Yeah, it really was, I see it enough to the point where it enrages me as an electronic music fan because "techno" is referring to something different. I wonder what warrants such a broad disdain for electronic music? While Brostep is something I really dislike, dubstep the likes of, say, Swarms or maybe even James Blake aren't bad, repetitive OR abrasive. For reference, this is what I consider true dubstep:

Woohoo! Hi-fives on And Justice for All, I'm a huge fan of that album, as well as Master of Puppets and The Black Album. As for the Beatles, I'll agree with The White Album, it's somewhere up there for me with Revolver. Like most people, I also prefer the latter section of their career, but there's some early Beatles albums that stand out as their best, namely Beatles for Sale.

Yeah, the "techno" generlization nonsense needs to stop. It's simple people talking out of their derrières with an extra dose of ignorance.

Anyway, I've been trying to get into stuff that's not classical/symphonic/orchestral/romantic/string/whatever you call it, so I'll refrain from posting the boring stuff that old people listen to. Here's a little of what I've listened to recently:

I really wouldn't say so. As a huge fan of rock and metal music, I don't mind nor care whatsoever if someone "mislabels" a band by simply calling it "rock". If someone calls Metallica "rock", I'm not gonna bother correcting them, because at the end of the day, it IS all "rock" music anyway. And as it is, there's just too many labels for music genres and sub-sub-sub-genres, it gets kind of silly. lol

I listen to lots of completely different kinds of music, my favorite would have to be rock or metal. I also love video game music and 80's music and 70's rock.

Some of my favorite bands are: anything with Mike Patton especially Faith No More, Mr. Bungle and Peeping Tom. Mindless Self Indulgence is also one of my favorite bands. System of a Down is also great. Tubring is excellent, if you haven't heard them you should check them out.
I also like White Zombie, NIN, Marilyn Manson (his older stuff), older Tool, old Misfits (with Glenn Danzig), Smashing Pumpkins, Red Hot Chili Peppers (mostly their old stuff), Alice In Chains, Bloodhound Gang, Spacehog, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Dog Fashion Disco, Guns N Roses, Alice Cooper, CCR, Ozzy, Black Sabbath, KISS, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, AC/DC, Queen, The Cars, Anthrax, The Dead Kennedys, The Sex Pistols, The Offspring, Tom Petty, I could keep going for a long time but I'll leave it at that.

As far as 80's music I love tons of it, but most of the bands only have like 1 to 3 songs I like. Some exceptions are Huey Lewis, The Cure, Peter Gabriel, Talking Heads, Billy Idol, Def Leppard, Genesis, and Phil Collins.

About the only rap I really like is Snoop Dogg.

I like a lot of music from movies, I love Danny Elfman and John Williams in particular. I also listen to theme songs from cartoons and anime sometimes.

I don't like most rap, any country, death metal (stuff like cradle of filth with lots of growling and screaming and stuff), pop music (Britney Spears, Justin Bieber...), gospel, dance music (like stuff you would hear at a rave or something).

I generally swing towards the rock music but have been known to turn up the radio when Daft Punk comes on

as for a top 5 list it would be

1. daft punk
2 def leppard
3 crush 40 [for right now]
4 lady gaga [poker face gaga not this new crap she has released]
5 any 80's performer depending on my mood
6 [special mention] Shania Twain got to love her

music I flat out hate would be any kind of country music [except shania because I consider her to be more rock then country] rap because in reality it's too stupid to understand also Kanye west is a bastard because he pretty much took all the credit for remixing Daft punk's Harder better faster stronger when Daft punk helped him and any type of new age pop that does not have an 80's sound a good example is that some of lady gaga's music sounds like Madonna's older work

^^I found Born This Way was a rather infectiously catchy album.

The thing is, calling all electronic music "techno" is akin to calling all rock music "hair metal." Daft Punk and Deadmau5 are not techno in the same way Metallica is not pop punk and The Beatles aren't death metal.

So I don't know what's a bigger deal for indie rock, Arcade Fire winning the Grammys or THIS:

I'm in the boat with Devil Rising. Metallica also happens to be my favorite band. And I don't mind it being called rock. I also dislike electronica/techno/dubstep/etc. (would generalizing it as electronica be better? Because, honestly, it all sounds the same to me, and I wouldn't be able to differentiate between the genres), but I can understand your passion for music, as I'm the same way. But, really, when someone says something like that, I usually just laugh at it because they're so wrong about it.

Most new music I don't like because it is all autotuned. I like the Beatles but they are way over hyped. I'm sick of every person saying everyone is an idiot if they don't like them. I mostly listen to John Williams Star Wars Music, Duel of Fates is the best, and System of a Down.

