Favorite obscure Wii titles?

Postby bobafruit » 11 Apr 2012 02:22

Now that the Wii is coming to a close. What's your favorite obscure Wii game? Maybe a game that hasn't gotten a lot of attention, or maybe the review scores weren't real good but the game is interesting enough to make it worthwhile? Are you really into Disaster:day of crisis or Castle of Shikigami III or...?

I'll list some games I liked and the biggest failing. :D

I enjoyed the hell out of "Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces" even though the difficulty spiked and I never finished it.
I liked "phantom brave" even if it is a PS2 port.

The Kororinpa games. Simple concept, rock-solid controls, adorable presentation, and some of the most ruthless level design on the system when played for true completion.

If they had stage descriptions and those descriptions were honest, this is how they would read: "You think you know how to roll a ball? F*** you."

and

"Oh, you a Super Monkey Ball veteran? Lol that's cute. Maybe you'll be good enough to get a bronze medal!"

Klonoa, hands down. One of my favorite games of all time, let alone on Wii. Seriously, if you don't own that game, you need to do yourself a favor and buy it RIGHT NOW. You'll thank me.

I'd say Okami, too, but I'm pretty sure that's too mainstream.

Totally need to buy the Kororinpa games now.

YES. I got it for $20 (new!) right around the time RMC wouldn't stop gushing about it on the podcast. I couldn't have been happier with my purchase. I even sent him an email about how much I loved it lol.

Also, I really enjoyed the Excite games. Not sure if they're technically "obscure", but they are definitely fun as heck.

Oh, and Twilight Scene It...wait...didn't mean that one. But seriously, I did buy that game...for my fiancee.

The ones I had the best time with were No More Heroes, No More Heroes 2, Muramasa the Demon Blade, and Sin and Punishment Star Successor. Also really enjoyed Lost Winds and Nyx Quest Kindred Spirits on WiiWare!

Wow, I forgot all about the Kororinpa games....those WERE pretty good, but somewhere around the mid-to-end point, I got tired of them... real shame, I never really even made my own level in the second game. Would have been nice...

I'd have to say SSX Blur and Super Swing Golf 2. SSX Blur is one of 'those' games from the earlier times, where it showcased everything we expected motion-controlled Wii games to be, and it did it VERY well. (I hear Godfather Blackhand did this as well, but I was never into those types of games.) SSG2, to me, does a great job of motion controlled golfing as well, even without WM+. On top of that, instead of trying to be realistic and designed after official golf courses, it does a great job of giving you fun and unique courses, and the anime/cartoony nature of it all means that you're not constantly bothered by it not being as realistic as Tiger Woods tries to be. The SMB3-like map system also gives it a nice nostalgic feel to it, and going for unlockables is fun.

Obscure titles?

I loved Disaster, although I wish I could buy myself an actual copy in US. I only played a not-so-real copy a few years ago. I actually really enjoyed it.

I also liked Mad World. And PokePark if you consider that obscure. And Back to the Future. I loved that game.

I own Muramasa, but haven't played it. I also own Baroque and Cursed Mountain and haven't played them much yet.

I have a backlog of obscure games to play/get. Like, I want Fragile, A Boy & His Blob and Lost in Shadow still, but haven't bought them yet. Feelsbadman.jpg

As far as WiiWare, LostWinds and LIT. Didn't play Nyx though. D:

I was going the say Geometry Wars: Galaxies, it's an unbelievably addictive arcade shooter, but then MoldyClay reminded me of Cursed Mountain. Cursed Mountain is an awesome survival horror game, like a low budget RE4 with ghosts instead of zombies and spells instead of guns. The Tibet mountain setting is also really well realized on the Wii hardware with some of the nicest environments on the system.

Cursed Mountain is without a doubt my favorite. I think what made me love it so much was just because of atmosphere itself, and it always keeping me on my toes with what I was getting myself into. I'm also a believer now that the best way to play that game is at night with earphones plugged up to the TV. 8)

I'm drawing a blank on the name of the game, but you played through half of the game as a scorpion and the other half as a spider. Billy Bob Thornton did voice acting for one of the characters. That was a fun game.

Unfortunately I havent gotten too far into the obscure titles...Nintendo needs to stop releasing good games so I can keep up.

I guess of the games i have Zack and Wiki is the most "obscure".

Also @CaptainColon: Deadly Creatures

Not 'obscure' per se, but Little King's Story is a game that deserves to sell as much as Wii Play. One of my favorite games of all time.

As Hamr mentioned, the Kororinpa titles are also great. If I had one complaint, I guess it would be the boxart.

Zack & Wiki has been my favorite obscure title so far. I have a few others I have bought and still need to play though.

Has anyone ever played Cursed Mountain? It seems kind of interesting.

Right, I forgot to mention Elebits. Loved that game. So cute. :3

A Boy and His Blob was also great. The hug button was the best game mechanic I've ever seen. It is the epitome of the entire history, present, and future of games -- no of humanity! The mechanic of friendship.

No More Heroes 1 and 2
Madworld
Zack and Wiki
Battalion Wars 2 (this game seriously doesn't get enough love, hardly anyone ever talks about it when talking about "obscure" Wii games)
Sin and Punishment 2
Godfather: Blackhand Edition (like MoldyClay pointed out, this is one of those "first year" Wii games that showcased the basic Wii remote [as in the non-motionplus wii remote] really well)
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (okay so the Silent Hill name is not obscure, but this entry wasn't played by many due to people who whined too much over the fact it's a reimagining of an older game that plays out more like an adventure game than a horror game where you get guns; this game was awesome from beginning to end, and easily one of my top Silent Hill games)

These are great. I really was excited for BWii when the Wii came out, but I didn't get a Wii until 2 years after launch so it was hard to track down a copy (but I did).
And Sin and Punishment 2 is just a crazy game, I don't know if I really love it or not :P

Did anyone play Sniper Elite? It was a 2010 PS2 xbox port, the original was like 04-05. There's a PS360 remake coming out soon. I just saw a copy of the wii version the other day and had no idea what the game was.

I guess mine would be Excite Truck. It's not really obscure, but I really don't see a lot of love for it. Either that or maybe the Metal Slug Anthology. Those were awesome games that ate up a lot of quarters for me as a kid.

SSX Blur. Even EA seem to be trying to forget this ever happened, despite being really great and getting good reviews. Once you figured out how to do the special moves (which took me the best part of a week) they were actually really easy and reliable to do. It looked stylish, had a cool sound-track and for the most part ran perfectly smooth.

MadWorld was great, and I like it as something that took a glance at stereotypical Wii games and ran as far as it could in the complete opposite direction. It failed to drum up the controversy SEGA/ Platinum aimed for, but as it stands it's one of without doubt at least one of the most memorable Wii games.

No More Heroes. Despite being censored (which was a dumb-fuck decision) I still love the game. Games are made by companies for the sole reason to sell to gamers and make money. I know Grasshopper aren't any different, but they convey the image of not giving a shovel about any of that and making games just for the sheer thrill of making games better than any other developer I can think of. And this game captured that vibe perfectly.
