if you are indeed making a Super Mario Bros. 4, please do the following:
Make it imaginative- no more of the same-old same-old mushroom kingdom that's been infecting recent Mario games and making them boring. Brings us some fresh new locales and enemies. (like how Mario 1, 2, 3, and World all have completely different visuals and locations and enemies).
Make it a 2D platformer. Enough said.
Make it 2D. Like, REALLY 2D. I want to see sprites. Take a look at the Epic Mickey 3DS game. Take a loot at Wayforward's work. Take a look at King of Fighters XII. Bring back the old spritey mario we know and love.

If SMW is Super Mario Bros. 4.. What does that make Yoshi's Island? Super Mario Bros. 5? Super Mario Bros. 4.5? And what about the sequel(s) to Yoshi's Island? o.o

If anything, it's really, really awkward and convoluted, and I don't think Nintendo's ever going to do something like using different numbers for the same game in today's age; that'd be really asinine.
All I can say is that there's a distinction between sequels and spin-offs. Although it's fair game to consider the first Wario Land game to be Super Mario Land 3, no one considers (nor should consider) Wario Land II and afterwards to be Super Mario Land 4, 5, and so on. It's like that.

Well to be fair, there was a Nintendo power magazine that ACKNOWLEDGED the Super Mario Bros. 4 part until the game's launch here. So it's not like it was unheard of outside Japan until the internet. Jus' sayin'.

Is that so? I can't say that I was aware of that, but okay.
Even then, I don't understand what difference that fact would ultimately make. Either way, we still have name inconsistencies on both sides of the world.
