It doesn't matter how the DS did in it's first year; what matters is that the original DS is now THE BEST-SELLING CONSOLE OF ALL TIME. If the 3DS is beating the best-selling console of all time... then it will eventually BE the best-selling console of all time. Duh!
Still doomed though...
3.8 million units in one year was not "best selling game system of all time" numbers. It was "omg this system is going to fail because it only has one game even worth playing" numbers. 3DS is doing okay, but it's not showing the promise of the DS line yet at all. It was still outsold by the DS this past year. A 7 year old platform.
And at 150 million units sold, that's an average of like 20 million DS's sold per year. 3DS has done 4 million in a year so far, and launch years are supposed to be a good thing.
I don't doubt the 3DS will report better sales in its second year, but I don't think it's ever going to hit the same stride as the DS. I'll be surprised if it sells more than 10 million new systems next year. It'll take a new 3DS-only standard Pokemon game to beat that number.