Outside of the radio's Top 40 that's not true at all.

I do agree with you on The Beatles though. I live in Liverpool at the moment, and this city still milks the hell out of them. It's ridiculous. Not knocking the band, but seriously they aren't the absolute pinnacle of all music.

Anyway I've been listening to Grime's album Visions lately, and I love it. Although like with my mini Cults-obsession last year, I might just be in love with the girl's voice.

Yeah, electronica is a much more accurate descriptor. But like I said, it's not the same as calling Metallica Rock. Metallica does fall under that umbrella because Rock is a super broad descriptor, while techno is not so, and most electronic music does not fall under that umbrella.

Steel Diver wrote:Most new music I don't like because it is all autotuned. I like the Beatles but they are way over hyped. Hahaha. Absolutely not. If you spent two seconds listening to something other than your Lady Gagas, Katy Perrys and Kanye Wests, you'd see that's not true at all. In fact, autotune is quite seldom used. I hate it when people generalize "new" music vs. "old" music. No matter what time period you look at, there is just as much good music and just as much bad music.

But I agree completely with what you say about the Beatles. I even like the Beatles, and they were influential to many artists, but they were hardly pivotal to the development of music because all they did was follow trends.

Yes, Visions was great! I don't like when her voice gets all chipmunk-y, but I did like that album overall.

Rock (and similar genres):
Chicago (60s/70s mainly)
The Beatles
Streetlight Manifesto
The Divine Comedy
Blood, Sweat & Tears
Eagles
Bread
The Doors
Boston

Plus a load of other oldies/Classic Rock and some modern bands. Aside from the Soft Rock there (which is kind of a nostalgic thing for me, even though I am only 23 lol) I am drawn toward music with more classical/jazz instrumentation (specifically woodwind/brass instruments) and I love jazz influence. That's why early Chicago is my favorite.

Classical Genres:
Debussy
Ravel
Tallis
Vivaldi
Mozart
Handel
Bach

This list, like the last is in order. So if you know those composers I'm drawn to the extremes of Impressionist and Renaissance. Although I also love some Baroque and Classical. They were what I originally got into.

LOTS of Daft Punk and OC ReMixes. And OSTs. And Film Scores.

Genre-wise, though, I'm especially big on all sorts of electronic music (don't really have a favorite sub-genre) and jazz.

Haha, aw man. I guess I'm going to be the odd man out in this topic, I guess. I guess I'll start out with my deep hatred for metal and country music, I mean, I just can't stand them. Dubstep is also another genre that I prefer not to listen to. I listen to rock every now and then, generally songs I hear from games like Guitar Hero or Rockband since rock music isn't really played on any major radio stations in the Metro-Detroit area. I enjoy R&B, Hip-Hop,Smooth Jazz, and some Rock.

I'll break my lists up into category:

Smooth Jazz:
Spyro Gyra
Kirk Whalum
Najee
Candy Dulfer
Marion Meadow
Norman Brown

Rock:
Evanescence
Three Days Grace
Coheed and Cambria

Hip Hop:
Curren$y
Earl Sweatshirt
Joey Bada$$
ASAP Rocky
Lupe Fiasco
Wiz Khalifa (pre-Kush and Orange Juice, of course. That mixtape was gold)
Slaughterhouse
J. Cole
Kendrick Lamar
Danny Brown
Asher Roth
Drake (yes, drake)
Los
Chuuwee

R&B:
Ne-Yo
Alicia Keys
Keyshia Cole
Goapele
Lloyd

EDIT: I don't know how I forgot to add Wu-Tang, more specifically Inspectah Deck, Method Man, Ghostface Killah, and ODB (R.I.P)

I don't listen to a lot of new or old-old music anymore, mostly sticking to game music and specific bands I've followed forever. I liked Modest Mouse a lot, but they always disappear after an album and nothing new forever.

My favorite music is just about anything from Mzrk Hoppus and Tom DeLonge. And while I grew up with blink-182 in their dick joke years, I think the 2003 album was way better, and the new album last year (Neighborhoods) blew me away like nobody's business. The best thing they've ever done and the bar is set too high now. Hahaha.

I also love Angels & Airwaves, though I think I-Empire was still my favorite album they did. LOVE (as a whole; Parts 1 and 2) is great, but the songs vary in quality and Part 2 kinda falls apart midway with songs that had good ideas or sounds but were more experimental thsn actually great/consistent in quality. But whatever.

I'd buy a blink/AvA/Boxcar/+44 Rock Band in a heartbeat because I'm stupid.
