I suggest you do some research on both SOPA and PROTECT IP (PIPA)

I just watched the video about PIPA and if the ESA wants both SOPA and PIPA passed in to law then holy s**t it's like they want to put small business who use the internet to sell hobby items out of business un-freaking believable

in a perfect world this bill would be fine and i feel like that is where a lot of people are seeing this from. the "oh it will stop piracy, isnt that grand" effect is in play causing uneducated people (or people overly angry about piracy *coughESAcough*) to think that it will actually help but the way it is written is just a mess of horrible horribleness :/

it would mean that if you posted any link to anything that anyone could claim copyright on, they could de facto shut you down with no due process.

and essentially the site owners would become responsible for everything their users posted. Now, imagine a site like this. maybe a few hundred active posters. could you manage everything they posted to make sure they didn't link to a screenshot or anything?

now imagine a site like reddit or youtube, with hundreds of thousands to millions of active posters.

they messed up by having a server in the US. the aim of SOPA is not piracy prevention, it's control of the internet by the USgovernment and the corporate interests who bribes them.

dropping their support after the bills are functionally dead is a coward's move. and doesn't really count as dropping support. it's like when the little toadie of the big bad guy switches sides cause he sees his boss is hurt. you can't trust that shovel bag.

It's not going to be that easy. Now we have the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) and the Protecting Children from Internet Pornographers Act (PCIP), both of which are probably worse than SOPA and PIPA.

PCIP might not sound bad, right? After all, Child Pornography is a bad thing! We need to do something to stop it, right? Well, that something probably shouldn't include making ISPs keep track of your online activities and report them to the government. A Californa Rep. humorously presented an amendment to rename it "Keep Every American's Digital Data for Submission to the Federal Government Without a Warrant Act."

As for ACTA, it's an international agreement that similar to SOPA. It would empower international borders to legally conduct searches of laptops, MP3 players and cell phones for illegally downloaded music and movies. Travelers with infringing content would be subject to a fine, and their devices could potentially be confiscated or destroyed.
