Do certain Fanboy/girls piss you off?

Postby TheLastBlade » 25 Apr 2012 14:31

Was there ever a moment in which Fans of a certain company, game, and/or something you thought was lame made you mad?

Honestly, I hate when people go up front and proudly proclaim they're part of the "superior" minority in which they believe is superior to other's way to play/watch/enjoy a game/show/movie.

Examples:

- Majora's Mask > Ocarina of Time: Now for the record I have NOT played Majora's Mask ever in my entire life (yet) so I can't form a proper opinion on this particular subject. However, whenever I go on a website somewhere and state my love for Ocarina of Time, some random spontzes came up to me and say, "Nah, Majora's Mask is better." To which I state, "Huh, well I'll try to play it whenever I get the chance." And you know what happened? They said, "What? Well no wonder you haven't played Majora's Mask. You're to busy worshiping overrated garbage." To which I state, "Well ok I guess... I said I didn't even play Majora's Mask yet." And then this comment really grinds my gears, "Yeah yeah, good luck dying with Overrated of Time. While the true gamers play the real BEST GAME OF ALL TIME." ... Seriously? People keep telling me that people that loves Ocarina of Time have snide remarks on saying that it's better than any game created before and after (Actually that can be a true fact). But having being told I suck because I did not play (which I didn't) or like a certain game, really makes me think they're hypocritical. And you know what? This wasn't exclusive with me either. I have seen Majora's Mask fans picking on Ocarina of Time fans stating said statements to them. Well thanks a lot for going out of your way to make everyone feel bad. To be fair, Ocarina of Time also has the ego of Ganondorf in which they're the king of everything.

- Highschool of the Dead: People know I detest this anime with a passion... It's Highschool of the Dead; so expect fanboys and girls to tell things you don't even care about to convince you that it's "one of the best animes and show in general ever created!"

- James Camerons: Avatar: ..... I hate this movie. People come up to me and say, "Have you seen Avatar?" I go, "Yes, but I didn't like it." They go, "WHAT?! You insensitive jerk!" .... Let's just say that they call people insensitive for not caring about a generic movie...

Well, that took longer than it supposed to. Has this ever happened to you?
Bang.

See you, Space Cowboy...

For the most part I seperate fanboys and fangirls into two seperate categories - enthusiasts and jerkwads. A lot of people will say that it's love for a certain company/game/movie that makes people act in an aggressive manner, but I disagree. I think people who will jump all over you for liking something they don't, or disliking something you do, has more to do with that person's character than how much they love whatever product they're so into. I tend to stay away from people like that.

I just find it funny more than anything else. I'm into video games to have fun. Why am I going to go on line and argue with some anonymous person because our tastes don't line up perfectly? Just shrug it off. It is pretty funny when you look at it objectively.

And, as an aside, I hope these certain abrasive individuals haven't put you off wanting to play Majora's Mask. It is a fantastic game, although I would concede not everyone's cup of tea, which is why I'm always surprised to see people trying to FORCE others to play it. Still, it's worth putting a little time into to see if it's the kind of thing you'd enjoy, because the premise is fairly unique.

@Poopaloop Cheers to that!

Not too long ago RMC posted a story with an accompanying screenshot that featured a custom character who bore a mild resemblance to FFXIII's Lightning. In the comments I found (somewhat surprisingly, because apparently I don't keep up with the internetz at all) some VERY evident distaste of the character and the game itself. Personally, I enjoyed XIII. I wouldn't call it amazing, but I wouldn't call it the worst FF in the series. I don't even think a series like that can have a "best" or "worst" entry, because ultimately it comes down to opinions on gaming preferences. Anyway, it didn't make me mad as much as disappointed that there would be such a conscious effort to hate. That's not to say no one should be allowed to ever strongly dislike something, but I think it's okay to not be so forward with disdain every now and again.

Though people still will be "forward", and that's where Poopaloop's advice comes in.

theres this person called stealth on destructoid, he's by far the most entertaining internet fanboy that I have ever come across, I find all fanboys to be hilarious and great fun.

