Bland vs. Unlikable characters

Tired of talking about video games? In here you can talk up ANYTHING else going on in the world or beyond...

Bland vs. Unlikable characters

Postby TheLastBlade » 17 May 2012 11:54

Which do you think is worse?

Personally, I think unlikable is beyond terrible. Why? Because, really? It can go on the borders of emo and unreasonable. Sure there are cliche and lame characters, but GOD unlikable is the theory of which there is nothing to like about them.

Ex. Persona 3.... That game pissed me off...
Bang.

Eh, sometimes being "unlikable" is part of a character's charm, you know? I'd much rather have a character that shows some kind of emotion, even if they're downright twisted or hateful most of the time, than a flimsy cardboard cut-out.

I get what your saying, but if the character has charm then they aren't unlikable. They may be dark and loathsome, but if you love to hate them then they are ultimately enjoyable characters.

Bland cause they offer nothing to my experience.

I'm going to say Bland characters are worse. At least with unlikable characters I feel energized and not in a 'meh' melancholy mood like with bland characters.

Depends on your definition of bland.

For instance, I see a lot of "Bland" accusations thrown at nearly any silent protagonist. To me, Silent protagnists are the best characters of all, because their personality is yours to create, and you live the adventure through them. Or if by bland, you mean someone like Zelda, who is just kind of... There, in every game until the Wind Waker, then yeah, It really depends.

I don't know what your definition of unlikable is either... A villain? A jerk? Or just a commonly disliked character like Tingle? In either case, It really depends on the character. And I hate to say it, but their design plays into it too.
I love Ganon, the big blue pig from a Link to the Past, despite having no personality other than the generic evil. I don't like Chaos, from Final Fantasy 1, despite being pretty much the same thing, but his design is far less appealing to me.

I'm torn.

Well guys the way I see it:

Bland: Games like the Tales series have one goal: Save the world. They never elaborated on racist junk and only show real individual emotion in skits. Extremely cliche. Pretty much almost on the same level of hatred next to unlikable.

Unlikable: .... The reason I hate them to an extreme is due to the fact that I actually am FORCED to play as them. What's that? Bland characters offer NOTHING to my experience? Merry Christmas! You get to spend 100 hours with these ***holes! And FYI, they add nothing to the experience by being a jerk, emo, and other things to get in your way (party and sometimes villains too). Good luck advancing to the next story without Snow being annoying, Hope being emo, and Lightning being a *****! And F your charm excuse... Unless we're giving a specific good enough excuse (unless if it's the bad guy) to actually enjoy having them around. Final Fantasy 13 anyone?

God, I just stated my reasons... Now to take a nap.
Bang.

See you, Space Cowboy...
