Would you pay for Wii online?

Talk about online services such as WiiWare, the eShop, Virtual Console, etc., or about online-enabled games.

If it meant better service and more focus on multiplayer online games, would you pay for online?

Would you pay for Wii online?

Postby aighead » 13 Sep 2007 02:25

I saw a post similar to this from back in 2005, but this is going to differ a bit, so I hope it doesn't cause any problems...

We've now seen the Wii come to light. There are, currently, only a few titles that have online modes and several more coming out, but, likely, not as many as a lot of us would like. Considering that fact and that I've read several interviews with developers that say that their games would not be online because they do not think that is the direction that the Wii is going right now, even though us diehards say "uh, yeah, it is..." would it be worth it to you to pay for online? With that payment would come: superior online modes for any developer that wanted it, better support via Nintendos servers and less lag, and perhaps a better friend code system.

Granted, I understand that Wii is really just now trying to get off the ground. I also understand that the Wii probably had the biggest hype (positive or negative) of any console ever, due to folks learning about it online. That being said, I'm pretty dissappointed that there is not more online focus, this being the Age of the Internet and all.

So the question boils down to if it meant better service and more focus on multiplayer online games, would you pay for online?

Thanks for your input!

not sure how i feel about paying for online multiplayer..
paying for internet should be enough... thats why i dont play MMORPGs because i dont want to pay around 20 bucks a month on top of my DSL. So if it was a small fee... like 10-20 bucks a YEAR! then i wouldnt care too much.

I'm already paying for Xbox Live, so I really don't mind. If it's real good then I'm all for it!

If it's good I'd go for it.

i think there should be a pricing system similar to XBL in that there is a basic connectivity for free... intended for casual experiences, updates, downloads, etc. but for hardcore gamers looking for 'superior' online experiences and more featured service, a small fee is appropriate.

i think XBL is vastly overpriced, especially since users are already bringing their own connectivity, and many things played online are things you have to purchase anyway, so a premium fee is sort of double-dipping in my opinion. even if it were about half its current cost, it would be a much greater value.

but then, hardcore gamers have never been ones to shy away from splurging vast amounts of cash to reap the best experiences possible... i guess bottom line: sure, a small fee for wii online service would be fine, so long as a basic, free connectivity was available for those not looking to frag strangers.

I would definitely pay for a GOOD Wii online service similar to XBox Live. Just as long as they lose the friend codes, which is the most annoying part for me.
I've had enough of entering long codes just to play friends online.

I've been saying for a long time that Nintendo should do what Microsoft has done with Live and offer different plans depending on the needs of the individual, but as this generation wears on, that possibility is growing woefully slim.

I don't care either way. I don't want to play online. I would much rather have LAN so I know who I am facing. I would like to see something like the playstation HOME so you can talk to friends who are online, but that is about it.

In all the online games I have played, either-

1. I suck (compared with people on the interrnetzz)
2. I am the only one not cheating (MK-DS and Starcraft)
3. It is boring and takes too long to do what you need to do (WoW)

But I have never played online on an Xbox, so I guess I am missing out?

cort and blueger, I feel pretty much the same. It had better be good and I'd prefer less expensive than the premium XBOX Live... And good point about double dipping.

If I have to pay just to get basic online functions like chat, then most definetly NOT! They need to first make THIS online to it's full potential before they make pay for online.

Hmmm...good point. I don't think I'd pay for an online service without chat.
If Nintendo just oblately ripped off XBox live, I wouldn't care since it would be a good thing for us.

kittykatz5k- My thought is that by paying for service we can almost demand it be better and more comprehensive.

Why XBox LIVE is a rip off:

I can play games like Starcraft and Battlefield 2142 for FREE on the PC.

I don't care how many features they throw into it. I paid $50-60 for a game. I will be damned if I pay more to play it online.

I don't need to pay to do that, I rally support raids for chat all the time, it's just something that NEEDS to happen. Nintenod will get enough money from selling simplistic headphones anyways at like a rip off price of $30.

one other thought about the price... nintendo already has something they sell a yearly subscription to...Nintendo Power! why not bundle them together for a dandy package. if not for the online, do it for the monthly game posters!! ;)

i'd happily spend 25$ or so per year for the mag and a value-added online experience.

Im not sure what i would do. I just got a Elite not to long ago and im thinking about getting live with it. If Wii goes down that path i couldnt afford them both. I would only pay if it were worth it, just having basic online for the wii and charging you for it dosent seam right.

if i was to pay for online on the wii it would have to be mighty good! i dont think nintendo would go down that route as it could cut out some potential gamers who wouldnt be satisfied with a cut down free version but couldnt afford the charges online...

well, i pay for xbox live which is 50 bucks a year, so if i were to get close to an experience like that, then i would shell out 30 bucks probably for it. but having online for free aint bad. i just hope they can just implement a better ranking system for more games.

It's funny how PC devs can offer free online play to millions of people and the console makers who probably make twice the cash can't seem to do it.. doesn't really make sense when you think about it. Bnet is a great example of how online should be done on all games, you connect to the service and you search for a game, it's so simple and convenient.

I think for what is offered from the Wii wi-fi, i would defiantly not pay for it.
Slow, Clunky and not much to it so far.
Right now, i don't even use it while it is free. I just cant stand how it takes so long for the news/weather/shop to load up. It drives me nuts.

Most definitely. If the Wii could accomplish the quality you get out of XBox Live, I would totally pay for a service.
