If you are an animation buff, answer this...

My pick is either Clampett or Jones, though Freleng had some excellent comic timing.

Excellent choices.

However, you forgot arguably the funniest of them all: Tex Avery.

True, but Tex's best work was at MGM. I was just listing the 4 main WB cartoon directors. I am a big fan of Avery's wild and sometimes bizzare humor, I just wish more cartoons were made that way.

So out of the 4 WB directors, who is your fave?

EDIT: I also realize Clampett's style of humor is very similar to Avery's, but if I had to choose between the 2, Tex Avery wins hands down.

Clampett's best cartoons are "A Corny Concerto" and "Buckaroo Bugs".

Chuck Jones was somewhat hit or miss, some of his cartoons don't seem funny at all. My favorite Jones cartoon is either "Duck Amuck" or "Rabbit of Seville".

Friz Freleng was a master at combining music and comic timing. "Rhapsody Rabbit" is my all-time favorite Freleng cartoon, and "Baseball Bugs" is hilarious.

Robert McKimson was severely underrated compared to Freleng and Jones. Many of his best cartoons featured Foghorn Leghorn [a character he created], and his Sylvester vs Hippity Hopper [the kangaroo] cartoons are perfect.

All of the ones you mentioned (except the Yosemite Sam cartoons) were made by Chuck Jones.

Tex Avery made many of the MGM cartoons:
Droopy
Screwy Squirrel
Red Hot Riding Hood
The Wolf
and others

Out of the four you listed, I guess I would have to say Chuck Jones. The thing is, all of them were prolific in their own way. And I'd almost be tempted to actually say Friz.

You're right, Tex did some amazing things at MGM, especially Droopy. But lest we forget, he's also the man who created Bugs and Daffy. That in it's own right is amazing.

Also, I don't think Mel Blanc gets enough credit or recognition from people these days. The man did almost all the great WB cartoon voices (and also originally voiced Woody Woodpecker, something not many people know). Not to mention the fact that he did those voices for SO many decades. What an awesome guy.

I do love Chuck Jones. I love that you posted this question on here!

I think if this were a PS360 fan forum, 90% of the people there would have no idea who these people were.

Because their brains are fried from too much massive multiplayer haha.

I find it interesting that Chuck Jones is the most well-known out of the 4 main WB cartoon directors, despite the fact that Friz Freleng was there the longest.

McKimson seemed to be the loner of the group, not many people appreciate his work. He created Taz and Foghorn Leghorn, you know.

FUN FACT: Bob Clampett created Tweety; one of the first Tweety cartoons was "Birdy and the Beast", directed by Clampett.
Friz Freleng eventually paired Tweety up with Sylvester, and thus began the popular cat vs yellow canary feud that we all love. :)

I do love those. However, the problem I have with Tweety/Sylvester, Road Runner/Wile E. Coyote, and Speedy Gonzales cartoons, is that they were, by and large, interchangeable.

What I really liked about the Bugs, Daffy, and Porky cartoons, were that while they sometimes did re-use a gag idea or three, they were also often varied and different. For example, the few cartoons with Porky and Sylvester were great, because instead of Tweety always fighting off the cat, you got to see Sylvester act more as a house cat with a master, which was funny.

Good topic though man. I'm very impressed, and glad, that someone else besides myself is a student of animation. That isn't to say that I draw myself, mind you. I'm a writer. But, I do love film history in general, and animation history as well.

Guys like Friz Freleng, Tex Avery, Chuck Jones, Walt Disney, Hannah & Barbera, those guys are all very well known, and for good reason.

But it's too bad that most people have no idea who Bob Clampett, or McKimson, or Ub Iwerks, or Max Fleischer, etc., even were.

Me personally man, I love classic stuff. I'm only 28, but still, while I love a lot of new stuff that comes out, there is something that has definitely been lost over the years, in Hollywood. I will always prefer classic films to modern ones, if nothing else because it seems like they just had more feeling and imagination to them. Not to mention in a lot of cases, better acting and better writing. Just the same as I will forever prefer traditional animation, to CG animation. It just has more life, more character, more "magic" to it. At least to me.

It makes me sad that someday so many of these cinematic treasures might be lost, and forgotten.

Will Hanna & Joseph Barbera made the best Tom & Jerry cartoons. Chuck Jones versions were so boring and uninspired.

That's what I meant by saying Chuck Jones was hit or miss, his best work was done at WB throughout the 1940s and 1950s. Same with Friz Freleng.

Jones' and Freleng's post-Warners work just seems so uninspired, as if they lost their creativity. And don't get me started on the Depatie-Freleng era... *shudders*

Oh I don't know dude. I agree with you on Jones' Tom & Jerry cartoons. Not that great to me either. But I always thought his two Raggedy Ann and Andy TV specials were awesome.

And as for DePatie-Freleng, well, the TV cartoons they made, for the most part, you're right, weren't that good. But the Pink Panther shorts are pure brilliance. And that company did also produce the Dr. Seuss cartoon adaptations (as a matter of fact, Jones did a couple of those too). That alone is worth commendation.

True true, How The Grinch Stole Christmas is one of my favorite Chuck Jones cartoons.

I'm just not a fan of the poor production quality of the 1960s Depatie-Freleng and Hanna-Barbara cartoons. I did like The Flintstones and the early Scooby Doo cartoons, but the limited animation just looks rushed and cheap.

The mid-1960s through the mid-1980s were a low point in the animation industry. Yes there were a few gems, but for the most part it was all crap. Most cartoons during this time consisted of bland stories, terrible animation, and "trying too hard to be funny" gags.

...That is until 1988 when Who Framed Roger Rabbit came out and revolutionized the entire industry.

Yeah, there is absolutely no comparison between 1940s-50s Tom & Jerry and the stuff Chuck Jones did. His T&J cartoons are ok, especially compared to the godawful Deitch cartoons that preceded Jones, but nothing tops the originals.
