That's a terrible comparison. Pokémon are ANIMALS AND/OR PLANTS. They are supposed to be based of off living, breathing organisms which is why garbage bags and ice cream cones are stupid. Not only were those designs stupid, but they were just ugly (i.e. badly designed). The creatures in Earthbound are based on ALL KINDS OF OBJECTS. It's a FANTASY game hence the FANTASY characters. And yes, it was nonsensical, but it's also original and creative. Consider that the game was released in the '90s along with a crapload of other JRPGs, and you'll see that it was a fresh of breath air. Aesthetically pleasing in just about every way.
Also, saying something IS NOT GOOD!!1 and expecting to be taken seriously requires an explanation. One that is built on OBJECTIVE data. "HURR DURR GAEMPLAY SUCKS 2 RANDUM ME NO UNERSTAND!1" just makes you look like a complete and utter moron.
