What does Retro Studios have up their sleeve?

Postby hcpina » 23 May 2010 15:32

I think we can expect a new game by Retro Studios to be shown at this year's E3.
What do you guys think?? I'm going to either Kid Icarus or F-Zero.

Definitely not F-Zero. I doubt Nintendo would assign Retro a racing game... I expect a brand new IP. Maybe a revival of one of their many cancelled games in the Gamecube era. Whatever it is, I expect it to look incredible from an artistic and technical level.

And of course it is going to play very well. Oh, and it will probably include Motion+. But as to what the game actually is, I have no idea. I'm leaning towards a third person action game, so maybe Kid Icarus. But I doubt it.

Kid Icarus would be fine, so long as they do it right.

But honestly, if that game is being made, I'd rather see an internal team do it. Or at least someone else. Personally, I want to see Retro do a totally original, new IP. Both because Nintendo could always use news IPs, and because looking back at a game like Ravenblade, it seems to me that they have some pretty creative ideas. I'd rather it wasn't another first person game, whatever it is. Something new, that they haven't done before.

I seriously doubt Nintendo would pay one of their top second party developers, to sit on their hands and not actually make anything. Last I remember hearing, they claimed to be hard at work on more than one project, actually.

Ninty seems to like to put some of their franchises through the washing machine every now and again to freshen things up a bit. Retro did great work on Metroid so I would bet good money on Retro being passsed another one of Nintendos premier IPs to work on. I cant wait to find out.
... don't worry, as it doesn't make any difference.

I would hope they would be working on Star Fox, but I don't know if they want to do another sci-fi adventure. Who knows...I'm sure they could improve upon the basic formula of the series.

Whatever they are doing, I will probably buy it, as they have proven to me that they are an awesome developer. I learned this after playing Metroid Prime 3...beautiful game.

I remember Retro Studios worked on Custom Robo on the Gamecube, and that was one of the greatest and most underrated games I ever played.

An announcement to a new entry in the franchise would come out of left field for most, as they've been absolutely silent on them since the DS outing, outside of an assist trophy in Brawl.

At least Pit has a full character in SSBB.

I don't believe Retro was involved with the development of Custom Robo... but I could be wrong.

I also highly doubt that. Again, Retro is pretty much Nintendo's #1 Western "internal" western developer now. The Metroid Prime series was largely successful, with all three games selling over a million copies. Whatever they're working on next, it might not be "huge", as in Kid Icarus, or another major Nintendo franchise. But it very well might be a potentially huge new IP, that could in fact turn into a new successful franchise for Nintendo going forward. You never know.

But they did such an amazing job with the Prime series, I am willing to trust that whatever they're making, it's likely going to at the very least be really good.

yea, I meant 'huge' as in well known fanboy pant's wetting franchise. I think they are working on something new. I don't think kirby or icarus, awesome as they are, would ever sell enough to warrant serious investment on the part of nintendo.

Re: What does Retro Studios have up their sleeve?

Personally, I'd prefer them to make a new IP. I'd love to see what they can do with something that is wholly theirs. I'd be happy to see them do something with some other established franchise, but I'd rather see them make something that is 100% Retro Studios. Like, just maybe, an update to that Raven Blade concept they showed off long ago.

I'd much rather they do their own IP, and Nintendo do games like Kid Icarus, and/or Star Fox, etc., internally, so that THAT way, we all get more awesome games.

I'm also thinking "new IP" for some reason. Not sure.

Would love to hear about/see it in a couple weeks.

I'm maybe thinking a revival of Retro's cancelled GCN project, "Raven Blade".

I really hope it's a new Star Fox and I hope it's titled simply Star Fox Wii. But who knows we will just have to wait to find out.

There is a rumor on the front page that Retro is working a new DK game for Wii. I want someone else to do it like Next Level or EAD Tokyo again. I didn't enjoy the first two Prime games they bored me to tears. Really all I can think of Retro offering to this franchise is a First Person Coconut shooter. I'm sure they could make a good original IP or Starfox. I just don't see a Retro developed DK game to be worthwhile.

WHAT? Bored? You obviously just don't understand the idea behind Metroid games. But I agree I'd rather have EAD Tokyo make it, but Retro has a really talented team, and I know they can make a stellar game.

Uh, Retro has only made the Metroid games so far so we can't say they wouldn't be good at other genres. Just because their first games were First Person doesnt mean they cant make a great Third Person game.

While I really REALLY want Donkey Kong to make a return... Id rather have Retro work on another franchise. But no matter what, I'd be happy!

At this point I would rather play a new Donkey Kong game, than another Mario game. So, I'm ready for it if the rumor is true.

I too would rather have a new Donkey Kong game then a new Mario game. Nintendo needs to take a break from Mario fro awhile. I have Mario Galaxy, Mario Galaxy 2 and New Super Mario Bros. Wii to make me happy.

What I think they should do with Donkey is make him like The Hulk. Hulk ultimate destruction was an awesome game. I think they should make a Donkey Kong game like that where your destroying shovel.

Who knows I'm not going to except a new Donkey Kong game we will just have to wait until Tuesday to see.
