The Power Glove actually worked as described if you went through all these steps (as well as an additional calibration step they don't mention in the video). Most of the time it wasn't as good as a controller, but for Punch-Out, I really enjoyed it.

I love the powerglove. It's so bad.

I tried using my brother's old powerglove once and programming it was like trying to disarm a bomb. I imagine it was exactly like disarming a bomb if you were a parent back then. A 6-year-old tantrum bomb.
