Awfully busy today, and there wasn't even that much coming from GDC. Glad this day is over. I'm really in need of some shut-eye! See you all in a few, short hours.

Ah, it seems like it was just yesterday when we heard rumors of an add-on for the 3DS that would provide a second circle pad. That kind of talk seemed so silly this early on in the 3DS' lifespan. Then...the device actually showed up in an issue of Famitsu. The rumors were true, and the reaction was not good.

3DS owners were not happy that an accessory like this was being launched so soon after the 3DS itself hit shelves. It seems like a misstep on Nintendo's part. Why not just include a second circle pad on the 3DS to begin with? What sense does another accessory like this make within the first year of the system? How could Nintendo not add this circle pad to the system when developers were clearly interested?

While the rage burned quite hot for awhile there, things eventually calmed down. The device isn't necessary for any games out there (thus far), but it was an option for those that had some extra scratch and a desire to go dual circle pad with the games that support it. Not a necessary item, but a helpful addition for those interested in that style of play.

The Circle Pad has been available worldwide for a few weeks now. According to the reaction at GameStop, the device has been a success so far. Initial shipments sold out much faster than anticipated, and now we wait for the next batch to come in. Did you end up buying the device? Were you once a hater but have now changed your opinion? Are you still just as enraged as you were when the Circle Pad Pro was announced?

No, I have no desire to get one either. I think it's ugly and makes the system too big to be easily portable. I'm not enraged by it though, if people want one I couldn't care less, I just won't be getting one. I guess it's nice to at least have the option.

I still don't like it. It just shows how Nintendo doesn't think things through. They rushed the system to the market and didn't design it properly. Obviously the lack of a second stick is a problem but you also have the issue of the bottom screen leaving marks on the top screen. 3DS was not ready and I'm not too keen on paying $20 to get something that should have been there in the first place.

Nope. Better come bundled with Monster Hunter or I'm not wasting money on it.

Nope. Never had a problem with the 3DS controls.

Plus the thing is just plain ugly.

GoNintendo 'End of Day' thought - Did you buy a Circle Pad P

Postby WesFX » 08 Mar 2012 07:54

Was going to buy one after Metal Gear Solid 3D arrived, because my stubborn but loveable brother can't enjoy Resident Evil for it's usual controls.

Didn't find one. Didn't order one. RE:R nor MGS3D need it, and I'm not really done with RE to hand that over to him, so he doesn't need a CPP just yet.

GoNintendo 'End of Day' thought - Did you buy a Circle Pad P

Postby MoldyClay » 08 Mar 2012 07:58

I don't have a 3DS yet still, but I can guarantee I probably will not get the Circle Pad Pro.

I have no problem with it existing, it's better than releasing a new 3DS version in such a short time span, but $20 for what amounts to a 2nd, unnecessary stick that is only relevant for a few games is just not logical.

I imagine it's great, but not $20 great unless you really have some problem where you need a 2nd stick THAT bad.

To be quite honest, I had no problem playing Me & My Katamari on the PSP using just the buttons, when all the console ones use dual analog sticks, so I doubt I'll miss having a 2nd circle pad on the 3DS.

If a game comes bundled with one, and it isn't that much more expensive, then I'd be down, however.

GoNintendo 'End of Day' thought - Did you buy a Circle Pad P

Postby Frank » 08 Mar 2012 08:06

I got one since Zavvi had that offer to get RE:R with it included for less than the price of just the game from most other shops. I probably wouldn't have bothered otherwise as I got on ok without it for the demo, but having spent some time with it I really do think it makes the game play far better. I'd also argue that it made MGS slightly better (just played the demo), but I really didn't get on with that game all that much either with or without it so it's not saying much.

So yeah, not essential, but certainly worth it if you can get it for a decent price. I don't find the extra bulk a problem most of the time, since if I'm taking my 3DS anywhere with me, it'll be in a bag anyway.

Nintendo didn't rush the design, and there was no need or reason to include a dual analogue on the 3DS. The only reason they did it was because Capcom wanted it for Monster Hunter, and they made a perfect solution for it, for cheap.

