Massive traffic spike for GoNintendo...

Postby McCanny » 05 Jan 2012 08:13

Long time lurker here. I was looking on Quantcast the other day and noticed this:

What the hell happened in early November to send traffic from a normal ~15,000 people per day to an insane ~250,000 per day? For the month of December, GoNintendo ranks as the 291st biggest site in the world!!

The only site I know that can send that kind of traffic is Google, is GoNintendo ranking high for some random keyword or something? Either way congratulations and welcome to all the new members.

Two words: Winter Break
Either that or someone's been trying to DDoS the server for a month or a bunch of bots are just hitting the pages.

My guess is the latter. Either way I'm expecting traffic to return to normal sometime this month.

You must get site stats so you should be able to see where they are coming from? For each one to count as a unique on Quantcast that suggests that they are genuine users and not bots? Also, the annoucement on the homepage suggests that it is human visitors.

Looking at the MRC Accredited Report it looks like the number of non-human requests are very low - http://www.quantcast.com/gonintendo.com ... BAL#report

i don't know about that chart; it doesn't appear to have a very accurate average number of visitors per day. i look at our actual, detailed traffic report frequently, and while we did get some pretty amazing traffic boosts last month, all the numbers listed in the OP are different.

and unfortunately i am not going to share out the correct numbers here.

but i'm also curious what happened.

I don't know. To me the numbers just don't add up.

Well the data is gathered from a tracking pixel which is presumably placed on this site by yourselves so it should match up with whatever your internal data is seeing?

It looks like you have Google Analytics running on the site - check the "traffic sources" tab on there and it should show where all those extra visits are coming from?
