How can we call this a videogame war?

Postby CAPTAIN N » 30 Oct 2005 10:22

I really don't think there is a videogame war anymore, you know why because nintendo is the only one trying to improve the videogame experience.

Sony is obbessed like reggie said in making sure you use there formats, memory stick duo, blu ray, umd says it all. Sony just want you us to be down with there format.

Microsft want us all to use there packages and operating systems, why they are scared of linux getting too popular, thats why.

Nintendo just does one thing and thats make great games, apart from the billion dollar pokemon franchise too lol

To me the war has changed, sony and microsoft are using gamers to favour there operating systems and formats of media.

Nintnedo just wants you to play great games, you do the maths.
The best idea wins

I don't really see it as a war anymore either. There is more than enough of a consumer-base to support 3 major consoles.

"What if this were a war? And what if tomorrow, the war could be over? Isn't that worth fighting for? Isn't that worth dying for?" -The Matrix: Reloaded

I thought that quote was fitting and I'll explain.

Nintendo feels, as well as I, that this machine can change the gaming industry. They want to save it again.

Enter in a new audience. An audience much like the one that entered with the NES. While they may be different or maybe even the same people, they can experience gaming the way it was meant to be experienced. Innovative and fun instead of just flashy. They can enjoy gaming.

If Nintendo's plan is unsuccesful, however unlikely that may be, they would not be as powerful of a company as they have been and are still today.

The gaming industry is starting to get very competitive. Nintendo doesn't attack the other companies head on. They go out and try to recruit people. Not the hardcore gamers. They already have them. They want the casual and the non-gamers.

Competing only hurts you. It takes swift action to get what you want. The Revolution will not fight in a war. It will end it by going after the source.

This is what Jack Thompson would call "Exhibit A".

Even if they did try that SONY would still be the most powerful force in gaming. Even if they don't try to move the industry forward.

i agree... wars like 'sega v nintendo' and 'coke v pepsi' aren't what they used to be. in fact, i don't even drink soda any more, thanks to both of them. if anything... it's 'sony v microsoft' not in a war of gaming, but of commercial ubiquity. i truly believe there's some truth to what captain n says, that those two are just using their consoles to grow their other technologies' roots into people's lifestyles and sell their other wares, rather than give half a twist about producing quality games or innovation of any kind.

outlandish tech specs are NOT an innovation, which is a concept, not a list of empirical data; and especially not a product everyone expects. interesting how people expect sony and microsoft to not be innovative by releasing 'this year's model' of console with a new bell or whistle. kinda like most cars actually!

SONY gets a small cut of money that each developer gets after SONY lets them use thier system. (I watched G4 and learnd that) Small little disk do not support a company.

I'm well aware. Nintendo gets money when they sell GCN, DS, GBA games, etc. Even if it is third-party. That's how the industry works.

ok, taken from January of this year from Gamespot.
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6117154.html?q=profit

"According to analysts with Reuters Estimates, Nintendo will post an operating profit of 120 billion yen ($1.16 billion) and a net profit of 74.2 billion yen ($720 million) at year's end."

6 months earlier in july from gamespot about sony:
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6103623.html?q=profit

"However, in the games sector, sales fell 15.9 percent to 105.4 billion yen ($943 million). Additionally, the division posted an operating loss of 2.9 billion yen ($26 million). Software sales increased but not by enough to offset the drop in hardware sales."

Another fact from a gamespot story 4 days ago on microsoft:
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6136713.html

"Not only was the Xbox's division the only part of the company to bring in less revenue than last year ($525 million compared to last year's $634 million), but it also increased its operating losses for the quarter from $138 million to $141 million. "

From a more recent story on SCE as a whole which includes more than the PS2 division also 4 days ago:
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6136682.html

" The idiom "you have to spend money to make money" holds true for SCE, as the company spent millions on marketing for the PSP and on research and development for the PlayStation 3, yet it still made a profit of 8.2 billion yen ($71 million). Last quarter it took a loss of 5.9 billion yen ($51 million). "

Recent Nintendo News from earlier this month, no clue why it comes up under madden:
http://www.gamespot.com/gamecube/sports/maddennfl2006/news.html?sid=6135317&q=nintendo

"However, just because Nintendo isn't making as much money doesn't mean it's not making money. Net income--aka profit--for the six-month period was 36 billion yen ($316 million), way above the 19 billion yen ($167 million) estimate in May but lower than the 46.4 billion yen ($407 million) a year earlier. "

Seems to me from this information, Nintendo is doing pretty god damn good compared to the others.

profits wise, not systems sold. Nintendo made the most money selling the gc while sony and ms sold their systems for less than they were making it. Sort of like their going to do with next gen systems
Call me at 1-800-bull@#$% when Sony knows how to make a system.
