Its a Dev Kit.

I know that already, and I think journos do too but this too good of a chance to pass for them.

One thing I thought of was that these downloadable games will take up a large amount of space, but the console only comes with 8GB of storage.

So... they're forcing you expand the storage capacity of the Wii U if you want to download one game? Given the big push that Nintendo is giving downloadable retail games, that doesn't make any sense. Or maybe the 8GB is only part of the story.

Here's some ideas I've cooked up

- They're going for a multiple SKU approach like the 360 and 8GB is the cheapest model
- They're going to implement cloud storage or maybe some sort of streaming gaming (unlikely)
- They really are going to go back and change up the Wii U and add in a decent sized HD (200 GB and up for a conservative guess)
- The 8GB of storage is on board and they're including a SD card (16 GB cards cost $15, 32 GB cards are twice that)

For the non-hardcore consumers, 16 gbs onboard should be more than enough even if they download NSMBMii, how big could that game be? It could fit in a normal or dual layer dvd perhaps.

I doubt the Wii U will have multiple SKU's. This would confuse consumers. I think Nintendo will offer officially licensed HDD's though.

And remember, Wii U games will be on 30gb discs. Although some games won't need all of that space.

I have to wonder who's more angry about the Rayman LegendZ leak, Ubisoft or Nintendo. I'd imagine Nintendo because it shows off the NFC feature which hasn't been shown yet.

Ubisoft is already being sued, by the owners of the placeholder music they used in the leak trailer

nsmb? I'd be surprised if it's over 200MB. Depending on how awesome or stupid they do their online this go round, I'll either be using my spare 250GB hard drive, or buying a 2+ TB one.

True, but even though games won't need all that space, 8GB isn't much room for retail games, Profiles, DLC, save games, and WiiShop games.

Multiple SKU's seemed to work ok for Microsoft and Sony, but I could be wrong about that.

My best guess would be that Nintendo will have only one SKU, but with greater storage than 8 GB. This could be through a hard drive, memory card, or more flash storage than 8GB (I think that the 8GB is flash).

yea, I think if they want to go balls out with digital, they will have to put a HD in the box at some point. I mean, if they want the sweet, sweet digital margins (which is why they are doing this, can you imagine if they were getting 100% of the retail price on the sales of NSMBwii? I'll give you a hint, the amount of those revenues starts with a B.)

I think the lack of or inclusion of a HDD in the box will be pretty telling on the level of commitment nintendo has to the digital space. Actions speak louder than words.

From the land where most rumors come from

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.ph ... ount=14601

wired controller in dev kit rumor

weird

Really weird, it's conflicting with what i've heard. I'm pretty sure the dev kits, maybe at least from revision 3 (and more surely for revision 4), have the option to switch between wired and wireless mode. Now, maybe the DRC weren't wireless until a few months, but even then, it should be the case now. I could be wrong though, perhaps the dev kits themselves are ready for wireless communication with the DRC, but the DRC prototypes in possession of third-parties aren't.

Yeah, seems strange. Maybe their sources are smaller/ less important studios and really won't get the newer pads for a while. The latest pad (product id DK-DEV-V5) is wireless. Also looks like Nintendo uses Ni-Fi for the controller now (2.4 or 5GHz), so range shouldn't be limited to a single room - possibly not even just a single floor.

ni-fi is a fan-coined term for nintendo's propietary wi-fi comunication between devices. It is explained further in that topic.

The NFC Street Pass Card. Here's an idea: Link it with my 3DS so I can share data. BRILLIANT!

But I guess having a unified NiN Account with Wii U and 3DS isn't a priority at the moment. I'm sure it will be, though.

Anyone else not too enthusiastic about the NFC figurine proliferation that is going to happen when WiiU releases? I mean, I don't care if it's there, you don't have to support it. I am just afraid that a game will release that will make me start buying figurines (Marvel Heroes, Fire Emblem, oh boy...). Not good. I am trying to get rid of junk, lol, not get more! :)

Yeah, I'm not too ecstatic about having figurines pile up to be used in games. The one thing that I like about the approach is that it's the "physical" approach to DLC. So let's say you have an NFC item that allows you to play an extra level, when you take it to your friends house they'll be able to play the level too. I think that's pretty neat. It solves the whole "I don't own the DLC!" issue.

When you put it that way, that is a really cool way to push the positive aspect of it, and is something I didn't think about. Awesome! My nephew loved Skylanders, but once he finished it, his interest waned, and all those figures just sit around. But, sharing the DLC is an aspect of this form of entertainment that I did not think of at all.

I just have to be wary of DLC in general, as I tend to cave on those games I really enjoy.

Something else to think of, is what if they release GOTY editions, and have content that wasn't in the original, and release new figures with the collection, both in the box with the GOTY edition, and new figurines? Oh my...

Sounds like third parties will also be allowed to offer their games both in retail or digital forms

Nothing groundbreaking, but nice to have a reasurance of it (if this pr guy is real and correct).

Suddenly, the wierd e-shop rumor from dualpixels gains just a bit of credibility IMO.

I dont want to give them extra hits yet, but basically it was a crazy list of third and first party games available on e-shop (WoW, CS:GO, DotA2, Mario Strikers, RE Mercenaries: bio ops, etc)
The list is already very optimistic, but the mention of being e-shop games was interesting (why especificaly mention e-shop?). Now we know full retail games will be offered digitaly, even third party ones. Coincidence, or there was something real on that rumor? :?
