Is this a good Virtual Console RPG? - Neutopia

Postby tendoboy1984 » 13 Aug 2010 21:47

I just uploaded 2000 Points to my account, and I want to get an RPG. What are some good recommendations?

The games I am considering are: Final Fantasy, Phantasy Star, Breath of Fire, etc.

EDIT:
I downloaded Neutopia and Neutopia 2 from the TurboGraphix16.

I have never played any TurboGraphix16 games, and according to the game description, Neutopia is similar to Zelda (it's an action/adventure RPG with puzzle elements and no XP).

Are the Neutopia games any good?

Want backwards-compatibility? Don't buy a PS4. ^_^

I have been trying to find a good RPG on the VC myself. I have personally been thinking about one of the Phantasy Star games.

It's not really an RPG. It's pretty much a direct rip-off of The Legend of Zelda, as is it's sequel Neutopia II. But they ARE both very good games, by Hudson Soft no less.

As for good RPGs on VC:

Breath of Fire II - Excellent game, though puzzling the first one, which is better, isn't on there. Stupid Capcom.

Final Fantasy - hard as hell, but still a great, classic game.

Super Mario RPG - Obviously, awesome.

Paper Mario - Ditto.

Ogre Battle, and Ogre Battle 64 - Both good, though hard, games.

Harvest Moon - Original game, still a classic, if you like farming.

Phantasy Star I-IV - A great, and overlooked rpg series, by Sega.

Secret of Mana - Another classic SNES Enix rpg. Or rather, action rpg.

Shining in the Darkness, Shining Force I & II - Another classic Genesis series, more of a tile based strategy rpg, similar to Fire Emblem.

Y's Book I & II - Another seriously overlooked rpg series, from the Turbo Graphx.

That ought to be enough to get you started.

Also, in this specific instance especially, Nintendo isn't the jerk. Squaresoft is. Their logic was/is, why release games like Chrono Trigger on VC, when we can remake, or re-release them for much more money on DS. Which is what they did. This SHOULD be on VC. But it's Square, not Nintendo's fault that it isn't.

Just saying.

@Devil_Rising

I started playing both games yesterday, and I agree that they are direct rip-offs of the classic 2D Zelda games.

What happened to this franchise? So many RPGs from the 90's just faded away. The one's that are still around are mainly big names:
Final Fantasy
Dragon Quest
Phantasy Star (it transformed into an MMO)
Fire Emblem (which was solely a Japanese franchise until recently)
Harvest Moon (not really a "big name" RPG)

Oh, and I also downloaded Kirby Super Star. I played the original on the Super Nintendo (I didn't own the game, I rented it). Man this gane is awesome! :)

Neutopia just kind of died out. It would be cool if they'd make a 3rd one, on WiiWare.

And you're right, a lot of the old series have just died out. Sega hasn't made a REAL Phantasy Star game since 4, to my knowledge. The Shining series isn't what it used to be. Y's has disappeared. Breath of Fire went WAY downhill after 2.

Oh well. At least there's stuff like Xenoblade and The Last Story coming out, eh? I sure wish Square would put something like The Four Warriors of Light on on Wii, instead of DS though. It would be much cooler, to me at least. I'm not a huge fan of the "Chibi" art style.

I kinda liked it. It kinda gives off a Legend of Zelda vibe, what with the scrolling style, and use of different items.
