Hello lo lo podcast crew! Got a question for you that'll require a bit of setup.
At E3 (2011), Reggie Fils-Aime illustrated the consumers' thoughts toward innovation with this statement:
Look, we here you. You want what you've always wanted, but you also want something new. You want to play things and things to look like they always have, but you want the buzz of the new. You want comfortable and surprise.
Innovation is a tool necessary to move the industry forward, but I've noticed that many producers and designers are having trouble keeping their current properties feeling fresh.
I feel that the innovations that best keep a franchise fresh are those that can be described by the consumer as "Things that I never knew I had wanted." These can be innovations or tweaks that the player never sees coming but are very easily accepted.
So my question to you, podcastian crew, is this: What are some innovations or tweaks in games that you'd describe as "Things that you never knew you had wanted" or "Things that you'd never expect to enjoy"? I couple of things that I never expected to enjoy were the Spinner item from Twilight Princess, or the ability to back out of a dozen menus in Pokemon Black and White with the touch of a single icon.
