Wii U is Coming: It is Now Time to Catch-Up on Your Backlog!

Postby HylianTom » 14 Feb 2012 18:17

Hey fellow Nintendo freaks! The Wii U (or whatever we end-up calling it) is coming, and from the looks of the Wii release schedule, we will have some periods where releases are sparse. You won't hear me complaining too much though - this means more time to catch-up on those games you have in your backlog.

So that's the point of this thread: what old games are you going to play before the Wii U finally arrives? Are you re-playing any old gems so that they aren't on your shelf, taunting you as you film your Wii U unpackaging videos?

It's February, so let's be pessimistic/realistic and say that Nintendo will launch the Wii U in November. This gives us 9 months before this new baby console is hatched. That's a lot of time to clear backlog!

I've gone through all of the console Zelda series over the past 3.5 months, but I am going to play through Skyward Sword's Hero Mode at least one more time (love the difficulty). And I'll spend a few months or so for Xenoblades. But after that, things get murkier..

I'd like to spend one day replaying Faxanadu.. but this time, I'll remember to write-down my mantra correctly!
Another day or two will be spent with the original Kid Icarus.
Then? StarTropics! It's been about 10 years since I've gone through it.

(BTW, if anyone from Nintendo is reading this: feel free to bring any of those franchises back. Really. You'll have free access to my bank account if you do so.)

It won't take more than 12 hours to go through Beyond Good & Evil one more time.

Secret of Mana - another game I haven't played in over a decade. I don't remember most of the game, other than the facts that:
(a) I spent the first few hours of the gaming grinding experience points on rabbit-like creatures by a waterfall;
(b) My team had to fight a moving wall at one point, I think; and,
(b) I loved the music. Truly, some of the best gaming music ever.

While we're on RPGs: I'd love to go through Tales of Symphonia one more time. It's been about three years since I last played the game, and I loved loved loved Lloyd and the gang. But there are a few key choices I'd have to make in the game, and I don't remember them or their consequences very well.. so I need to read-up on which path(s) I'd like to choose.

I've only beaten Eternal Darkness for one of the three endings, so another time or two through that game would be appreciated.

It looks like my slate is full for this year, and realistically, I won't get through all of these titles (especially if I'm online with you guys so much). If Pikmin 3 in indeed a launch title, I'd be tempted to spend the last month or two before launch with the first two games, just to get a bit of re-orientation to the Pikmin universe (I like to do this with big Nintendo title launches). But I don't know if I can stomach another no-Pikmin-death run through 2.. that took a while and was incredibly difficult.

So.. your turn! What are you going to re-visit or clear off of the shelf while we're waiting in this final stretch? I know 9 months sounds like a long time, and it'll feel like it at some points - but you'll look back six or seven years from now (as the Wii U2 is about to release) and say to yourself, "Damn - time flies!"

You already have all that you need to make this the best gaming year of your life. Go to it. 8)

I'm doing some games on my PS3. Trying to see what games I want for Wii U that had games on PS3. Played Arkham Asylum and want Arkham City, About to play Darksiders, and trying to find Lego Harry Potter Years 1-4. I figure the Lego games are the same.

Xenoblade is going to be my last Wii game unless Last Story comes.

I'm only going to support 3DS, PS3, & Wii U. I'm really hoping Wii U has an achievement system because if it does then I'm going to focus on it's achievements and focus little on PS3. Maybe if a game is coming to Wii U that had a prequel on PS3. Get it cheap used to test it out.

I've put my PS3 aside and am dedicating the next month or two to playing a couple of Wii games I really want to have played before I put the system away, probably for good. That's Xenoblade, Sin and Punishment 2, probably Last Story and Muramasa.

I've had Final Fantasy VI downloaded since what seems like forever, so I really want to play that too.

I plan for Xenoblade to be my last for the Wii but Wii U is backwards compatible. I have been wanting to play Arc Rise Fantasia. I'm going to put my Wii up when Wii U comes. I've brought my Gamecube out for it's games.

Well, I'll probably start to play games on the Wii that I didn't get when they came out or have been eyeing but never got around to. I still have the Metroid Prime Triliogy to beat, Kirby's Return to Dreamland (although I think I'm almost done), and I hardly touched Monster Hunter Tri, and also the ambassador games (I want to beat the 3 Zelda games I'm pretty close to beating 1 and 2 but haven't really played Minish Cap much). I also have Batman AC, and maybe LittleBig Planet 2 to play. I'm thinking about playing my old Wii games like Twilight Princess and Mario Galaxy 2 (I lost 1 and thought it was the better game D: ) since I got a new Wii a few months ago and don't have any save data for them. I'm hoping to get a job when schools out so I can buy Donkey Kong Country Returns, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Goldeneye Wii (mainly for the gold classic controller if I can find it), Xenoblade, and MAYBE Metroid Other M. Also I'll be going to yard sales/thrift stores to see if I can find any NES/SNES/N64 games I can play and add to my collection (I really want that Pacman 2 game for the Super Nintendo lately, my brother hated it when he had it since you couldn't control him but I hope I can find it to play). So I think I can wait until the Wii U comes out.

