Nintendo on working with retail to offer digital download codes for digital/retail titles
Click Here to View Story

Our consumers can visit retail outlets or the retailers’ online shopping sites, look for products of interest, make a purchase decision and actually pay for the product there. The retailers then can issue the 16-digit software exchange code. As you can see on the screen now, consumers can enter the 16-digit code at the Nintendo eShop to download the software.

Some may wonder why we are adding this kind of process, as it may seem more complicated. However, for the majority of our consumers, this is a familiar process as they are already accustomed to making payments at the retail outlets, and it can lower their psychological barrier to making online purchases. Some consumers are hesitant in purchasing digital download software because they are concerned about inputting their credit card numbers. Also, payments by credit cards or cell phones are unavailable to some people under a certain age. Accordingly, offering a familiar payment method should lower the hurdle for our consumers to purchase digital download software.

Nintendo on working with retail to offer digital download co

Postby LegendofSantiago » 26 Apr 2012 22:00

I would love to have Animal crossing on my system instead of a cartridge. Things like that, Super smash, mario kart, etc would be awesome. Games that i would like to play every once in a while so i don't need to carry the cartridge around. I could also see the "download later" option being very good for this. You want to download a big game? put it on sleep mode and go to sleep. The next day it's on your system. I'm not too sure how i feel about the pricing though, hoped it would be a bit cheaper

Hopefuly this means they will put in gifting.

I'd like to see companies throw in eshop or vc titles as bonuses for buying new. buy the new mega man game? get a code for X, X2 and X3 on the VC or something. would be tits.

I probably won't use this. I want to save space on my SD card so I have more room for eshop titles.

call me old fashioned, but i like having a box and booklet. besides looking all snazzy on my shelf it gives me the option to trade up, later on, at a shop or sell on amazon.

So what about those of us who are used to buying stuff online?

Do I have to go to BestBuy and buy a code, go home, and then donwload the game? Why can't I just buy the game directly from the eShop???

One step forward, five steps back.

@t27duck
You can do both actually. This is only one of the possibilities... Yes, you can buy it on the eShop without going to a retailer... it's only there for kids and fearful people that can't buy online..
Shy Guy? How did I return to that?? I was a Koopa? ... AWESOME!

@Elfteiroh

I'm yet to see anything tonight that even hints at Nintendo letting me download NSMB 2 directly via the eShop.

EDIT: Nevermind. Found it. It was a very subtle oneliner buried in the mess of explaining what the 16 digit code is for.

Yeah, it's pretty subtle, I'm not surprised one could gloss over it. :O

that's how nintendo rolls. a lot of the talk I'm seeing right now thinks the same thing, that digital copies will only be available at retail.

and yea, they are doing 1 step forward 4 steps back. no account system, no real storage on the wiiu, I have to choose physical OR digital (when it should be steamworks style), still tying everything to the hardware, it's sad.

I know that, I'm saying what I'm seeing on the internets. Nintendo not making their message clear? why that's never happened before.

Okay, I see their logic in having people buy the 16 digit code, but if you go to a retail store, wouldn't you just buy the game there...physically?

And if you keep downloading full retail games to your SD card, you better have a 32GB!

But it is clear. It's as plain as day. I'm guessing they're just a bunch of people who are ready to be outraged at the drop of a hat so they aren't clearly reading what is actually being said.

As long as this is just a third option next to retail game purchases and full downloadable games, it doesn't bother me. Every other form of entertainment's made the jump to digital download. Why not games? And although it's good to have all 3 options, the less game cards and game discs I have to change the better :P.

That is pretty awesome that they are making it so you can download the games, that means you can bring more games with you when you go places.
