I can't really feel bad for this guy getting fired, and I don't believe for a second he had no idea that this was something he wasn't supposed to be doing. He knew what he was doing, and now he's facing the consequences. When you do things at work you know your not supposed to (and this is a pretty big thing) you get fired. This could have a negative effect for the whole company if Nintendo doesn't trust them to work on their systems before launch.

People are asking why he would be sued (this is a rumour so don't assumed that he is).

Reason: To prevent others from doing something like this. Sacking someone is just something the company that employs him can do, Nintendo may feel it itself need to do something more drastic to make sure others don't do the same in the future.

Suffice to say, its best not to be stupid. If you're going to leak something make sure it cannot in any way be traced back to you.

An NDA is serious business. Breaking one is a bad idea, but doing it on your Twitter account is just throwing your career in the garbage. They have to treat this guy harshly, to ensure the next guy thinks twice before posting a pic of himself playing the next Zelda or Mario prototype on his Facebook.

They spend millions planning the marketing and the building up to E3 and all, and stuff like this throws a wrench in their plans. You may think a lawsuit is too much, but several years of the fellow's salaries is probably nowhere near the extent of damages it could possibly have done from a marketing perspective. Besides, no one's going to stop doing this kind of thing if there aren't real repercussions involved. This WILL make others think twice about pulling a similar stunt, and that's what's intended.

It is just a controller though. It isn't like he spoiled some really secret information. We've seen the Pad before and we've seen the patent of the controller that is the exact same thing as what was posted.

NDA: Non-Disclosure Agreement
It's a contract a patron, parent company or the company hiring the developers make with them (the developers) that specifically says that they can't say anything about the product/project they are working on. In this case, the guy signed some paper that forbade him from ever showing the controller to anybody outside the company, and he did it anyway.
