Sakurai has no intentions of making a Kid Icarus: Uprising sequel

“If by ‘lasting universe’ you mean to ask if there's a sequel, the answer is no because we pushed a lot into the game in order to let people have this short yet deep experience, but the novelty of that would likely grow thin in the next game. For now, my thought is that perhaps we'll see someone else besides me make another Kid Icarus in another 25 years.” - Masahiro Sakurai

That's a true shame! Sakurai did some amazing things in Kid Icarus: Uprising, all of which made me very excited for a sequel in the future. One of my favorite aspects came from the way Sakurai updated the original while still keeping sight of where the series started.

“No matter how much you change a game's genre and whatnot for the times, I think it's vital you never lose your respect for the original game. With the first Kid Icarus, it's not a serious adventure - it has a more humorous bent to it, one you don't see in the original Legend of Zelda and Metroid that came out that generation. To embody that in a modern style, we made efforts not to have it seem like a run-of-the-mill battle - the story flow is really daring and unfolds in crazy ways that don't pay too much attention to the setting.”

Sakurai also addressed the comedic nature of the script, when asked about how the NA and Japanese versions differed.

“The Japanese version is definitely very comedic too. It's something that takes advantage of the nuances of Japanese conversation, and not all of it works directly in English. We had NOA handle the localization, and I told them to change the meaning and content as much as they want - that I wanted conversations that sound natural and enjoyable to a native speaker.”

@player value It's great. If you can get over the controls (which i did after the second stage) you should enjoy it. If you have a 3DS it's at least worth a look

I personally love the game. It's so easy for me to control now (really only took 2 levels to get used to them), the graphics are great, the gameplay is fantastic, the story and dialogue are some of the best I've encountered in all of gaming, let alone handheld gaming; and the entire product feels like a love letter to a game that most people haven't played.

it's games like Kid Icarus: Uprising that remind me why I took up this hobby so many years ago.

Even if he wanted to make a sequel, Nintendo probably won't allow it. The game is going to be a loss for them. And thats all the excuse Nintendo needs to throw the series in the vault for a few decades.

Oh well, not like I got to play the new one anyway.

I am more disappointed at the thought that there still isn't Kid Icarus game on a console after all these years.

I'd like a more adventure style game from Retro, given the Metroid feel of the original, but I am not holding my breath.

I don't see your point, are others echoing this sentiment? Even so, does that make it not true? Nintendo spent a lot on this game, and there is no way they will see a return.

I have to say, I wasn't expecting this game to be especially great. I thought it would just be a linear and kinda shallow game like StarFox 64, but it turned out to be filled with content and actually likeable characters! The humour also turned out much better in the game than what I thought by seeing the trailers! It is my current favourite 3DS game, and I didn't think little of SM3DL and MK7!

I'm impressed by how good the translation turned out, it looks like it was written in English first. I don't know how much the dialog varies in Japanese, but I've heard the Japanese voices, and they didn't sound too great compared to the English ones...

@LegendofSantiago @nGen @Jirachi
Thanks for your opinions. I did not really like the original (i still don't get the hype around it), enjoyed the Game Boy version a lot better, so i think i'm going to pick it after all... when i'm done with Pandora's Tower and The Last Story. :)

This isn't the first place you've posted "Nintendo will lose money on Kid Icarus: Uprising." You keep beating that dead horse. I would like you to prove it. Show me facts. Show me figures. Show me anything that denotes Nintendo turning a loss for a game that has sold more than 600k copies so far and may pass 1 million by Christmas.

@player value I didn't like the first KI game either but this is something special. I do advise wearing headphones though. The music and the dialogue is fantastic (especially if you liked the dialogue from star fox)

He could make a sequel, just fix the control scheme... But, like with mostly everything I guess it will really depend on sales figures.

He really tried to be way too over the top with this game, to the point of ridiculousness ( Mechas. And Space stations. God. Damn. ). I'm not surprised he doesn't think he can make a sequel. Personally I'd rather someone else handle the series.

The only thing I really want to keep from this game is the humor, and maybe air battles. I would rather the land battles be more akin to the original game ( WITH NEW STUFF ADDED for those of you thinking I want "A fresh coat of paint" ), and just dump all those weird weapons, Sci-Fi elements, and anime OCs.

Bringing it up twice counts as beating a dead horse? Ok whatever. You want some facts here are some obvious facts.

1) The AR cards. Designing, printing, cutting, marketing (the foil packagings), ect. I have worked in for a printing company, I know how much this stuff costs even in mass production this stuff adds up! Maybe 25 cents a card.

2) The animated short films, animation is expensive. Theres really nothing else to say on that.

3) The stand, even if the stand has 10 cents worth of plastic in it. At your 600k in sales (which you shared without proof BTW) would cost oh, $60 grand. Not to mention all the copies sitting on store shelves.

4) production delays, the game was pushed back almost a year from its original release window, thats another WHOLE year that Nintendo had to pay their production team to make the game. And if your new to this site, go back and look up ANY of the articles about the rising cost of game development.

Don't be dense, this stuff adds up.

Yeah headphones are a must. And I'm glad that they're not going to make Kid Icarus into a cash cow franchise, it would get old really quickly, what made KI:U so much fun was how unique and different it was. Though 25 years in between installments is a little much...

Anyways I've learned to ignore "controls don't work" in reviews now. I mean Metroid Other M, Skyward Sword and Kid Icarus Uprising all control GREAT in my opinion. Oh well maybe I'm just gifted.
