Is there a need for a new Gameboy Advance?

Postby CAPTAIN N » 24 Oct 2005 18:46

The gameboy micro has been launched and rememebr Nintendo still making GBA 2, do we need another handheld, will it be more like a psp device, big graphics and normal games?

Is the DS the future of handheld future.

Definitely. They will make a PSP like device at some point, however, I think they are smart enough to wait till they can figure out the battery life and load time issues that are killing the current PSP.

I owned the PSP for several months and it was an awesome movie player and the worst portable gaming device I ever owned. Long load times on a handheld are completely unacceptable.

I wouldn't mind seeing one in like 2-3 years. Any earlier would just cannibalize on the DS sales and make people unhappy. Hopefully by that point they are able to have some sort of large medium for storing games / other data (such as movies) that doesn't kill the battery life or cause excessive loading times. For now I'm more than happy with a DS.

I don't think Nintendo will be making a PSP device ever. Nintendo makes gaming machines, and the PSP is not a gaming machine. It's a "fool the public with 100 things our machine can do, and maybe they won't notice it does none of them well," machine.

DS is such a change in a great new direction, and i owuld much rather see the DS successor continue to innovate rather than another more powerful gameboy.

I heard that Nintendo planned on making a portable GameCube at one point. Probably why they used such small disks. I think it was called Project Nitro.

They will probably do a system with the power of the GameCube, however, I don't think it will be possible to use actual GameCube games. The discs would need to be streamed constantly during playback the same way they are on the actual GameCube. The battery life would be terrible. There is just no battery out there of any size that could last more than an hour with the drive constantly reading the disc.

DS is the way to go. I don't see much need for a new GBA, it would be one of those moving sideways, instead of forward, things.

While other companies love moving sideways, Nintendo is a forward thinking company.

I think the only purpose of a GBA2 would be to maintain a lower price point. That is to say, a price point around $50. Then the DS could occupy a slightly higher price point ($100), and the Revo could bring up the rear at $150. This way there are more options for people who don't have the money to buy more than one system. A lot of parents won't buy a young child a DS, but wouldn't mind dropping $50 on a GBA(2).

A PSP killer isn't needed because the DS is exactly that. If anything, Nintendo could choose to add media capability to a future iteration of the DS. I doubt that will happen because we all know Nintendo is more interested in making game hardware and software, and that's why they are scha-wing!

No DS2. It still has plenty of life in it.

A GB5 wouldn't be necessary either. The Advance has been around a while, but nothin needs improving per se. That's why when they release new ones now, they just fix screen problems and make it more portable.

Hrmm, I could see a market for a GBA2 that is like a PSP, but different in the following ways:

-Better battery life (probably through use of cartridges)
-As powerful or more powerful than the PSP
-Analog stick
-$150 price point
-Traditional control scheme

The GBA2 could be the source for great 3D games while the DS remains a great source of innovative 2D games.

The list of games coming to the GBA looks pretty weak. Either a new Game Boy is on the way, or Nintendo is putting all of their effort into the DS. I for one wouldn't mind having a new Game Boy system as long as it's not a retooled GBA. It needs to be a whole new system.

Yeah, even so I feel that right now, the DS is the logical successor.

Nintendo knows better than I do, though, so I feel the new GBA will be worthy. Though it's hard on the wallet, all these systems being out.

I think a new Game Boy could be a good idea. I have some (weird) friends that are frustrated and tired of touch screen games. (I know I know, weird) But maybe a new improved Game Boy will hit some of the gamers that refuse to appreciate innovation. Besides, How much space do the little DS cards hold? I'm sure it holds a lot because Mario 64 can fit on one of them. Well, maybe nintendo could make bigger games on a new Game Boy with a bigger Card. MAYBE EVEN SUPER MARIO 128!!!!...... I'm kidding.

the ds cards hold 1.1gigabits i think which is a hell of a lot of memory space for a handheld cartridge

By the way, 1.1 gigabits is approximately 137 MB. This is because 8 bits = 1 byte.

And despite what Nintendo said before they released the DS, I'm almost certain they won't announce a new GBA (or whathever you want to call it) at E3 this year. They were just saying that in case the DS flopped, which it didn't. They wouldn't want to piss off their market share by releasing a new system already.

What I think nintendo will do with the Game Boy line is make it tiny cute and trendy, and marketing it as such, (like the direction they're taking with the gbm now), which will distinguish it from the relatively bulky DS. The new Game Boy will also be much more conservative in it's controller layout and new features. It would also be relatively pick-up-and-play, something you'd play while waiting for the train or during commercials while watching tv.

The DS was NOT an experiment. It was a "third pillar".

It's directed at a different market than the GameBoy(while keeping in the gamers for both).

Of course there will be a new GameBoy. It's the most popular system series ever.

But Nintendo has never been in a rush to improve handheld technology because they know, as well as I do, that handheld gaming doesn't need good graphics. It just need good games that can be picked up and played at home or on the go.

First they had the GameBoy, then they added color while keeping the same graphics and everything, then they just made that smaller.

After that they finally improved the technology, or advanced it. Then added a backlight and eventually made it more compact.

Does anyone else see a pattern in the GameBoy line?

It's improve > perfect > compact > repeat.

So there will be a new GameBoy some day and it will be more powerful than the Advance.

One would assume that that will be part of the DS's make-over.

I'm also expecting more scratch resistant screens.

I reckon maybe in 2007 will get details of a new gameboy, if the ds sell reach about 20 million then we may have a longer wait.