The only fans that really piss me off are nintendo fanboys which defend absolutely everything and anything that nintendo do because assuming that nintendo reads what their fans say on the internet, they are kind of making them do stupid things, like how they defend the 3DS having friendcodes and friendcodes being no different to phone numbers. If those people stopped being so damn deluded and joined all the none crazy fans in taking friendcodes down right from the start then the 3DS probably wouldn't have friendcodes.

actually scratch that last bit, nintendo are far too arrogant for that.

Some anime fanboys piss me off to no extent. I like anime, just not every anime that gets spit out of Japan. Some of the people I've talked to say that they loved every anime they've seen, which I just find impossible... Usually I get peer pressured in to watching said crappy anime for 2 hours while I feel my brain cells dying away...

One other thing would be video game fanboys. Not just one company or franchise, mind you, but all the rabid fanboys out there. Poopaloop already stated this well in his comment. They do make for good entertainment in forums and comment sections, but that's about it.

I dislike it when people are nasty, offensive, and unwilling to have a reasonable conversation in general, so yeah, there are times I get annoyed with people who are like that over things like video games. Some people are just going to be like that, though, so I'm not going to try to convince them otherwise.

Masahiro Sakurai fanboys in the Kirby fandom. Other people have worked on the franchise, too, and their opinions and visions for the series are just as important--especially the ones currently working on the series, seeing as how they're the ones making the games, and Sakurai isn't. But bring up the anime, or heaven forbid have Kirby say "poyo" in a game, and it's NO BUT SAKURAI SAID

There are a lot of people out there who love the anime and Kirby's voice actress, and don't mind that the games are borrowing elements from the anime. "BUT SAKURAI" means jack all unless he steps back into the fray and makes a game. And it always means jack all in regards to the anime's/a game's quality. You don't have to like them, but bludgeoning people over the head with the opinion of someone who hasn't been actively involved in the series for years isn't going to work, and is going to make you look like an elitist jerk.

The only sort of fanboy I can't stand are the people who like system x then go to websites dedicated to systems y or z only to talk about how much that particular company sucks compared to company x. I don't mind a little fanboyism, but I don't want that opinion constantly shoved in my face either.

That is idiotic.

I think Majora's Mask *is* better than Ocarina of Time, for various reasons, but I can also see how someone could not enjoy the game. The only time I belittle someone for preferring OoT is when it's a blind nostalgia love where they go "OOT IS THE BEST GAME EVER AND IT CAN NEVER BE BEAT".

Preferring Majora's Mask is all about taste and what you're looking for in a game. For example, I love the game Deadly Premonition. For the same reasons as MM (and now Xenoblade). Has to do with the atmosphere and the small details to everything with the characters, the world and everything in it. Coincidentally, all of these games have characters that run on schedules.

But I can see why people wouldn't like them. I only get pissed when someone blatantly didn't give them a chance and are just putting it down.

Having said that, the types of fans that piss me off:

- Anime fangirls and to a lesser extent, fanboys. This really extends to everything Japanese. Jpop, Jrock, anime, manga, subs, etc. I love anime and I like a bit of Japanese music and sometimes I prefer Japanese voices, but the fanbase in general (pick a series or musician and my feelings are the same) is absurd. A bunch of English speaking tools and crazies acting like Japan is their long-lost motherland that they worship. And the whole dubs/subs thing. Japanese voice actors are not magically superior just because they made the anime. Some Japanese voices and deliveries feel just as bad sounding or worse than what we get with our dubs.

And the reason fangirls are worse is because they ruin everything with yaoi.

- Console fanboys. Specifically, blind ones. Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are companies. They have no loyalty to us, just our money. There is no reason someone should be restricting themselves to *one* console based on who made it. If it's an issue of money, sure, but don't avoid buying another console because "Oh, Sony/MS are the devil". And then they damage control missing out on great games with stuff like "oh, game's trash anyway". Get out of here.

