New Super Mario Bros. 2 is the latest in the 2D Platformer series, where you, Mario, have to rescue the fair Princess Peach from her standard kidnapper, Bowser. You would think Bowser would've figured this out by now, don't you think? In total disregard for saving Peach, Mario decides he needs money for new overalls and power-ups, so he decides to collect 1 Million Gold Coins for some reason. Will you help him? Or will you leave him to face the IRS with Coin in hand? And to coincide the release of "Give Us Your Money 2" Nintendo has decided to release the Nintendo 3DS XL, for those who wish for bigger screens and a better designed 3DS.

Downloadable Content
New Super Mario Bros. 2 will be Nintendo's first worldwide attempt at downloadable content in-game, by offering level packs at undisclosed times and prices. The only thing we know now is that these levels are being developed after the game's retail release date.

The first 3 Coin Rush level packs will be released on this day, or as a bundle for an undisclosed amount. Each Pack will consist of 3 set levels that you can race through over and over again, and will not be randomized.

Pack B: This will focus on Competition, allowing Players to compete for Leaderboard Positioning
Pack C: This will focus on Hardcore Platforming, for Expert Players Only
Mega Man 9 isn't hard, you're just not paying attention

I've got mixed feelings here.

On the one hand, I'm glad they're making this instead of trying to force everyone to only play 3D Mario games.

On the other, this looks about as bland, basic, and uninspired as they could have gotten away with. It seriously looks like a modified, lower-res version of NSMBWii, and the environments are almost identical. I'm fine with more 3D games being made, I'd just like to see 2D entries given the same level of effort and ambition instead of being treated as second-class cash-ins. Sadly, it looks like that isn't happening.

I'm very excited for it. I hope the difficulty is higher, but the Wii one was tons of fun. The DS one was extremely easy which kind of ruined it. I can't wait to use the Raccoon suit again.

I feel the exact same way. I don't understand why fans of 2D Mario continue to be treated like second-rate customers. It really feels like there is absolutely no ambition, here.

I'm not a big fan of the New Super Mario Bros. series. They have both been generic feeling to me. Like they try to give that classic Mario feeling, but don't.

I'm definitely thinking that "gold" is going to be a theme in this one (similar to how the tanooki tails was a theme in 3D Land). There's a screenshot that shows all the enemies gold color (Koopas and Piranha Plants) and a separate screenshot that has Mario in gold. Why gold? What does it do? I don't know....but it is something they're pressing. Probably why the "2" is yellowish gold in color as well.

I like that you can fly as a Tanooki again. :3

I would love an actual new 2d mario game. and not one that looks like it was cobbled together from spare parts. but, we all know this is a quick and dirty cash in title. cheap to make, just enough effort put into it to live up to nintendo standard, and out the door to sell a bucket of copies.

They say they're aiming for a new standard for 2D mario games; so it'll probably introduce a lot of new gameplay mechanics and new game design ideas (progression/etc..)
It terms of graphics, it's basically a DS game in stereoscopic 3d, and it looks pretty lazy right now. Hopefully, they'll change it a bit.

The Super Mario series is my favourite franchise in Gaming, but there has been a mainstream title released every year for the past four years (NSMBWii in 09, SMG2 in 10, SML3D in 11, and now NSMB2 in 12), and even though I like these games alot (Galaxy 2 is easily one of the greatest games ever, IMO), I think they need to give the plumbers a break. New Super Mario Bros. 2 should have a REAL unveiling at NintE3ndo 2012 and should have some sort of connectivity with Nintendo WiiU, and after it's released they should give Miyamoto design 2014-15 the next installment in the Super Mario series for Nintendo WiiU (preferably w/ the New Super Mario team and Super Mario Galaxy team working together under him)! I dread waiting this long but I want the next step to be as great a leap in creativity and innovation as Galaxy was, plus some of Nintendo's other franchises need love too (F-Zero U-Force, anyone? Or maybe a Other M-esque sequel to Metroid Fusion for the Nintendo 3DS).

Yeah, I totally agree. I've completed both of the NSMB games so far, and I just feel like their bland, uninspired nature isn't appealing at all. It rests completely on the series' laurels rather than making improvements and innovations, which is ironic considering the title. That said, I definitely saw this announcement coming. Should Nintendo correct their mistakes and make a legitimately challenging, creative 2D Mario game, I may just buy it. But for now, I am very skeptical.

I hope that's right, I've still been trying to find a game anywhere near as good and adventurous as SMB3, or even SMW. But I get a bad feeling it's just going to be the same bland overworld maps, same plastic~y backgrounds and generic models, and all of that. It already looks like the same robbed assets from the other two games, so I have my doubts.

...like it matters, because I'm sure I'll be buying it ANYWAY, but I'll sure wish it was SMB3's style of course. Oh well. I guess even NIntendo has just about forgotten that era by now.

Only four screens, neither of them really excites me. I do like the spider-webs, reminds me of one of my favorite stages in NSMBWii (World 7-2). But otherwise, these screens only bring back memories of the nightmare that was NSMB. Of course, I had no interest in NSMBWii, but once I got around to playing it... dayum! I won't mind same-y environment if they introduce new hazards and enemies.

I think it's almost inevitable they'll take ideas from Wario Land and the Mario title that was in developpment for the virtual boy. There could be some interesting things here. In the second screenshot, you see that the game works on two different level of depth, like the VB games, and some levels in DKCR. Will it be enough to fresh up the gameplay ?

I think the game looks strange/disapointing for most of us for a particular reason : it'll be released very soon. For SMBMii, it looks a lot like SMBWii, but at least, they have more time left for developpment.

Here, the game will be released in 4 months. I doubt the build here is anything more than 1 month old. A game can change drastically in terms of artstyle (I remember Super Mario Bros. Wii received some late improvements for backgrounds, with the inclusion of 3d objects in the background). But yeah, the screens here don't tell a lot, and makes the game look a lot like NSMB. So yeah, maybe more news on the 26th...

Miyamoto had already confirmed that a new Super Mario Bros. game was in the works for the 3DS last year. It is this game.

When I first saw those shots I almost thought they was from the DS game. I presume If Ninty are keeping this same style for the 3DS game then New Super Mario Bros Mii will be exactly like what we saw at E3 last year.

Though I understand Nintendo keeping these games similar because of the sale numbers I did expect something different, something to wow me for the next side-scrolling Mario games.

While I really don't like that it looks like it has the same level themes as the past two games, I'll probably still pick this up if it includes a good amount of new enemies, hazards, and power-ups or at least include some more things that haven't been seen for a while.

At this point though, the only thing that's really piquing my interest is the whole gold thing that's been present in the screens we've seen so far.

I have a feeling that this game will be receiving LOTS of DLC content since mario 2d games are long tail sellers and iwata pondered this idea in the past. Hopefully the levels are better designed than NSMB DS. I still do not know why that game got good reviews. It was ridiculously easy and not fun. I still had way more fun replaying super mario world compared to that game.

Ah, I see what you mean now. I thought you were saying that the entire development began no longer than a month ago, which sounded rather ridiculous to me.

Would love to see the series look more "cartoony" again. Hand-drawn 2d sprites ala Rayman Origins would suit the Mario series really well in my opinion. Maybe the rumored Super Mario Bros. 4 will realize my dream (still confused on that title though...pretty sure that was Super Mario World)...
