So this is the port on the controller itself I'm assuming.

Wii U patent reveals Wii U controller port design

Yeah, I'm not understanding the point of this port. Is it so that the controller can charge or something?

Charging is a good bet, but there is also rumored to be some kind of surprise about the controller, so...

Wii U patent reveals Wii U controller port design

I hope if it does have an option to connect the cord to the controller, then it will also have a breakaway lock mechanism so the whole console doesn't get pulled if it's yanked or tripped over.

I don't think it will have the cord option. Were in the wireless age, so Nintendo will keep it wireless.

...what's the point of disallowing the player to use the controller while it's being charged?

Nobody is saying that. The charging cord will likely not be attached to the Wii U itself but rather to a plug-in adapter.

Looks big enough for a memory card... Wishful thinking, but I'm betting on charging port

Image Wanting this was my initial request for it's wired design if It was able to be attached to the console so it can't be pulled down from the controller or by an outside force. I don't know what your talking about when you say what's the point of disallowing the player to use the controller while it's being charged? You must've read it wrong if you're referring to me.

Wii U patent reveals Wii U controller port design

Postby Mirr0rR3flection » 08 May 2012 17:50

I hate wireless now since it requires me to charge my Wiimotes. I'm glad I can still use GCN controllers on my Wii but what the hell will I do when the Wii"U" comes around?¿? Nintendo you had better find me a solution.

Wii U patent reveals Wii U controller port design

Too many pins for just charging, they would only need 2 pins. might be some kind of data transfer as well. Maybe to hook up to a computer or to hook up other accessories like the gun so it can sync with the wii remote.

Is that a charging cradle or just a stand?

About that port, it could be any number of things but doesn't that Rayman trailer show a cord hooked up to it?

Wii U patent reveals Wii U controller port design

That charging cradle/stand will work through two contacts under the controller. You can see the contacts on the charger marked 213a and 213b. Exact same way as how the 3DS charging cradle works (as well as many other charging cradle things).

So the port here isn't for this. It could be used to charge + play at the same time via a wire (think about the 3DS again with how it uses its charging port to charge with the wire, but not when using the charging cradle), but I'm betting even if it could do that (I have my doubts unfortunately, but at least if you can't play + charge at the same time its battery should last long enough to play as much as you want in one go, otherwise nintendo will end up with people complaining all the time that they can't even use the new controller, which would be a huge problem obviously, something I doubt someone like nintendo would overlook). I'd say it's more for extensions, like how the wii controller works (remember that wii U zapper we've seen)

@hawthorneluke

212 is the charging prongs. Those look more like rubber bumpers.