I feel like Nintendo fanboys are the worst, but it's probably because I see them the most. The things that they get mad about are insane.

Also, evidently, if you say something positive about a competitor, you're the enemy. I can't express how often on this site in the past I was labeled a "troll" that "hates Nintendo" simply because I was unhappy with their decisions in things. Or didn't like a game or two. Or because I own a 360. Despite the fact that I own pretty much every big Nintendo release on Wii and a bunch of great 3rd parties and own every Nintendo console except Virtual Boy and 3DS (but I have a fund set aside specifically for getting one). Oh, and a majority of my favorite games/series are Nintendo ones. Yeah okay.

- Miyamoto fanboys. I love Miyamoto. I love most of his games. But he's not some Saint that does no wrong and all his ideas are perfect and innovative. Especially not anymore. I feel like he's just recycling stuff and shoving his hands in everything and ignoring others' creative freedom. He barely gives anyone else a chance to do anything without coming in and messing everything up or doing things *his* way. Back off. You made Wii Music and rehashed Nintendogs. You are not bringing your A game anymore, bro. People need to stop putting him on a pedestal.

- Pretty much every fanbase, for everything. Like with anime, some of the same reasons fall into place here. Another thing is the fact that if you don't like someone's favorite game, you're an idiot or a troll. I don't understand how a fanboy's mind works.

GAME DIDN'T GET A PERFECT 10 BUT GAVE THIS GAME ON HD CONSOLES A 10? ? REVIEWER HATES NINTENDO. CAN'T TAKE THEM SERIOUSLY.
DON'T LIKE THIS GAME FOR 'LEGITIMATE' REASONS? YOU'RE A TROLL AND AN HD FANBOY.

And so on and so forth, making up excuses instead of just accepting that lol people have opinions and yours is not the "right one".

On a side note, I used to have a Link avatar here, which was solely because I made a texture for Brawl and needed a pic and it was readily available. I was talking about something and must have been defending Zelda or something in an argument on GoNintendo's comments section somewhere.

Someone actually told me that my opinion was irrelevant because I was a "Zelda fanboy" due to my avatar and that I had to shut up.

Really? Because of my avatar? And yes, I am a huge Zelda fan, but what? Pff..

Oh, I also hate Indie Game fanboys. I like a lot of Indie games, like Machinarium, Cave Story, Limbo, FEZ, VVVVVV, Tower of Heaven, etc, but don't get all hipster on me for not appreciating every artsy fartsy title that comes out like I have some kind of inferior taste in games for not really liking Braid (I love the concept and story, but it's not very fun to me, and didn't hold my attention beyond "this is a cool gimmick"; Meanwhile I spent an entire afternoon playing Machinarium, unable to stop) or for thinking that Cave Story is not worth $40 when you could buy it for $10 (this was something I argued about when the 3DS retail game wasn't out yet).

I also do not think MINECRAFT is worth $20 on XBLA. I can't justify paying $20 for what essentially amounts to a virtual LEGO set of THE HATCHET. Especially if it is intangible. But that's just me. I don't want to be spammed with hate over not hiveminding. God forbid.

And a lot of Indie games just aren't that good. Art fart all you want, if it isn't fun, it's a bad game. I appreciate games being 'art', but they are games first and foremost.

Just like I love (and prefer) my games to have good stories and cutscenes and character development, but I am buying a game. I want a fun game.

I really do not care for the anime/manga fandom. However, typically my annoyance with them is not in what they like or how much they like it. It's in their snobbery. Some of them go to a real extreme and begin to hate all Western animation, and me being an appreciator of both Western and Japanese animation I do not like that. This annoyance expands to the obsession with Japan altogether, by the way.

Another major annoyance is the false entitlement of that fandom. They think that they're entitled to have everything free and to their exact expectations. The US companies could not possibly keep up even if they wanted to, it's an unpleasable fandom. You give them what they want, but then they have some little complaint with it, and because of that they won't spend their money on it and keep on going on with their illegal means. I've seen this happen for the sole fact that a character's name was "Zolo" and not "Zoro" (and that particular thing does annoy me, but it's such a minor complaint!).

oh I should have mentioned PC graphic whoring snobs are probably the worst kind of fanboys in my opinion. Seriously guys I do not give a damn about the fact that your £1500 is more powerful PC than the rumoured xbox 720, especially when next to no games are gonna really make use of that extra power.

