Sexuality Used in Ads

Postby beastmaster100 » 23 May 2008 16:54

Do you guys think this has gone too far?

I definitely am against this. For example, the axe cologne commercials where the clothes (except the undergarments) get blown off of the people. I think there should definitely be a limit on this. There have also been beer commercials where a man opens a beer and a girl comes up to him and says let's go have some fun and they leave the bar. Now I believe that that particular commercial was cancelled but there are others. Like the Viagra commercials. It is completely legitimate to advertise a pill for men with ED who need it, but when sexuality like that is involved then I believe it has gone too far.

There was also a video I saw on youtube that escapes me now but it has views of people at work.

I am just curious what everyone thinks. Also with this topic please try to be mature so that this topic doesn't get locked. Thank you.

yeah.. it's not particularly necessary in most cases, and obviously advertisers are limited by standards and ratings, but some people are still sensitive to things for whatever reason.

in the case of Axe, their products really have no purpose, and the most relevant selling point actually IS in a sexual sort of context. plus, their targeted demographics are going to be most interested in using their products for the same reasons that the company advertises. go figure.. it's an actual match, however ridiculous it might be.

it is interesting to see how different countries have different cultural standards about what is or is not acceptable.. how nudity and cursing is found in some european ads, but would never, ever be found in the US.

Ya well welcome to the future. i'm amazed at the number of stupid people that fall for these adds. i mean wouldn't one think that the modern world would be smarter than that. Seriously damn Mcdonalds and there fking big macs and there stupid commercials that talk about health and all those random commercials (yes including nintendos) with shiny people smiling to death. sorry about the offensive words but yes thats how much i hate those things and what they do to people, luring them in, all people think about is money.

That one Paris Hilton Carl's Jr. commercial was hot. I liked it, but my parents didn't like it. My parents wont go to Carl's Jr. ever again because of that commercial. So maybe sexuality in ads is not necessary because it will offend most people.
thats what she said

Usually it doesn't offend me or put me off a product. I think its sad though that companies feel the need to incorperate such content because that's 'what sells'.

Atm though I'm more angry with stupid furniture adverts. If I see another DFS or CSL advert I'm serious - heads will be rolling! I counted three of the same ad in one break. Its brainwashing.

Haha so true so true. Here in Norway, people tend to think americans are dumb, violence/gun lovers :P of course, I know better ;)

I think as long as they don't show these commercials before 21:00 they're good to go. Why after 21:00? to avoid uncomfortable situations where small children who doesn't know any better asks, "why is that boy licking that girl's boobs?" or similar. Besides, do we want 8 year olds "trying out" what they just saw on that commercial with their friends?

This is why the world is screwing ourselves over...... i hate it. i wish companies would all do things for the people not for their pocket....

but on the topic of sexuality in ads...it is getting way out of hand...i totally agree with the axe and tag commercials. some of them are funny but that one with the blowing off the clothes to reveal underwear....what if your little sibling was watching that or something. soon enough there is going to be naked people allowed in commercials..

what pissed me off though is how some channels allow girls gone wild commercials to start airing at like 10 pm. yeah i live in the central time zone....but that still is a little early. what if some kid who is staying up late on a summer night is flipping through channels and happens to find that commercial....that just is wrong.

I am against extreme forms of it. Obviously, if you are advertising a mint or minty gum, a girl kissin the guy chewing the gum or mint is an obvious advertisement. On the other hand, if a guy wears a certain type of cologne and suddenly hundreds of bikini-clad woman chase after him, that is just too much.
I don't mind most ED commercials because they show sex in a "classy" manor. In other words, they don't have woman throwing themselves at the man because he took this pill.
I do not believe the "male enhancement" pills should be advertised on tv though. For example, has any here seen the commercial with "Bob" (aka: they really creepy guy that never stops smiling)? I think those commercials are very over-the-top.

My favorite word is balance. Everything in life needs it, including sexuality in ads. If the product calls for some sexuality, fine, just don't overdo it. For example, if you want to advertise a new cologne, use an ad where the cologne attracts entices a woman to talk to the man, but don't say that the woman immediately wants to sleep with this man because of his cologne. It is way to over-the-top and unneeded.

The truth is the worlds adult age standard ( 16, 18, 20) is what affects various ad's by mans law. Sex is childish thing and only could be enjoyed in youth. These advertments is made for people to reminise of there past exprience or who has never had these exprience.

Personally the people in these advertments looks like grannies to me with there ugly hangara breasts, and low nipples ( even on men ), along with there but ugly faces. I prefer veal of spoiled goods.

Again sex is a youthfull thing and these ads trigger memory and lust for the subject

Cant say completely antisocial. But considering the fact that children are the ones, mostly into games, probability of gaming media to influence them is high. So we have to reconsider and revisit the rules regarding them.

For the most part, it's just useless. I'm never excited or anything when I've seen a commercial or heard a voice on the radio; mostly I just change the channel or station. It seems more like desperate advertising than being clever. I'm sure it works on some people; I remember being a sophomore in High School and even buying a can of Axe after seeing the commercial where the girls go crazy over the guy's smell, but you quickly realize it stinks and that no girl really cares that much about cologne.

So in short, I could do without it.

I dont see anything wrong if its humurous like the Axe commercials, but when theres that Paris Hilton burger commercial thats just way too far. I personally am not really offended by it but there are so many kids that dont need to be exposed to that kind of stuff at their age...

In some ads in is just unnecessary, like the recent (I think) Levi ads: The people in the commercials seem to be inclined to take their Levis off...because Levis are just that good... I guess.
Does anyone think that the recent Subway, "Five-Dollar Footlong" Commercials have some sexuall symbollism to them?
