What is Retro up to?

Postby coffeewithchess » 07 Mar 2008 18:12

After I beat Metroid Prime 3(just two weeks ago), I wanted to know more about Retro Studios. I visited their site and noticed how it seemed really outdated. I know there are rumors of another Metroid in the works, but considering that the Metroid Prime games have been the only games developed by Retro, I've got to wonder if they have other projects they would like to work on. Anybody from Retro reading this can make a very vague response! Thanks! Also, in MP3, people say their may be a clue for another Metroid game...Darkness? Is this clue on Valhalla?

EDIT: On a side question, I'm playing MP3 on Hyper Mode right now. I started wondering on Veteran, what are the Ship Missile Expansions for???? I must be missing something...

The clue to the next Metroid game was called "Metroid Dread", and yes it is a real scan that can be found. Metroid Dread was once on a software list from Nintendo a long time ago but was quickly taken off. Nothing has been heard of it since... Its supposed to be another 2D Metroid game for the DS, following Fusion in the storyline.

The only problem is that shortly after that scan was found by IGN, they called Nintendo and they said that no new Metroid game is currently in the works. Either Nintendo is just being very tight lipped, or Retro was just cruelly playing with us.

But from what I know, Retro wasnt even making Dread. And in an interview I read with Retro, they said they would be taking a break from Metroid... which probably means they will make a new game (hopefully a new Nintendo IP) and then making another Metroid.

Yea, I just found it interesting that Retro was founded in 1998 and Metroid was the first game ever developed by them. It seems like the Retro relationship is like the Rare relationship Nintendo had, not really sure.

I'd love for them to be working on multiplayer-heavy FPS. Whether or not that happens to be Metroid is irrelevant. I just want a cool online shooter from Retro.

Also, while Miyamoto and his team start on the next Zelda, I wouldn't mind Nintendo handing over a Ganondorf spin-off title to Retro. People have been wanting a Ganondorf game for awhile, and I can't imagine Nintendo handing the reigns of the main series over to Retro. One thing Retro has proven, aside from being able to make good Metroid games, is that they like going the first-person action/adventure route. So why not take Ganondorf, and stick him in an Oblivion-esque adventure game? The only thing they'd have to be careful on, and I'm sure Miyamoto could help with, is the story. I think it'd have to be a pre-TLoZ Ganondorf, and it would have to work with the timeline(s) established by Miyamoto (which only he and a few other people actually know about).

I'm really surprised Nintendo hasn't attempted an FPS online, YET. After playing MP3, I would like to see those type of graphics in a Wii game with great online play. I think that MOH:H2 is definitely the right direction for FPS's on the Wii from what I've read(being that I haven't played it yet).

Here's hoping! I just wonder why Nintendo wouldn't do this, knowing that games like Halo and especially COD4 are doing so well.

Weren't they developing a game that got shoved aside after they started on Metroid Prime? I hope they follow through with that idea.

It was a action RPG called Raven Blade
It sounds like it could be a cool Wii game.

But I would much rather them make an online FPS in the vain of UT3.

I would also like an FPS...as long as they keep out the escort missions. Why FPS games have those when they're so frustrating is puzzling.

But yeah, if they could make something Perfect Dark for the N64 level, I would love it. Granted, that is a high level, but I'm just being idealistic.

I don't know what I would prefer Retro to do. It would be nice for them to work on an original IP, but who knows. I'm sure whatever they end up doing it'll be, at the very least, decent.

The rumors right now is that Retro Studios are working on an action-RPG with fast thinking combat situation and you are a magician (main character) and you are controlling 2 others caracters with the nunchuck only ! Kind of like a small Deus Ex game but less complicated !

I'm all for anything Deus Ex like...but I wish it was as complicated. Oh well, I'm sure it'll be cool if that's what it is.

Not believing unless you give me a source to this "rumor".

I hope its a new IP. Not that I'd be sad to see another Metroid game though! I just want something brand new from them. I suppose whatever the case the next Retro game will at least be pretty...

Metroid dread still sounds like a possibility. I hope they do that, even though I like the Prime games better that the 2-d games.

^ If I'm not mistaken Dread was listed on Nintendo's release list a while ago - before it was removed. Nintendo are denying its existence but you never know, shock announcement at E3?

Retro is NOT making another Metroid game. Nintendo and Retro have both made it clear that Retro Studios' liscense with Metroid was for three games from the start. They've made three Metroid games and are now working on something else. Of course, they're being quiet about it. A first person shooter would be awesome, and I could see it happening. They decided to take multiplayer out of Metroid Prime 3, which means that they were at one point in time they were working on a multiplayer mode for Metroid Prime 3, but perhaps now they're using this multiplayer first person shooter idea in a new game, likely to have wi-fi, if such a game exists.
On the other hand I could see them making something completely different. Look at Zoonami. That's a company made by the guy that came up with Goldeneye (n64) and now he's making puzzle games and such. So, if they choose to not make a first person shooter, it could be anything. And since they're affiliated with Nintendo, I suppose it's possible that they could be making a game in any of Nintendo's franchises. So what's Retro up to? Could be anything.
As for Metroid: Dread if it's going to be a 2D Metroid game, it's likely to be made by the same staff that made Super Metroid, Zero Mission and Fusion.

Retro Studios signed a three year contract with Nintendo, but just like in sports; contracts can be extended. Retro says they are, "taking a break from the [Metroid Prime] title." http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3162445There never was any multiplayer for MP:3. They, "considered it" but did not follow through.

I didn't say they would never make a Metroid Prime title again, I just said that they are not making one, as in they are not right now. And, okay, so they "considered it," but you think they didn't work on it at all? Not even in the planning development or anything? I was just saying that whatever it was that they were "considering" for the multiplayer may be used in a new game, but if you think that's b.s. that's fine.