Agreed.

-Especially as it pertains to video games, and consoles in particular, it is very annoying how fanboys/fangirls have to make it a point to be nasty about what they don't like. I don't mind it if someone loves a certain console and likes to talk/post about it, but that doesn't require attacking other people who may not share the same opinion. General criticism is fine, as in communicating what you do not like about "other" consoles, but don't go overboard.
-In regards to cars/trucks. People who swear by a particular make drive me nuts! I can understand it if you work on your own vehicles and own specialized tools, or have specialized knowledge, of a particular make. However, the notion that one manufacturer is inherently superior to all others is a myth because quality varies between different models, even those produced by the same manufacturer. And opinions about cars/trucks is relative to an individual's needs. This also goes for those people who insist that Americans purchase vehicles from American-owned manufacturers. If those manufacturers produce quality vehicles which meet the needs of people, and purchase prices and financing are not ridiculous, people will buy them. Ford Motor Company, in particular, learned this the hard way 20-30 years ago when they were making low quality products.

I'll be first to admit I'm a fan of many things and I don't pretend to be 'above it all' , but I think what gets on my nerves are fans who insist their position are inscrutable and their opinions are 'facts'.

You saw a lot of this in many places during the Wii/DS era when the goal really is just for the person to air their dislike for the DS hardware for the 100th time, in a discussion that was meant for a DS game and not the hardware.

Fan boys/girls can do what they want, not everyone is going to like everything. I could care less about 95% of the anima out there but it doesn't bother me one bit if people drool over it, more power to them.

What pisses me off are haters who resort to calling people names because they like something that the hater doesn't. To those people I say "Get a life".

Hipster fans of anything:
You know, the stereotypical "I liked it before it was cool" kind of people. I confess I particularly don't care for hipster fans of anything indie. I mean I like indie stuff too, but I hate it when the fans have to be so pretentious about something it ALMOST makes me hate what they like just to spite them. Sure Braid's a fun game, but I'm not going to go on and on about "oh it's so innovative and has such deep meaning to it." No it's not innovative, it's basically like Mario mixed with Prince of Persia (2003), with some Banjo-Kazooie on the side, albeit it does manage to mix them together in a fun way, but it's not anything completely new (a Dorkly Bits video actually highlighted this in a really good way where Tim from Braid acted just like a snooty hipster and Mario pointed out all the ways his game doesn't really do anything brand new).

Continuing with the above, fans who only start to dislike something when a certain person or group takes a liking towards anything they enjoy. For example, I'm a brony. I really enjoy MLP:FiM, as I quite like the animation, the characters, and the fact that the show managed to turn something I never thought I'd enjoy into something I now love to watch. However, it really ticks me off when I read the comments section of stories that involve stuff like "X celebrity admits to liking MLP:FiM," because there will always be comments of someone saying stupid crap like "well it was knowing this fandom while it lasted," and not even joking about it. If you don't like the celebrity/random person, that's fine, but just because they happen to like something that you do is no valid reason to suddenly stop enjoying what you like.

