Will fans get shut down for trying to make a Chrono Trigger HD remake? They are certainly trying to complete their work in the shadows, not attaching any credits or a website to the project. Will this tactic keep Square-Enix from hunting them down and stopping the project?

I wonder if they will ever remake it? Hopefully it would be on a nintendo console if they do.

You're helping them so much to hide by posting this, RMC.

I've not even remotely versed in the legal issues behind these sorts of things, but I've always wondered why IP owners don't just let any given project be finished and then swoop in and claim ownership of it after the heavy lifting's been done.

Chrono Trigger does not need an HD remake anyway.

Why on earth would 1up put together this feature? If these guys are trying to work without drawing attention from Square-Enix...why publicize the project at all? Just keep your mouth shut until they're done hiding.

Honestly, though, I don't really believe that Chrono Trigger needs an HD remake. I guess it would be neat, but I just don't get why people are so dead set on making this happen...

My thoughts exactly. If they are trying to hide their development of this game from Square Enix then sites like 1up and GoNintendo aren't really helping them out too much. Very ironic indeed. lol

@Mako
If you read the story on 1up, you'll come to see what they are doing to avoid being given a cease and desist by Square Enix. If they didn't want attention from people like us they wouldn't be posting screenshots on Reddit. Of course gaming journalism is going to let people know what they're doing.

Indeed, these fan projects are admirable but they are fighting a losing battle.

When all that time developing could be used to make an original game they could possibly get off the ground some day.

They're just asking to get shut down. Their plan is probably just to get Square-Enix to C&D them so that they can make them out to be villains. If they really wanted to remake it without getting caught, they'd wait until it was done to break the news, like others said... that's what I'd do if I was making a fan game of some sort.

@PaperLink64

I Agree. All design choices from the original where made for the SNES hardware. In HD it a bit like creating multicolor chess game. But good luck to the creators, I just hope they are brave enough to change besides the graphics also the other ingredients of the game. Even the story, with respect of course.. But make it better in every way, that would be interesting :)

Even if they own the rights to the IP, they don't have a right claim ownership of other people's work on that IP. It's why companies don't read fan submissions of plot ideas and stuff, and will generally send them back unopened.
