Alright. Thoughts?

or
Go to your user control panel, click on Board Preferences, and change My Board Style to "prosilver Special Edition"

Now, I want to you look at this and give some well-thought out reactions to this. I don't want any "OMG IT SUCKS!!!!" after only clicking on that link for 5 seconds without trying anything.

btw, this follows up the earlier discussion where people could vote on "how ugly" people would be ok with the forums becoming if we switched to a more generic theme with the benefit of being able to keep the software updated.

so more generic theme = more updates/more secure site.

It should also be worth noting that with this newer... theme... there is a certain button at the bottom of all thread pages that activates a feature that has been requested for quite some time.... o:)

Hrm, for some reason the new style isn't showing up for me. I click the link and I get the regular forum layout. Most peculiar. . .

It's going to take some getting used to but I like it much better than the "other" options we had previously. Can't say that I like the body of the message on the left and the user info on the right though. I may edit this post later with more impressions.

Not really sure if this applies here but I'll ask it anyway: FOR THE LOVE OF PETE is there any way to disable the "Your post was submitted successfully" page?!? It's fine when I'm confirming an action ("Are you sure you want to ban <<insert name here>>) but when making a post: I CLICKED THE SUBMIT BUTTON - I know when I'm making a post. That has always annoyed me.

The purpose of having the post body on the left is so you'd focus more on the post content instead of who posted it. This has been HEAVILY debated and argued within the phpBB community if it's worth it ever since the inception of phpBB 3.0. There is a relatively easy way to swap the user column and post body, but I am leaving it up to cort if he wants to do that.

As far as removing the confirmation pages goes... I'll see if there's a quicky mod or hack. Like the left or right for post body debate, this too has been heavily discussed and argued.

I think it's pretty slick. I only have 2 problems with it though.

1- The opera banner consisting of 3/4 of the top of the boards.

2- View unanswered posts • View unread posts • View new posts • View active topics

I use these buttons a lot. For some reason, when you are viewing a topic, they are no longer at the top of the screen. I have to go back to Board Index to click any of these buttons.

It's going to take some getting used to, but this new theme definitely works for me. I'm liking the quick reply button, but the body of the text and user info switching is going to mess with my eyes for awhile.

I constantly make use of both 'View your posts | View new posts' links, both of them, but I can only see one of them(and being of a similar color and bunched with the other links, that one remaining link is a bit hard to see. I kind of like them where they are right now, and I'd prefer them offset on the new one as well if it was alright). I kind of liked the old header pic a bit better, but whatever is fine really...

It does make the forums look more "official", and if this means less work for you guys while still having more secure forums I'm all for it. The old forum theme will be missed and I'm sure some people will completely freak out over it, but I will get used to it over time as others will too.

heh... thanks for the comments so far.

keep in mind that one of the points of this exercise is to get a feel for how much people like or dislike the theme, which is essentially the same as a default installation of the forum software, in order to maintain a secure and updated software platform--but of course nothing is free; some sacrifices would be made as a trade-off. our custom theme has a ton of little tweaks that i personally made because i thought it would make things easier; more usable for people, and it seems many of you agree. any criticisms of features 'missing' or not in their correct places are going to be the same as i had when i created our custom theme in the first place.

on the flip side, there is a possibility for a sort of redux theme that is mostly like this default, but with a few select changes (like the view new/your posts, left/right columns, etc.). keep chiming in, and i'll see what i can do!

YEEAAHHHSSS! The 'View your posts' link made it so easy to follow the topics you were most interested in. That is the one feature I couldn't live without.

I'm also a little iffy on having the user info on the right hand side. I like the idea of placing more emphasis on posts rather than the people who posted them. However, having the avatars and such on the left help me differentiate between different posts (new tiny picture = new post) but I think this might be something I could get used to. And if not, having an option to switch columns would be awesome. :D

Overall, I think everything looks pretty good. There's a lot of new to get used to, but that is something time will take care of. All I need is my 'View your posts' link and I'll be happy.

EDIT: Oooh! I see the new 'View your posts' link! Thank you, cort!

Ok, cort went and added most of the requested links to this newer theme.

Also, ignore that fake Opera banner at the top of the page. It's mainly there to take up space for now.

Please put the time/date back on the top of the page. I'm envision it right-justified on the same line as where it says "Board Index<(current path)".

Will take a bit of getting used to, but definitely not bad. Threads look a little bit cluttered, but I think that might just be a case of unfamiliar positioning of everything.

Will the size limit of avatars and sigs be changed with this new update? It looks like there's more avatar and signature space.

we might be able to increase the dimensions allowed, but will maintain file size restrictions. nobody likes loading a page full of large images.

Other than the author pane being on the right, the table colors are clashing with this new theme. I was thinking the hex colors from this would work to match the shiny new banner here.

But I am excited because more updates are always good and over time could bring more new options to these forums.

EDIT - Also could this new banner also be a hint to a future main site update?

EDIT 2 - Ok, the example I mentioned isn't perfect, but hopefully it can generate ideas.

I like it, aside from the avatars/user info being on the right. I don't believe in the psychological "focus on the post content, less on who posted it" mumbo jumbo. Your eyes naturally glance to the right to see the poster's name anyhow. So to me, it's really just personal preference, and having the post in the left-hand column looks weird.

Thank God there's a "post reply" button at the TOP of threads now. The theme looks great overall.

i might go about pulling more of the blue out of the posts, because i'd rather have neutral tones throughout in case the banner area changes to something else. i don't see us using any of those external themes, but thanks for the idea anyway.

i think there's slightly more to the L/R debate than just the psychology of what content we're seeing and reading from left to right. from a UI/usability standpoint, most people use a mouse with their right hand, the scrollbars are on the right side of the window, so your cursor is likely to be on that side as well. the profile/user info are all clickable things, and potentially things people might click on more often than the text content in a post. notice the reply/quote buttons are also on the right side. it's a little jarring considering what we're all used to, but it does make sense.

also, i specifically removed the top reply button of our custom theme, golbez, to nudge people into at least seeing some of the discussion and the last post :-P

http://userstyles.org/styles/13645

I found something that moves the author pane of posts back to the left. Though one needs Firefox and the Stylish extension to make use of the style.

I edited the code to take effect only on gonintendo.com:
Spoiler:
Code: Select all
@namespace url(http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml);

@-moz-document domain(gonintendo.com) {
.postbody {float: right !important; border-left: 1px solid #fff!important; padding-left: 10px !important }
.postprofile {float: left !important; border-left: none !important ; width: 180px !important; margin-right: 0px !important; }
.online {background-position: 158px 0 !important; }
}

EDIT - Stylish is apparently available for Chrome too.
EDIT 2 - Edited code to fix the online tag positioning.
