DS Redesign Rumors

Whats better then one screen? Well two screens of course! Current-gen portables inside: DS, Lite, DSi, DSXL, 3DS...

DS Redesign Rumors

Postby blueger » 26 Jun 2007 00:24

A rumored DS Redesign announcement could take place at this years E3 according to Gamelabo(a Japanese game magazine). Nintendo has a long history of redesigning their systems. This redesign is said to feature larger screens and bigger buttons making it better suited for the "Touch Generations" crowd. I think that the bigger screen is cool but the bigger buttons might look a little weird. What are your thoughts. Will you be picking this up if it does in fact come out?

It makes some sense, as it would make the DS easier to operate for older folks with decaying eyesight and nimble fingers.

However, I don't see Nintendo convincing any current DS Lite owners of getting this newer model aimed at seniors, and seeing as how the whole principle of the DS is simplicity, it wouln't make sense to confuse customers with yet another model.

well for me they might not be able to improve on the ds lite however, for an elderly person bigger screens etc would be of benifit!

Now, somebody can correct me on this if I'm wrong, but wouldn't increasing the size of the screen while keeping the necessary resolution make the graphics look just that much worse?

I thinks so, it would create sort of a "stretched" effect. Unless new DS games will be made for both screen sizes.

that's my main concern too, I like my resolution to be nice and crisp.

also, the reason I finally got a lite is because it was so much more portable than the phat which I could barely stick in my pocket. It'd be nice if the new system was bigger in general, but could fold up to fit in your pocket somehow

Meh, I've been holding off trying to get the Lite. I stick with my Phat. My brother got a Lite, so I use it often. I'm just waiting on a redesign. But I dknow about this. Millions of people ahve bought the Lite. I don't think a DS like this would appeal to the people buying a new DS or the current owners. A 12 year old girl goes to the store and says "What is up with that DS? I want something sleeker like a Lite."

yeah, about that. I don't see why they would redesign the DS. Again.

It's already got the coolness of an iPod, and the functionality of an....well, a DS. so the Lite is more than enough to last a bunch of more years until the next generation of handhelds.
Wait, Raiden what in MGS4?

One would think so... But Nintendo just looooves to redesign their handhelds. The Gameboy Advance SP had 3 redesigns, that Is if you want to count the micro. So I don't see why the DS doesn't have enough left in it for just one more remake in Nintendo's eyes.

I'm not quite sure that would work out all that well, Why would they want to change what is already better then there expectations of the system?

The release of a new DS Lite package is pointless right now. But I'm still excited about the possibilities that are now out technology wise for the next generation of Nintendo DS.

The robustness of the chasis on the current model is too a very high standard. Mine is still good as new after all the knocks and drops.

Honestly a 3rd redesign would suprise me that much. I just think it maybe a little to early to jump to a 3rd design. Nintendo is still sell the Lites like crazy. Hopefully they add bigger screens. That's the only improvement I can see them making.

Now that this E3 has passed, Nintendo hasn't announced anything. I think they should just forget a new design and make a new handheld with more function and a "channel menu" system to tie in with the Wii. But it will only happen when sales of the DS Lite die down, and by the looks of things, that won't happen anytime soon.

Oh God, I hope they don't, because then I wouldn't have their latest DS design, and I'd need to spend money to remedy that!

Although I have to say, the DS Lite was definitely a necessary upgrade, and I'm glad I made the switch, although I think they've got it perfect now, so they don't need to make a new one.

Not to be whiny or anything...but the bottom right corner of the DS Lite hurts my hand after playing for a while, especially after some intense snaking in Mario Kart Wi-fi...:D. But these are really just minor flaws, and the DS Lite still continues to sell like crazy. So as of now I see no reason to make a new one.

The question is, if there was a new model released, would you be likely to purchase it?

That depends, It would have to be upgraded a lot for me to buy it. with some new features. But another redesign won't do it for me.

You most definately aren't "whiny" because the same thing happens to me. After playing for a long time (for the past week it has been Castlevania: PoR), the corner of the Lite would start digging into my hand. I would try to reposition my hand so it wouldn't hurt as much, but I always found myself going back to the original position. Other than that, I really like the DS Lite design. I got my Lite for my birthday in September and have really enjoyed it.

I guess every now and then during an intense session of difficult gaming your hands can get a little achy, but isn't this the case for every system?

:!:

They should put cushiony pads on the sides!

Theres definitly a market for that. Heck, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. I'm surprised no third parties came up with one of these by now.

It's strange; the idea seems so obvious, it's hard to believe nobody has done it before. Maybe they have, but I haven't seen it. Perhaps it has been tried, but for whatever reason(s) it's not a good idea after all.

Nintendo usually only redesigns one time.
But then again, they did do it 2 times with the GBA