MoldyClay kind of already said this, but I'll say it too: fans who seem to only worship the "creator" of something. Unless we're talking about a literal one person project (like certain indie games), there are typically way more people involved in the creation of something than just the one person who is labeled as the "creator." Now do they deserve praise for coming up with the idea in the first place? Sure, without Miyamoto we wouldn't have had some of the best gaming franchises in the world, and without Lauren Faust "My Little Pony" probably would have continued to just be another "girly" franchise I would have not taken a liking to. What annoys me is when these people are the ONLY ones the fans ever seem to give any credit to, and when it's announced said "creator" won't be working on something they pitch a fit and act like the work is not "ruined forever."
Another MLP example (hey it's pretty relevant), when it was confirmed that Faust would not be directly tied to working on the show after season 1, some fans acted like the world was ending or something. It was all just stupid, because, hello, for one, Faust's only real role in the production of the show was submitting the idea to Hasbro, executive producing (a role that's not even very relevant, because Iwata is credited as an "executive producer" in every Nintendo published game, but he hasn't extensively worked on a game since his HAL Labs days), and writing a total of THREE episodes. The show has writers who have worked on way more episodes, and more creative minds behind it, such as the head producer being the creator of My Life as a Teenage Robot, and storyboard artists who worked on shows like Ed, Edd, n Eddy. Yes she deserves credit for getting the show on the air, but she's hardly the sole reason behind the show's overall quality.

New toy fanboys/girls.
Not sure what else to call them. But essentially they'll claim something is the best thing ever, just because it's brand new or "innovative" and will pull the nostalgia goggles card out at the first chance they get, as if that was actually a legit end all thing to say against someone who happens to like older games. I mean, 90% of all NES and SNES games I played, I waited until I got into highschool to play, or even longer than that, so there is no nostalgia there for me. But still, they refuse to acknowledge any flaws in the new game, and anyone else is just complaining to troll, or nitpick, or some other excuse. I'm not saying there aren't people who are legitimately wearing nostalgia goggles. But more often than not, it's just a knee jerk reaction sputtered out by people who love their new toys so much they can't look past the shiny new paint, and see the shoddy craftsmanship.

Hate the fanboys who explode and harsh on what you like because maybe you said something about their favorite character. I once said Luigi fans who act like the character is still neglected are annoying, because he hasn't missed a game since Sunshine. He says "Yeah? Well guess who's worse? Toad fanboys ( I previously expressed appreciation for the character in the thread ) seriously I can't see what anyone would see in that garbage character." And he said he was "Trolling a troll" and when I said I wasn't trolling He pretty much repeated what I said, insulted gonintendo, and said "But I don't need to throw my opinion in people's faces, which he just did... in other words "Retalliation-prone" fanboys who explode on you even when you didn't say anything all that bad.

MoldyClay wrote:- Anime fangirls and to a lesser extent, fanboys.

Agreed with the first part, especially in the case of "more close to the original " translation crap. ) But the second part is BS.
Yaoi hasn't been exclusive to fangirls for years now, and even if it was, it shouldn't be a deduction. If it's okay to see tons and tons of scantily clad Peach Zelda and Rosalina rolling in the mud, it shouldn't be a crime to see Link and Pit hugging and kissing.

Just people who generally ignore or can't see flaws in their idol's trade irritate me.
They aren't perfect- stop pretending they are!

And this doesn't just apply to video games. Anything with a fanbase has these people. (Prime example: majority of Twilight fans) The ones who tend to follow them religiously and **** on people who dare to disagree with them.
Spiteful, spiteful people.

And last but not least is the know-it-alls. (You who you are, amorphous anonymous blob that is the Internet!)
The ones who shoot down anyone with for example a theory of an upcoming plot and or character development. Y'know? Sniping people with knowledge of intricate details or claim to or know the author of said-piece/art and thus speak on their behalf. OOOooh, that really ticks me off! Screw imagination when you have facts thrown in your face!
(The one I'm thinking of in this case happens to be a mod on the forums of the subject so that's double the pain. Not GoNintendo though, guys)

But when all's said and done I'm certain I have flirted with these traits in the past so maybe that's contributed to my ire but nevertheless... that my two cents.

Honestly, when fans of a series I like a lot are so freaking stupid. Like the Touhou fanbase is just... amazingly awful. They all act like raving morons. I can't stand them. Same with the Vocaloid fanbase and more and more. It's just. Ugh.
Rhythm Game fanatic. DJMax, Taiko no Tatsujin, DDR, Rockband, Guitar Hero, Rhythm Heaven, Beatmania, and Pop n' Music. Amazing.