I didn't get one because I couldn't be bothered to chase Gamestops for it - it should have been released normally in Amazon and in bundles. But I wouldn't have used it for RE: Revelations - I love the controls without it, and I probably don't need it for MGS either. I'm not a dual analogue person anyway. The Wii works great without it, and the gyroscope or touch would work better than a second stick too, although the 3D effect might not work best with gyro. I'm surprised at how good the face button control (and gyroscope for the aiming) works with Resident Evil Revelations, so this device might be just the dual analogue obsessiveness there, and I think Nintendo did perfectly here. The only bad thing is the exclusivity with Gamestop, like with Xenoblade. NA should stop with that nonsense. The rest they really thought through, despite irrational reactions.

GoNintendo 'End of Day' thought - Did you buy a Circle Pad P

Postby Maxram0 » 08 Mar 2012 09:00

I have one, I love it, it's light, sturdy and comfortable, makes the 3ds easier to hold, but it does make the face buttons not as quick to reach, in a game like resi, that matters a lot, but the additions of 2 more shoulder buttons are good! looking forward to the 3DS redesign which should incorporate the 2nd analogue stick and 2 additional shoulder buttons, there is no going back from this

GoNintendo 'End of Day' thought - Did you buy a Circle Pad P

Postby Maxram0 » 08 Mar 2012 09:04

@delpiero

resi was designed well to work without a 2nd circle pad, the addition does mean you can move as well as aim, but mostly for the extra shoulder buttons, and trust me when I say mgs3 NEEDS that 2nd circle pad, makes the gameplay much more fluid, I feel sorry for anyone who has to play the game without it

I'll probably get it eventually. I just haven't really been buying games recently, so I haven't had a need for it yet.

i bought it with resident evil: rev. and for waht capcom brought with the controls is a good solution...

But i still think they could bring solid controls only with stylus (tap the screen and aim and shoot with L button while for lateral step always L in the way it is but no stylus on screen obviously ;) ... i do not think is could be difficult to do...)

3ds do not really need a second analog, sorry people...

Of course if in a new iteration of 3ds they'll put it in i'm not gonna cry... but i think then no one (dev. side) could bother anymore about touch screen... and that will be a shame. (FPS on ds where good... and if someone will bring one on 3ds but only with 2 analog support... then i'll get angry!)
search for MossoW Switzerland! thanks!

I don't need it for any of my current games, but if I ever want one, it seems I'm out of luck since I haven't seen it anywhere in my country (Chile). Ok, I saw a few Revelations bundles, but they ran out of stock quickly (and I'm not buying that game just for the add-on). I really hope they release a Monster Hunter 3G bundle when (if) the game comes out here, since that's the main game where I think the CCP would be very useful to me.

Oh, and Nintendo can go to hell with their GameStop exclusives. I'm not paying US$50 for the shipping of a US$20 accesory. Way to screw all of Latin America, NoA.

To make a proper review of RE Revelations, I had to get it. So yes, I do have it. :?

It feels pretty comfy. I can totally see Smash Bros. use this control scheme, but it's a hard sell due to not many games using it right now. I would suggest waiting until there's more available before thinking of a purchase.

Here we go again! I'd expect GoNintendo to at least acknowledge that the CPP is more than a second stick, but nope. The 3DS is a portable console & thus needs console controls. The CPP gives you that by mimicking a traditional controller w/ triggers & contoured grip(nice for long play sessions) & of course the second stick. I don't see this happening in a redesign. I give Nintendo props for a great addition but the Gamestop exclusive sucks. I never thought it was dumb & was excited from the start.

i got and love it.its plays great with resident evil and metal gear!and i dont know what the big deal is cause i only use it at home.and when im away i use the touchscreen because it is all so a great option for both games!!

and thats why i got it to have another control option!!if you dont like it or dont need it dont buy it thats why its just an option right now[my little brother and i both have it and think its a great option]but in the future when they bring out a new 3ds with two circle pads people who want two pads but dont want to spend alot more to get the new systrm have the option to stick with what they got and still have all the control options!!thats why its a good idea and people will see that one day!!

I was considering getting one when MH3G comes out (if it comes out here) but I tried MH3G without one and it played fine.

So I'm really doubting its usefulness.