Also does anyone have any recommendations for Wii games that they think everyone should play or people might have looked over?

Indeed. I'd very politely turn-in my two-week notice at work (don't wanna leave them hanging), and immediately begin to look for a general contractor for my modestly-sized dream house - complete with a Nintendo gaming room.

But for now, the best I can do is to work three twelve-hour shifts per week, leaving me with four-day weekends. We just started it, and I never want to go back to working five days per week ever again. My gaming time has ramped-up significantly ever since.

I'd take a slight pay cut to work 3 13 hour shifts. not even kidding.

what old games are you going to play before the Wii U finally arrives?

I'm going to try to finish Super Paper Mario, Paper Mario (VC), Sonic Heroes (replaying it), The Legend of Zelda OoT 3D, Super Mario 3D Land, and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.

My Wii backlog now includes the following disc-based games:
- Flingsmash
- Little King's Story
- Mario Super Sluggers
- Rhythm Heaven Fever
- Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World
- Wii Music
- Wii Party

I'm assuming I'll finish one of these games.

Working on Okami right now. That's about it for Wii. On other systems I have DQ9, the rest of bit.trip saga, Chrono Cross, and the original Tomb Raider. There are way more than those, but they are the ones I'm actively playing right now.

I wish I had time to play games right now. I have at least 20 games I have to beat spread across DS, 3DS, Wii, PC, and PS3... Thankfully I will have more time once this semester is over because I really want to get back into Skyward Sword having only put in 4 hours so far. :/

Yeah, guys.. if you haven't done so already, I highly suggest starting up a backlog over at http://www.backloggery.com. You can find mine at http://www.backloggery.com/Racht. Check it out. It's incredibly helpful, as I've been able to run through and beat lots of games in my backlog last summer and into the fall season. Trying to finish up Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones currently. Final chapter, hooray!

I don't really care to use a site. I do use Gamespot a bit for that but not as much anymore. I need a turbo controller for PS3 so I can get some trophies that are better with it plus have a 2nd controller. I feel I can get platinum in Batman Arkham Asylum. Playing Blazblue Continuum shift and will start on Darksiders soon.

I know i'll be getting a Wii U on pre-order. ive been saving money since the end of last summer $30-$50 here and there; because i want to get at least 3-5 games with it as of now the list of launch titles keeps changing slightly; but im really hoping for some of those big boxed collectors editions that we got shafted out of on the Wii

ive missed a lot of the more niche titles on the wii, despite some of them looking the most interesting. I have to play muramasa, madworld, NMH2, a boy and his blob, sin and punishment 2 and a bunch more...the wii still has a lot of life left for me

I've been using my backloggery frequently and plowing through games on my 360 (I got it Christmas 2008 and basically just stockpile used games and wound up having too many and not playing/finishing many of them yet).

I just recently finished the Dreamcast Collection, Alan Wake's American Nightmare, and Paper Mario (VC).

Currently, I am playing Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door and Halo: Reach's story mode (my first Halo ever, but it was free from last year, so why not?), hoping to finish both in time for Xenoblade (I am halfway through Reach and I am going for my 4th Crystal Star in PM:TTYD). I also play Kirby: Mass Attack now and then (but haven't in a while because I was going nuts playing the Dreamcast games).

I still have at least 20-ish games between XBLA and retail on the 360 and under 15 for Wii. Only a few on DS/DSiWare though.

Then I have a handful of PS2/GCN games I never finished and like 2...3 PSP games? Hahaha.

Part of why my backlog is so huge is because I had a period where my 360 was broken, so I couldn't play the games for half a year because I was broke and couldn't afford to fix it (and my money's priority lied within other things) and then my Wii broke too (Other M; lol). So I had a huge gap in 2011 where I could only play my DS and PS2. Which isn't bad, but I don't have nearly as many unplayed games for them as I do consoles.

I've been out of money for a while, but there are many games I plan on getting: Sin & Punishment 2, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Kirby's Return to Dreamland, Muramasa, Tales of the Abyss, Kid Icarus Uprising, plus I still want to collect all the items in Skyward Sword and Mario 3D Land. I'm also replaying A Link to the Past and Secret of Mana. And of course I plan on getting Xenoblade and the Last Story.

And my friend just gave me a Xbox 360. I don't even know where to start with that!
