc four giving errors on PS1~3(for the older backward-compatible models). Some people say switching consoles helped, others say that 'if you can see through the disc when held up to the light, then it is defective and will never work', and others just copy it or convert to ISO for PC-emulation, or bought a new copy that actually worked. Someone else said that disc 3 wouldn't work unless their PS2 was standing up, but disc 4 wouldn't work unless the system was laying down. It seems like a really weird inconsistent problem...maybe it IS due to manufacturing errors, who knows.

Do you have a PSP? You could download it and play it there if you had one. I really don't know how else to help you. Maybe you should just return it to Amazon and say it's defective.
