so, apparently sony is jonesin for some of that sweet sweet smash bros pie! via game trailers, sony announced an essentially smash bros clone featuring all of their wonderful, timeless characters.. like, shaved head guy, other shaved head guy, overweight princess lady and... the rest! its... kinda sad, really. not to sell ratchet and clank, jak and daxter, drake or kratos short.. and it was neat seeing parappa the rapper.. this is just shameless.. sony's characters lack pathos and cultural relevance that is required to make this mash up work.. this is all just opinion of course.. who knows, i could be wrong... but it just doesnt look good

 This looks like an exact copy of Smash Bros with Sony characters. Couldn't they have at least made it a little different? This is even more of a straight rip off than the Move controller. It's actually surprising it took Sony this long to rip off Smash Bros. I love how the interviewer is acting like this is such an original awesome idea that no one has ever come up with before. But I agree that Sony just doesn't have the recognizable classic characters to make this the big hit Smash Bros is. And who the hell is Fat Princess?

I'm disappointed it's a clone, and I also don't think Sony's characters are as fun to see as Nintendo's in this kind of brawler. Watching Kratos beat the shovel out of someone is just not as novel as watching a Charizard smashing Princess Peach in the face. Still, it sounds well made. So if it's fun I might pick it up. Just not feeling any hype for it at the moment.

This could be a good game, clone or not. I just hope that the creators of Super SMash Bros. Wii U/3DS take notice, and put forth great effort.

I know everyone's knee-jerk reaction to this is to get mad and declare it as a rip-off, but maybe we shouldn't be too hasty. Yes, make no mistake, this is a blatant rip-off of Super Smash Bros. but look at it this way: Nintendo created a new genre of fighting game. Much like Mario Kart created a new genre of racing game (Diddy Kong Racing, Crash Team Racing, Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing to name a few), with games like Shonen Jump All-Stars, Cartoon Network: Punch Time Explosion, and now PlayStation All-Stars To The Rescue it's clear that Nintendo tapped into a new style of fighting game just like Street Fighter II did all those years ago. Maybe these games won't reach the level of quality of Smash Bros. (god knows Cartoon Network didn't) but, if I were Nintendo, I'd be pretty damn proud about seeing these companies make games like this and thinking "We did this first."

There was another franchise-fighter like Smash called DreamMix Tv World Fighters, it was for Sony and GameCube.

Oh, it is a little bit funny. At least I find it amusing how Sony always says Nintendo stuff is crap and just gimmicks and only for kids, then they are forced to make exact copies of it later and have to act like it's the most awesome original thing the world has seen.

I'd go so far as to say if it is a clone it WILL be a good game. And really I'm ok with that. If what the debut states was true, and they are getting a lot of input from competative players to make this game then let the competative players who whine all the time go play that game and leave Sakurai to do his thing. What I don't like is people, like douche Keiley on the show, acting so suprised and blown away by all the stuff being shown...yeah like NONE of this has ever been done before..nooot at aaaaaaaaaaaaaaall. What a fraud. This is why spike and gametrailers and g4 are so mind numbling aggrivating to watch. They just ooz bias and shamlessly pander to dudebro demographics to boost ratings. I haven't watched full gameplay of a match, but it seems like it's going to be tiring in the long run...

as much as its become cliched to complain about this kind of thing... i have to agree with you. cliched or not.. truth is truth..

the more and more i read and see about this title.. the less... interested?, i get. the picture posted a few messages above is exactly why. its just.. too similar. its one thing when its third parties making similar games but when its sony, i dont know.. it feels.. hollow. its also kind of mind blowing how every site i find reporting on this makes it sound fresh and exciting. they will add a throw away comment about it taking some ideas from smash bros, but lets call a spade a spade. sony thought nintendo looked pretty good in a pair of jeans so they went out and bought the same exact pair. though, im sure, they will try and pretend they never even noticed nintendo wearing them.

by the way, due to mentioning the words "spade" and "jeans" in the same paragraph im instantly reminded of the "gap girls" sketch from snl from the early 90's.. and like that.. all of my annoyance is washed away by nostalgic memories

The funniest thing about this whole nonsense, is that no one official so far that I've seen, has even pointed OUT just how eye-stabbing obvious of a Smash Bros. ripoff this game is. Sony didn't even mention SB as an inspiration, and GameTrailers didn't mention the similarity either, for example.

Exact same kind of fighting system? Check. Exact same kind of compact, 2D platformer style stages? Check. Will characters have their own unique "Final Smash" type ability? I'm sure they will. And people will talk about it as if it's new and innovative, just like they did with Move.

If I was in charge of development, I'd make sure they add all the Sony consoles as stages, similar to how there's a Game & Watch stage in Brawl. The PS2 level would just give a DRE halfway through, and the PS3 level would be blank because PS3 has no games.

