Survival Horror market too small for Resident Evil franchise, says producer

"Especially for the North American market, I think the series needs to head in that [action-oriented] direction. [Resident Evil's primary games] need to be an extension of the changes made in Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5.

RE4 started in that direction, and RE5 kept going in that direction. And I think that especially for the North American market, we need to keeping going in that direction, and take that a step further. And that's exactly one of the reasons that Revelations is the way it is.

Looking at the marketing data [for survival horror games] ... the market is small, compared to the number of units Call of Duty and all those action games sell. A 'survival horror' Resident Evil doesn't seem like it'd be able to sell those kind of numbers." - producer Masachika Kawata

Well, Dead Space is survival horror game and it reached a million sold copies. Take pages from that series to build the next Resident Evil, Capcom. Don't go into action-oriented games like Resident Evil 5. PLEASE!

this, a million times, this!

i thought resident evil 6 was going to continue the pacing of revelations.. so they are going to completely change the franchise just to his call of duty style numbers? did i read that correctly?...... no, no sir, i dont like it! give me back my resi dammit! make me afraid to play it alone in the dark, again! i want to be nervous to go around corners! i was getting that old feeling back with revelations, why deny the fans? i feel most will agree. while re 4 was a landmark game, and it changed things for the better; re 5 was a shell of its former self. too bright and too loud to ever be scary.

I've been saying this for years. It's why I'm amazed that they keep digging a deeper and deeper grave for the Silent Hill series, 'cause it's sucked since the start, but people still continue to hope and pray for a return to the formula of the originals, but then hate it when it does hit that mark or close to it, 'cause it's not action-y enough for them. The last game to do Survival Horror even the slightest bit entertaining was Dead Space (though haven't played the sequel, so can't say anything about it), and that was largely because the game loved to put you into situations where you were SOL if you sucked and you never knew where these were going to come the first time around.

tl;dr: Survival Horror has been dead since RE2.

Survival Horror market too small for Resident Evil franchise

This is very sad. I think its safe to say that the audience for most games/genres are smaller than Call of Duty's audience.

Does this mean that all games should be action-shooters? No, of course not.

Survival Horror market too small for Resident Evil franchise

Postby thegreatscp » 22 Mar 2012 16:40

So basically, Capcom learned NOTHING from all the complaints about RE5?

If this is Capcom's view of their audience and how they intend to treat their customers, with games that are aimed at market trends instead of what the players want, then they deserve low sales and loss of profit for RE6. Good riddance.

I know several people who stopped playing RE after RE4 because they didn't like the continual watering-down of the gameplay with each new iteration. Capcom has basically lost that entire base of core fans that have been playing RE since the mid-1990's.

@joolswatsham

Amen, Jools! I was just about to say something similar. I think he fails to realize that changing Resident Evil into a Call of Duty style action game won't bring with it the Call of Duty sales. That thing's an anomaly. Doing so will just tick off your loyal Resident Evil fans.

This unfortunelty reflects my utter lack of feeling for anything in the reveal trailer for resident evil 6. The magic that made RE special and endearing to me is all but gone from that franchise this is just another nail in the coffin. :/

Why not keep Resident Evil as a survival horror game, and create another action/shooter game franchise, Capcom.

Don't crap on my Resident Evil!

I don't think we'll see Capcom come on with something new for a while, after what happened with Dark Void and Bionic Comando 3D

This. I actually saw the trailer for the 1st time at a Gamestop. While it was playing, I kept saying to myself, "please don't be resident evil...please don't be resident evil," and it was resident evil.

If they want to make the console RE's like Gears of War and Call of Duty, so be it. As long as they keep making RE 3DS games like Revelations, I'll be happy.

wouldnt it be ironic that when thats the case and no one wants anything to do with the franchise anymore , that'll be the time when capcom doesnt care what console they can manage to bring the dead franchise to. No more questioning, argueing with them about if nintendo will ever see a main stay entry released this gen or the next, they'll be so desperate to unload that pile of crap its become on to us.

Survival Horror market too small for Resident Evil franchise

Postby Gold_Ultima » 22 Mar 2012 17:18

So let me get this straight....they go a more horror direction for Revelations, it sells really well and the only complaints people had about the game that reviewers had was that the action parts where garbage and everyone just wanted to stay on the boat and enjoy the horror... Capcom totally ignores that and decides that they should just make RE5 again, the currently most hated game in the franchise.... Idiots....

Survival Horror market too small for Resident Evil franchise

Postby Artistic_Anarchy » 22 Mar 2012 17:23

I miss the survival horror aspect, but I also love the action oriented aspect the series is heading in ever since RE 4. They're still great games to me and offer a ton of replay value. The reveal trailer for RE 6 was incredible to me and made it my most anticipated game for the whole year. I think they can balance out the survival horror aspect with the action stuff, but they have not found a perfect mix for it. Revelation wasn't really survival horror to me, but more of a mini hybrid between both worlds that could use better pacing between both genres. Not once did I feel like I was trying to survive in Revelations.

"Let's turn every game into Call of Duty."

Don't get me wrong, I had fun with CoDMW, World at War and MW2 (the games that came out before Activision destroyed the original Infinity Ward) but sacrificing every other genre to emulate CoD is definitely not the answer.

Shame.

Sad thing is, Operation Racoon City was their attempt at emulating the other popular dude bro franchise Gears of War...and we all know how that turned out going by the reception from fans and critics alike. :/ If COD really is the future then RE as we know it is doomed.

I'm hoping for a Clock Tower revival. Hopefully, the Fatal Frame II remake (and success *crosses fingers*) will get more survival horror games out the door and on store shelves.

@Zug Zug RE4 begun this [also taking alot of the tension away with The Merchant and buyable stuff].

RE5 went full-on into action and co-op territory.

Seems like RE6 will be half old RE and half new RE.
