I just knew someone was going to do this. What you're looking at is a recreation of a New Super Mario Bros. 2 screenshot in New Super Mario Bros. Wii's fan-made level editor. Can you tell which is which?!

Mario is longer and skinnier in NSMB Wii compared to NSMB 2.

This does make some sense, since all things I've read states that the 3DS is basically the same power as the Wii.

I have no idea what this is saying.

Its been written horribly on purpose. What I'm saying, rather the point I'm making, is that the fact that these two screens look very similar is the reasoning behind why Nintendo would never release a level editor into one of there Mario games. It would make future iterations into the series practically obsolete. Nintendo wants your money :P

Oh please, the fact that these screens look so much alike is pretty telling just how meh the entire NSMB series has become. Get off your high horse. I expect better from Nintendo's flagship franchise and mascot.

So do EA and Activision, and I give them just as much crap for the yearly releases of madden and cod respectively. How can people defend this and trash those games? Nintendo is above this. That's why I love their games more so then any other developer. Still its not like I'm saying don't go buy the game. If you want it that's your prerogative but don't defend what NSMB 2 is (a NSMBWii clone with a shiny sheen glazed over it).

lol , i don't really understand you . The designs and the ideas are what count in a platformer . And nintendo proved to me that they got far more ideas than their competition ( super meat boy , lbp ) . The graphics do require work and are quite good , maybe it's the artstyle you don't like but they are not bad , and nsmbwii especially do have a lot going in the lighting department .
so yeah if they could reach the level of wii with the 3ds , hmm that's quite good .
lbp also proved , and those amateur wii hacks did also , that most people don't have any clue about designs , and it might be possible to enjoy some , but it's so rare . The best one just pile on difficulties and call it a day , that's really not that hard to do . At the end of the day , it's like asking for a level editor for a shoot them up , it's not a good idea .

also it goes without saying but if you truly think that nsmb and other 2d mario platformer are so bad since whatever date , maybe it's time for you to realize that you don't like them and never will . SO move on . Also this applies for the usual routine some have for mario kart and zelda series . It just might be that you never like those series at all , the titles you keep referencing are at least 10 years old now , sometimes 15-20 .

Random Time! - Making New Super Mario Bros. 2 in New Super M

Postby MoldyClay » 25 Apr 2012 22:03

@V3N0M

When I saw the first post I was like "WHAT ARE YOU SAYING? CAN'T TELL IF I AM SUPPOSED TO BE MAD"

Then I saw the other post and was like "OH... OKAY. YES"

Level editors in Mario would render all other Mario games essentially useless other than power-ups.

@FrenchFryGuy

It's more like a flip flop.

When Nintendo is the bad guy everyone's like "WELL DUH GUYS, NINTENDO'S A COMPANY".

When it's about Sony/Microsoft, everyone's like "THEY'RE MONEY GRUBBING AND NINTENDO CARES ABOUT THE FANS"

It depends what's convenient for them.

I myself don't mind the gameplay of NSMB and the star-coing hunting is fantastic for extra replay value but I have to admit that I am bored with the artstyle of it and after playing games like Donkey kong country returns and Kirby's Epic yarn it puts NSMB to shame, they could do a lot more, not just looks but gameplay too.

Yeah maybe I was a bit too harsh on the people that want level editors in Mario games. But that's only because I thought it was so obvious as to why Nintendo would never want to give its players that much creative freedom. I played and own the original NSMB on the DS at it was a great game, but in the context of its release. Back in mid 2000's 2.5 or 2d platformers where not all over the place like they are today. It was great to play a 2d Mario game but with NSMBWii, a lot of 3D land being pseudo 2d scrolling, an upcoming WiiU version of the NSMB franchise, and now this for 3ds. I'm sorry but it all is beginning to really get a bit samey imo. I don't care about a games graphical fidelity or genre oversaturation, but I can't stand samey. Right now that's what the NSMB franchise feels to me. I'd much rather have had them announce a DK country for the 3DSand let WiiU get the Mario game.

Random Time! - Making New Super Mario Bros. 2 in New Super M

Postby MoldyClay » 26 Apr 2012 02:38

@V3N0M

Oh, by "YES" I meant "I AGREE".

I'd love a Mario level editor, but to be honest, I'd not know what to do with it and just make other Mario levels, other platformer levels, or levels that were stupid and not very fun to play.

I'm totally with you.

I can't stand NSMB style and this kind of stuff is why. It all looks the same. The music is terrible, the style is bland and they all have little to no differences.

Compare SMB1-2-3 and World (using SMB USA as SMB2). They're all completely different looking. You can tell them apart right away.

The differences between the NSMB games are minor at a glance. You can tell if you're LOOKING for what is different, but if you just look at them, it's blah.

I know the game will be fun, but the series is mediocre overall so far (too easy or too generous and doesn't even do what it sets out to, just like Sonic 4 didn't).

And if NSMB Mii actually comes out, then that's stupid, unless it is a pack-in game or does something AMAZING besides "LOL MII AND YOU CAN PLAY ON ANOTHER SCREEN".

Defending this is blatant fanboy-ism. The fact that other companies whore out their franchises does not give Nintendo a free pass on this, because we should hold them to higher standards.

The only reason they are making this (actually, two of these fully priced level packs) and not something COMPLETELY brand new with a new engine, artstyle, and game mechanics, is because they think that enough people will buy it to be worth the relatively small costs incurred.

Prove. Them. Wrong. I know it's Nintendo but you are hurting yourself in the future if you allow them to get away with these kind of things. If that happens you can expect a lot more rehashes for a lot more of your favorite franchises.

Be careful, your common sense doesn't belong here.

Edit: I understand the excitement behind those who genuinely enjoy the games, rehashes and all, but Nintendo is doing to Mario what the Pokemon games have been doing generation after generation - minimal changes from one game to the next but they still sell like crazy. It's the brand that sells now more than the quality of the games. :(
