A lot of it has to do with the system's resolution. 400x240 images don't exactly take up very much room.

I'm still surprised to see NSMBW doesn't even reach 400MB. I'd think for sure the game would've at least reach 800MB, even 1GB.

I never knew New Super Mario Bros. Wii is smaller than every 3ds game up there. (except for 3d land)

from what? levels don't take up much space, the art is all low res and highly compressible, no big HD fmv movies, no uncompressed 5.1 audio.

I'm more surprised at Pikmin. It's a 2 gig port of a game that was on a 1.5GB disk.

I'll bet they put the assets on the dvd uncompressed.

Kind of embarrassing that NSMBW isn't even as big as Wii Sports. I mean, obviously it's still a great game, but looking at the numbers like that... eek.

This. I love both Wii Sports and Kid Icarus, but I have no idea how KI is only three times the size.

Another look at 3DS and Wii game sizes

And I though that either Brawl or Other M would be at the top, it is Metroid Prime Trilogy the heaviest one. I would have liked to see Corruption alone to compare. And this list doesnt include third party games it seems.

Ofcourse, with the massive size of the new discs for WiiU and the capacity to have higher res textures than current gen, I expect most first games to be above or near those 7 gigs most of the time (except for NSMB games). Third party may take a lot more depending the game.

If Nintendo wants to push DD, the Wii U needs USB 3.0 over 2.0.

So... you can't compress SMB, a not-very-long, fully 2D game with repeatedly reused textures into 40MB... but you can compress SM3DL, a quite long, fully 3D game with better quality music into 310MB?

Not to even mention the eShop's been around for 14 months with no size restrictions.

Embarrassing? NSMBW is smaller than Wii Sports because Wii Sports is a fully 3D rendered game where as NSMBW is a 2.5D game with less polygons to render. 2D games are going to be smaller than fully 3D games 9 times out of 10.

It used an 8GB disc but it didn't fill the whole disc.

Usually the unused space becomes padding to help the game load faster.

Another look at 3DS and Wii game sizes

Postby MoldyClay » 28 Apr 2012 02:24

@DeMatador

How do we know there's no size restrictions?

And yeah. The music and the fact that despite it not looking it, apparently there are tons of individual textures for everything in SMB.

Also, we're talking compressing a 300MB game into 40MB.

Super Mario 3D Land was *made* into 310MB. They didn't condense anything into that size. That comparison doesn't make sense.

It's also no unusual for a fully 3D game to be so small. 300MB is a lot for a 2D game like that.

And look at Epic Yarn, that game is all 2D stuff and it's like 2-3GB (which blew my mind). It doesn't really have to make sense.

Also, not-that-long my ass. There's 100+ standard levels, 20 Bandage Girl stages, Dark World versions of *all* of those and 20 warp zones with 3 parts.

But yeah.

Rayman Origins, or Epic Yarn I guess since Rayman has some 3D elements to it

I mean I'm sure a really good looking 2D Mario game would be pretty hefty. But the way things are looking I'll probably be pretty aged before Nintendo feels any pressure to up 2D Mario's presentation. It's not like I can complain about the end product not being fun or anything but it's the flagship series of one of the biggest most capable game developers in the world. you'd think they wouldn't have to trade style for recognizability and simplicity.
