Yoshi or Yoshi?

Postby (Insert_Username_Here) » 18 Aug 2007 01:34

Ok the title may sound confusing, but im going to try and explain this as best I can....this is a debate that me and my cousin have had since weve played video games and I was wondering what everyone on the boards thought. I know my cousin calls Yoshi like "Yo" shee (long "O") (i know its horrible to try and get into words... :? ) However I've always called him "Yah" shee ( short "O") So how do you say it? (If this is as confusing as it sounds, Im sorry and will try to re-word it to sound better if you ask!....) :D

EDIT: I cant believe i got long and short vowels mixed up....

i've allways been acustom to saying Yo-shi.

I think thats how its normaly said, but when the character speaks it, it soundsa little diferent because of the high-pitched voice. Thats my interpritation anyways.

it's a japanese name, it's a long 'o', very simple. i think the original post got 'long' and 'short' confused. short o would be like 'box', long is in the word 'toast'. yoshi is with a long o.

i suppose some people also call him MY uh mott o. :: groan ::

I say it with a short "O", but mainly because that's the main way to pronounce it my language (Dutch).

I understand that the name is japanese, however in yoshi's story for the N64, yoshi always says Yoshi with a short o...

yeah... i haven't either, even in the games, and i HAVE heard the games, but still hear it as a long o, just not full on american pronunciation. i think some english-speaking people who are unfamiliar with japanese pronunciations are mistakenly hearing a short 'o', when in fact it's really just the long 'o' vowel syllable spoken quickly in yoshi's voice.

Hmmm... well i've found a way to help my side of the debate even more!!! in this video which is up on the site, you can hear the announcer keep saying Yoshi (short "O") and the announcer even sounds Japanese/Shinese! Just take a listen to what he says...heres the link to the vid....

http://www.gametrailers.com/player/24099.html

After listening to it one more time, at the very first time he says yoshi it sounds like he says it with a Long "O", but through the rest o;f the video, it sounds like a short "O"

first off, it's a long-o every time as far as i can hear. second, that's not a very good reference, since it's in german, and i'm guessing you're not german, so therefore can't vouch for the japanese-german-english chain of accent translation :-P
