Zidane's Poll of the Week #311

Postby Zidane » 07 Nov 2011 02:49

I'm hoping that soon enough Nintendo will go all digital for their video games. They would cost less and they could save a lot of money from doing son. I know not everyone in the world has high speed internet, but eventually they need to realize that it'd probably be easier to do so.

Plus, I've never met a Nintendo fan who didn't have high speed internet. Just saying....

I think it's probably bound to happen one day in the distant future. I don't want it to ever happen because I collect games. I like the idea of actually owning a physical copy of a game. It's mine forever and I can do with it what I please.

I'm a slave to materialism, so I like the idea of owning physical games, and I like building nice little game collections. Not to the point where I'll dismiss downloads if they offer a better deal. Unfortunately at the moment, my internet really struggles downloading massive files (especially considering games are pushing 20GB or more nowadays). It's not slow, but with 6 or 7 devices all connected at once it drops signals every now and again, which usually gives me some kind of error message. Combine that with not wanting to keep a system turned on for all of the hours of a day and digital distribution is still just not convenient enough.

Not when there's three game shops within ten minutes walk of where I live, and Amazon, which despite a few days delay, sells most things cheaper than they would be on download stores. Plus there's the fact I can borrow/ lend physical games around amongst my friends. So I don't think there's much need to abandon physical games yet. Not for a long while.

In fact I think physical games will exist in a similar position to CDs. They might not sell as much as downloads any more, but they're still with us. And it looks like they will be for years. So for games, we might have digital distribution as the norm in future, but physical copies could still hang around indefinitely.

No, I don't think Nintendo will ever go to digital only. I think they will offer you the choice one day. For example, buy the retail game for $50 or download it for $30 (for consoles). Some people like physical copies and even more people cannot download such large games or anything for that matter. Believe it or not, there are still people with dial up or with no internet at all out there.

I do think Nintendo will go all digital one day, but it will depend on the state of technology and when technology will get Nintendo to the point they can switch to a digital distribution model for games. Right now the ingredients just aren't there yet for Nintendo to go all digital.

I think at some point Nintendo will go all digital with their games, but I don't really want Nintendo, or the entire industry for that manner, to do so. There's something about having a physical copy of your game which I love and don't want to have to give up. I do think that Nintendo will be the last to adopt, seeing as how they're pretty old-fashioned.

I 100% think it will happen, purely because it is the logical step for the future. Although I doubt Nintendo will do it first, if anything, they'll be the last to do it xD

I'm not entirely sure- I think there's a good chance it could happen, but they could very well stick to releasing physical copies of games. I think the route they'll go is an enhanced version of their current model-they'll release entries into their big, famous franchises physically, but go digital for lesser or more experimental titles.