There have been other Smash Bros.-like games on the market for years. Just recently, there was a Cartoon Network game that played similarly. There's also a Battle Stadium D.O.N., Viewtiful Joe Red Hot Rumble, Onimusha: Blade Warriors, the Digimon Battle Arena series, DreamMix TV World Fighters, and many more.

This game is only get this much attention because it's Sony.

Well for one thing, none of those other games have actually been all that good.

And for another, that's precisely the point. It's one thing for a third party dev to "borrow" an idea like this. If Ubisoft had tried harder, the TMNT game on Wii could have been really good. But this is Sony. They and Microsoft both act as if Nintenod's innovations are "meh", even though they steal them constantly. Then they turn around after blatantly ripping off the Wiimote and Nunchuck concept, and make a game that is almost exactly a carbon copy of Smash Bros.

All I'm saying is, you don't see Nintendo directly ripping off anyone else, really. Hell, back in their console making days, you never even really saw Sega do that either. But hey, I know, Sony and M$ have no shame. Never have.

the funny thing about this game is that it makes me look forward to the smash bros, even more. probably not the desired effect...

what i cant wait to see, is what other aspects of the game will they copy in paste. an adventure mode that ties all of the characters into one story? assist trophies? collectible trophies? judging by a video i saw involving the fat princess, it looks like smash attack type abilities are there. collectible songs?

and i have to say, im pretty much sick and tired of seeing kratos. maybe its because im not a fan of over the top aggro misogynistic game characters. any character that you are supposed to feel sympathy for because he loses his family (at his own hand) but then later on has minigame fueled orgies.. is just weak. (and that has been another exciting episode of "kernal's pointless rants". who am i? andy rooney?)

I agree about seeing too much Kratos. He's been around the block more than the women he sleeps with.

But to be honest, I think this game is missing the point of what makes Smash Bros., in fact, Smash Bros.

A - The "question" of who'd win in a fight, X or Y. This is the big one in my eyes. People argue whether or not Sony franchises are important as Nintendo franchises or not, but that's not really the question they should be asking. People don't care about who'd win in a fight between Sony franchises.

B - The gameplay. Smash Bros. prides itself on "Easy to Play, Hard to Master." This game is being made to cater more towards the fighting game crowd, and because of that, the barrier to entry will be much higher since every character is going to have different button and input commands, where as Smash Bros. it's just A/B Plus Direction.

C - The name. Playstation All-Stars would've sufficed. But adding the Battle Royale part at the end. Horrible. HORRIBLE. Simpler is better in naming franchises.

One can only hope the game will be more geared towards competitive fighting game crowds, that way they can finally shut up about Sakurai, and trippin, and random item spawn, and all the other complete chaos and zany craziness that goes on in normal a game of smash, ya know, the stuff that was the allure for such a game in the first place. Me thinks this is only a good thing if it satiates the haters that demand "balance" and "order" in a freakin party game. And make no mistake the Smash series has always been just that mainly for reason A in your comment. Sure it has its fighting game elements but I'd argue it still has more in-common with platformers due to the level of control over your character and the basicist of inputs needed to pull of combat in the game. I look forward to this games release if not only to see the issue settled on which direction the franchise should go. If this game turns out to be a colossal failure do to its higher level of entry and focus on competitive combat over fun and casual play then maybe those who always b****ed about brawl can finally see why Sakurai wished to go in that direction in the first place, and give the man his proper respect as a game designer, who properly puts fun and enjoyment of a game on the basicist of levels over complex inputs, "balanced" roster and "proper" stage and item design placement.

You completely missed my point. It's from a sales perspective, and it ultimately means this is going to be a disaster. By making COMMANDS (Which is what I'm talking about) geared more towards a fighting game, you're going to confuse your audience very quickly. This is going to lead to a lot of second-hand sales and a lot of unhappy customers and businessmen.

as for point C... having a subtitle separated by a colon was discovered by research groups to have a greater impact on sales. but i agree, all these subtitles in games are totally unnecessary and often just feel clunky or cheesy.

i think the game looks kind of generic to be honest. it's not finished of course, but both the levels and characters don't seem to really stand out in any way. maybe it's because most of the characters don't have very unique worlds/environments to show off and aren't instantly recognizable; maybe it's that so many of the levels we've seen look more or less the same..especially with the same couple giant monsters/characters in the background.

if it controls well, i'd give it a try. if it's too hardcore, i probably won't get much out of it. i like fighting games, but not to the point i can frame count--or even want to learn.

I'd just as soon buy a Sega branded Smash Bros. ripoff. At least with THAT, much like the Sega All-Stars Racing, you know you'd get some good stages and characters.
