That's awesome, except ..............it's only 70 years or so later, and Aang is dead? In fact, if this girl is the new Avatar, and she's already like a teenager, then that means Aang died some decade and a half or so earlier than this show takes place. I'm just wondering, what happened to Aang? There are plenty of fairly old as hell characters in the original show (like King Bumi, over 100), and I guess I always just thought that Avatars in general probably lived a long time. *shrugs*

Oh well, it IS being made by the original guys, so I guess I'll have to trust that they won't f**k it up. Although, I do kind of hope that it only has three or so seasons, like the original. If they make it longer than that, it might seriously feel like it's just being dragged out. I liked the fact that the original Avatar series had a definite end, and only three seasons. It felt more complete that way. Not really much "filler".

However, The Last Airbender wasn't/isn't "anime". That is, specifically, a term referring to Japanese animation. In other words, any cartoon that comes out of Japan, technically, is anime. I know the word has come to mean more "mature", usually action based shows, but that's not necessarily true. Avatar was made to look like an anime, but it's American made, so it's technically not.

On a related note, as a huge fan of the original Fullmetal Alchemist series, while I guess in a way it's cool that they're having this new series that is closer to the manga, at the same time it also feels rather redundant. I kind of wish that they had just made a second series that follows up on the story from the first anime. You know, follow Ed and Al while they adventure around "our world", trying to find a way to get back to Amestris, and back to Winry (one of the things that really sucked about the ending movie, though it was otherwise good). That way, they could have even had the same original kid do Al, since he would be older, and so it would be okay for him to sound older. But oh well, I guess.

For that matter, it would be cool for them to do another Vampire Hunter D film. There are about 18 original stories after all.

I think this is awesome news. Reminds me of The Legend of Zelda in a way, how OoT Link is dead but is still around in spirit in TP. I imagine Aang will make quite a few appearances.

And just because Aang is dead does not mean the other characters are. From the sounds of it, Aang probably did not die of natural causes.
Very interesting.

lol "redundant" Are you only 15 episodes in or something?

On-topic: This is some good stuff. I hope they don't shorten it like they did the first series.

I don't think people relate the word "anime" to more mature titles. (I never called the Spawn animated series anime, and no one else has ever done that either.) I think anime is reference for a lot of people to a specific style of animation. It's easy to tell anime apart from other styles of animation.

Anime refers to japanese animation, period. Avatar is an example of anime-influenced western animation. Just to clear up the nomenclature.

Yeah the redundancy ends very quickly, if you've watched past wherever they diverge, I'm not sure what you're talking about.

Sounds amazing! But I wonder how long they can keep the show interesting when she only needs to learn Airbending when the show starts... Oh well, I trust them 100%! The Last Airbender series is possibly my favorite show of all time. Can't wait for this to start!!!

Also, arguing over whether or not something is an anime is pretty stupid. Yeah, it's not from Japan so it technically isn't an "anime". But it uses the same art style and is inspired by it, so is it REALLY a crime to call it an anime? I don't think so. And you shouldn't either, unless you're a giant weeaboo.

I just like the original anime series better. Sure, it's nice for the manga fans that this series sticks closer to it, but me personally, I would have rather had a sequel series to the original anime. This series just seems unnecessary, considering how great the first series already was.

Errr, the actual unnecessary series is the first one, since they most likely would've made an anime based solely on the manga sooner or later, anyway. And a sequel to the first series would be just as unnecessary. It ended that way for a reason.

You can say that all you want, but that doesn't make it absolutely true. The first series wasn't "unnecessary", it simply diverged from the source material (because the Manga was still being written), which a LOT of shows do, except the key difference here is, that the anime team actually came up with a compelling alternate story and "ending". Why else would so many people, like myself, have loved the show so much? As a MATTER of fact, even the manga creator said that she liked what they did, and thought it was "very creative".

I'm not a huge fan of anime. In fact, I think it's safe to say that most of it, I don't like at all, generally because of the same anime conventions that get kind of annoying. But FMA was different in a way that surprised me. Great voice acting (for once), great, fluid animation, amazing musical score, and an actual deep and understandable plotline. There is other anime I like, like the Miyazaki films (love them, as well as his older works, like Lupin the 3rd and Future Boy Conan), as well as the Vampire Hunter D films (which I wish they would make more of, there were 18 books after all). But FMA is hands down my favorite anime series. And I wasn't alone when this new series was announced in feeling like it felt a bit unnecessary, as I said, as well as wishing that they would just make a second show tying up the loose ends of the first. Or at least a second movie, if nothing else.

This new FMA may be good, but I've watched several episodes, and so far, it just doesn't resonate with me quite the way the first one did. Perhaps once I watch some of the later episodes, I'll like it more. But the first series was classic, and I already like, maybe even prefer, where they went with the storyline, so yes, to me, this second series does feel a tad bit unnecessary. If people wanted the manga story, well that's what the manga is there for.

probably will. Avatar did pretty good ratings wise. I just hope viacom/nick pull their heads out of the ass in regards to airing episodes. Season 3 of the original series was particularly bad with that, we had episodes airing in canada or the UK weeks before the US, so everyone here just got them off the internets. which hurt ratings in season 3.

ATTN Viacom: The internets don't stop at the US border.

I didn't say I didn't like it outright. I said I didn't really like it as much as the first, from what I've seen so far. And even so, I already really liked what they did with the original anime series storyline. So did most fans, apparently, otherwise it wouldn't have become so popular. And honestly, I haven't heard the amount of buzz and hype for this new show as I did the old one. So more accurate or not, if it's not "unnecessary", then at the very least it's an indulgence. You can't really top perfection, and the original series was already pretty much perfect.

Now we've straightened it out.

Now back to talking about this new Avatar show.

Oh yeah, this will definitely air on Nickelodeon AND Nicktoons Network. Avatar was a big hit. But yeah, they need to show the episodes either at the same time or within a few days of each other in the different regions. I got tired of waiting for season 3 to start in the US and just watched them as they came out online from the UK viewers. By the time the show came back on in the US, I'm pretty sure I had already gotten to The Day of Black Sun from watching online.

Saw this news earlier but still really excited. Avatar is one of my favorite cartoons/ animes ever, so I can't wait for this! I'm sure the creators know exactly what they are doing. I knew there would be a squeal/ another season after the ratings the finale got, but I had no idea it wouldn't be about the gang we know and love. Still really hyped though. :)
