Why isn't this on 3DS, you ask?

Gamefreak eats, lives, and sleeps on its laurels, that's why (to be fair it's a much smarter business decision, though Nintendo certainly could turn out a 3DS-selling Pokemon game... if it weren't for the fact I just stated)

Not expecting much

Please surprise me Gamefreak, I've been buying your games for years but I'd really like to be genuinely excited for another one of your games again. A better looking game engine or battle engine would be a nice start, since it's a sequel I don't expect too many gameplay changes but that's cool.

All I know is that if the next Pokemon game, like the inevitable RSE remake, is on the DS rather than the 3DS, then I'm completely done with Pokemon

Also, I hate that legendary on the movie poster. It's like they combined all the cuteness of Mew with all the crappy fan design of some 15 year old's Deviantart account

This sounds great and all but why the DS? I don't want to go back and play DS games, I want to play new games on newer hardware.

we are asking because the 3DS has been out for a year, and by the time this comes out here (if it even does) it will be even older. white looks HORRIBLE on 3DS. i mean, fuzzy AND pixle-ated?!?!? come on...

we are sad that we are going to have to wait YEARS for a true Pokemon game on 3DS.

The more I think about direct sequels the better I feel about it. Maybe Gamefreak will put in a feature that lets you transfer over your current B/W team, or you play as N.

Possibilities seem amazing.

Can we expect them to be like G/S/C were to R/B/Y, or are they just going to be Grey version 1 and Grey version 2? I'm really hoping they're real sequels. That would make this really exciting, but if they're just a third version split in two, then it will be really uncool.

I have a feeling that this is going to be more like a 3rd version but with 2 versions of that instead of just one.... Also, I am displeased that it's not on 3DS because of internet problems I have. My internet security is WPA, and DS games don't support WPA. Every time I switch it to WEP I have experience problems with my internet. I'm not looking forward to still having to find weird ways around this...I was hoping the 3rd (in this case 3rd and 4th) iterations would solve that by having it on the 3DS, but we'll see. Very smart move for Game Freak (assuming it gets the same momentum as the first 2)

god damn it, now I'm confused. Version 2 of B/W, ala Platinum except two of them? Or a sequel to B/W with 'Version' as part of the name (as if the originals were referred to as Black Version and White Version)?

I thought they wouldn't announce the next main game so soon because announcing an updated version of the existing two games would hinder their sales. But announcing a sequel would actually BOOST the sales of B/W!

a direct sequel would be pretty novel, but it's bizarre that they'd be releasing it for DS only. maybe they want to reuse the engine so that they can focus on an entirely new game for 3DS.

@mock turtle I actually like the 2 main legendary pokemon but I'm talking about the rest. One pokemon was literally a bag of trash. I don't dislike pokemon but I don't think having one new pokemon that I like/want is enough to get a new game.

See the beauty of releasing it on the DS is that 3DS users can also play it on the 3DS in 2D. So it's not only releasing on the DS, on the contrary, it is releasing in a format that can work on both. But I have stated what my problems with that are in a previous post.

Anyways, I've seen a couple posts that have said something along the lines of "DS only?" and that's why I brought attention to it. Sure there is no 3DS version, but having a DS version allows for both systems to play it, thus they are able to target people who haven't gotten a 3DS yet and people who have moved on from the DS and gotten a 3DS.

If these games are a sequel to B/W and not a rehash (perhaps even part of a trilogy as an earlier poster mentioned?!) then this is fantastic news.

More so because if this IS truly a sequel, then that means now and in the future there may be more time between generations. I know some will consider this a bad thing, but with 600+ Pokemon and new generations every 4ish (?) years, eventually there was going to be a point where it just became too much.

Pure speculation:
If this is indeed true, and the in game story is a duology or trilogy, and that trend continues in future generations, the amount of Pokemon will grow to insane proportions as a slower rate, AND the excitement for new generations will be even greater as their frequency will decrease while still allowing 'main' games to be released at a regular rate.

Also allows for more new ideas and the possibility of 'catching them all' within one generation. One thing I loved about B/W was that pre-Elite 4 the only Pokemon were new Pokemon. However for B/W 2 and 3 (?) other Pokemon can be made accessible earlier and areas from previous games can even be made available, hopefully even tying into the storyline. A story that involved past legendary Pokemon being tied to the storyline of the new games would not only be compelling, but would be great for nostalgia as well, especially with the ability to travel to past locations. (The possibilities for a good story spanning three releases is virtually endless, come to think of it. Thinking on the fly, one important implementation I think would be an easy way to transfer all Pokemon from version 1 to 2 and then 3.)

Of course the opposite argument could be made as well, that the constant flow of new pokemon keeps the series as popular as it is.

I'll admit, I like this better than "Gray". Gray would have been the same game I just played, plus a little more. Sounds like I'll at least get a new story with this one.

Still, would have preferred a sixth generation game on the 3DS. Oh well. I'll watch this and see if I want to devote any more time and money to Pokemon.

And Vader's right, this is Gamefreak not being as ambitious as they could be. Hopefully it's still good.

Yeah, my friend and I have a crazy theory about these games if they end up being direct sequels of Black and White. We think that the reason Zekrom has a presence in Black 2 instead of White 2 (and the same with Reshiram) is because you'll either play as N (who obtained that dragon in the first version) or as a new character that eventually associates with N. This could even mean a new region (since N flew to a "distant land" at the end of B/W). At any rate, without major changes to Unova, it's hard to see how this wouldn't just be a retread. And I seriously doubt you'll be playing as the protagonists from Black and White. That'd cause some serious oddities from a story perspective.
