People were asked what games machines they owned. 64.7% of the sample, or 701 people, had at least one, and from that group 61.6% had a Nintendo DS of one form or other (bog standard, lite, i, LL, 3DS, etc), 50.5% had a PlayStation 2, 50.1% a Wii, 32.4% a PlayStation Portable, 28.1% a PS3, and so on down the ranks. However, for the PlayStation Vita, released in December last year and having sold 1.2 million units worldwide, just 2.6% of these 701, or 18 people, 1.7% of the original sample owned one, up just 0.2 percentage points since the previous survey three months ago.

Q3: Do you think you would want to buy a Wii U, due out some time this year? (Sample size=1,083)

Want to buy 7.1%
Don’t want to buy, but interested in it 33.5%
Don’t want to buy at all 59.4%

The not interested group has increased 6.9 percentage points since the previous survey.

How in the hell do you lose interest in something when you don't even have all the details? I guess I'm just more open-minded than most, and I'm thinking you guys are as well!

Again, there isn't anything announced for it yet. Do the survey AFTER e3 and TGS this year. It should be different.

Maybe Japan works backwards: The less they're interested in a game console, the more of them buy it.

I think that's the most logical conclusion.

Ha :P

But that said... I mean... there's not alot to get excited about with the Wii U from what they've shown so far. I mean the tech looks cool, there are cool gameplay possibilities. But like... as a next gen system, I dunno how it's going to stand up.

I don't lose interest, there was none in the first place.

It will maybe appear once they actually announce something.

To be honest, other than Pikmin 3 there's nothing I'm hyped for. I'm glad Nintendo's getting 3rd party support like Assasin's Creed, but I want to see some 3rd and 1st party exclusives and exclusive content that will blow me out of the water, just like it did with the 3DS when it was launched with a deluge of trailers for awesome looking games and a WALL of devs that are pledged to producing games for the system. When I see that and only when I see that will I be hyped for the Wii-U.

Survey shows Japanese consumers losing interest in Wii U

Postby AlexPuma » 16 May 2012 17:23

I have the odd feeling I'd be no more excited for the WiiU after its reveal than I am right now. Unless they have an amazing showing and don't focus on the controller too much, that is.

If New Super Mario Bros. Mii gets more presentation time than, say, Pikmin 3, or a new IP or a revival of an older one (Startropics, F-Zero, something!)... then I'm out of here.

See ya!

@Errant_Chevalier
Well, it IS rather hard for you to be hyped over games you don't even know about, wouldn't you say? That's why it's called "reserving judgement until more info is available". All will be revealed at E3, which isn't that far away.

@nobody in particular

Why would they hold a survey over something that people know so little about? Man.....some websites/magazines/people have lots of time on their hands.

We won't know the 'full' picture about the Wii U until, E3 2012, anyway.

Until then, surveys like this, even if it was honest or not, are irrelavant to me, at this point.

Survey shows Japanese consumers losing interest in Wii U

Postby Lausebub » 16 May 2012 19:58

Maybe because Nintendo ISN'T talking about anything? The consumer looses interest in a product, when he doesn't here anything about it for awhile. Most people got the infos about Wii U through newspapers, big national news websites or television. I'm sure it's going to rise again (the interest) after E3 and especially closer to launch, when all the marketing (TV ads) starts.

Survey shows Japanese consumers losing interest in Wii U

Postby metalpants » 16 May 2012 22:33

Meh, I'm not too worried. For starters:

1) 3DS is doing great in Japan, which Nintendo can use to their advantage with some sort of connectivity to Wii U and what have you.

2) Sony would be Nintendo's greatest threat there and they're financially struggling at the moment. Plus they say they won't go the PS3 route with PS4 so that doesn't give hardcore gamers over there much incentive over Wii U. 3rd party support might though.

3) Microsoft..... well... nobody cares for Xbox over there so...

... that leaves Japanese gamers with not much of a choice as far as consoles go so Nintendo should be in the clear... for now at least. Plus they have the power of Dragon Quest X and Monster Hunter 4 on their side so hmm........

They probably surveyed a bunch of Sony fanboys and called it a day cause last time I checked even Sony developers have Wiis in their studios XD!

It's amazing how ppl don't have interest just because they haven't seen anything or listen to rumored specs. I suggest looking at a youtube video where a tech actually explains the Wii U's hardware. Puts all rumors to shame

Survey shows Japanese consumers losing interest in Wii U

Postby brancaleone » 17 May 2012 04:46

hahah no you don't need to be openminded in order not to lose interest. only a hardcore fanboi! (hey i am interested too!)

however, people these days own an ipad. (i do too) and an ipad offers an amazing gaming experience to all those who cared about wii. cheaper games, ability to play on your tv, near perfect browsing, fully portable.. the new ipad even offers super high definition, and ability for ultra high quality graphics. oh and TONS of casual games. also needs no controlls! (remember? the vast majority of consumers DO NOT like buttons and controls)

and many of them own an iphone too! which like ipad can go on tv, and be super portable too. both with higher quality visuals (for those who care) and a crpload of free apps!

so for those people who don't really care about nintendo or mario or link or luigi and so on and so forth( and they are a lot more than us, infinitely more i'd say) wiiU is something that came late, a bit more complex than wii, and it does just a couple of things more than what their current consoles do.

why should they care?

oh and an ipad with a data connection can cost about 160-200€ beat that!

Its easy to lose intreast in what you haven't seen. Why do you think rim who has been hyping up BB10 has had little repsone to what they've shown. I mean in apirl a survey had more than 80% of the people excited for the samsung gala y S 3 though nothing was known about it until may.

This does nothing but shows how healthy your brand is.

Not too hard to see why like others have said. It also doesn't help that Japan is becoming more of a handheld place.
