If you have a thumb that constantly slips off the 3DS Circle Pad, it seems that Nintendo might have a solution for you. As you can see in the image above, Nintendo has filed a patent for a Circle Pad that is a bit closer to the GameCube's analog stick. Add in a few ridges for grip and things should become a lot less slippery. No word on whether Nintendo will actually make this change to the 3DS Circle Pad or not.

Nintendo patent shows slight redesign of 3DS Circle Pad

Awesome. I do really like the circle pads but my thumb kept slipping during kid icarus. I wonder if they will use this design on the Wii U (along with being clickable) and the 3DS redesign which i predict will be announced near the 2nd year anniversary of the console

Nintendo patent shows slight redesign of 3DS Circle Pad

Postby Barto » 15 May 2012 13:14

Awesome! The slipping is honestly my only issue with the circle pad.

They'll probably save this for the (now more than ever) inevitable redesign. Hopefully we'll this on the Wii U as well.

Good. It's a start. Now to move those lonely buttons down and slap a Circle Pad on that thing and let the money printing resume.

I honestly never got my thumb slipping with the Circle Pad… but I guess this will cover whoever has a problem with it.

Honestly, given how compact the 3DS is, looking at the diagram, that'd cause even more problem for screen scratching and imprint marks without a proper redesign.

They're missing the second Circle Pad in the patent.

Nintendo patent shows slight redesign of 3DS Circle Pad

Price permitting, I would almost definitely buy a redesigned 3DS if it fixed the constant marking of the top screen and had a nicer circle pad.

Nintendo patent shows slight redesign of 3DS Circle Pad

They need to use another material for the washer/insulator that gets stuck and messes up the movement of the circle pad. It should be a sturdy plastic and not a flimsy fabric that gets caught in the inner machinery. I had to open up my sister's 3DS and take it off, but now I wonder how long it will last.

I like the circle pad, I personally think it controls a lot better then an analog stick.

YES YES YES YES YEEEEES

This would be far more than enough to get me to purchase a 3DS redesign day 1. (Second pad and shoulder buttons included, of course)

I don't believe this is a redesign in the slightest.

I think it's simply the patent for the current design but with images that aren't exactly like the final product we saw.

I think that this patent could be an indication of Nintendo thinking about doing a redesign of the Nintendo 3DS or this patent could be an indication that Nintendo might use the redesigned Circle Pads shown in this patent for the Wii U controller.

I assume that if Nintendo is thinking about doing a redesign of the Nintendo 3DS, they will probably announce the redesign of the Nintendo 3DS next year.

You do realize that people are already angry at Nintendo for not putting a second Circle Pad on the Nintendo 3DS since there should be two Circle Pads on the Nintendo 3DS, right?

Looks a little retro like the N64 joystick (at least from the top part). I just hope it doesn't mark up your skin after some hard use. Although... maybe I should press so hard. Haha ^0^ Always loved the Circle Pad. Best joystick Nintendo has made!

Ridges or little nubs will work great. I like it how it is but I do sometimes get the slippage.
